Selected conversion data from the main BHSAT site

Postby Excelsior (smack) » Mon Mar 26, 2012 8:44 pm

I have taken the liberty of computing question-by-question conversion data for the first 11 rounds of BHSAT played at the Yale site (i.e. all the rounds except the finals). Below, you will find selected points of interest that I hope will provoke discussion.

Please keep in mind that these data cover only 21 teams. This is a very small sample. Draw your conclusions in accordance with the small sample size. Note that there are going to be minor abnormalities in all data for rounds 9-10 because of some issues involving teams playing matches in the wrong bracket, and teams leaving, and so forth. Note also that this data is only as reliable as our scorekeepers.

Keep in mind that bonus conversion taken as an aggregate will be inflated because good teams will get the opportunity to hear more bonuses (by virtue of having fewer tossups go dead).

Re: Selected conversion data from the main BHSAT site

In case people got all confused playing the set as to why they didn't hear a given answer line listed above, it's because some changes were made based on the conversion data from the main site. The tossups "electric field", "heat capacity", "precession," and "particle accelerators" were changed to easier answers (voltage, specific heat, inertia, and Large Hadron Collider, I believe) after the main site. The Henri Rousseau bonus got an easy part on Paul Gauguin, the deuterocanonical bonus got an easy part on the four Gospels, the multivariable calculus bonus was toned down, the part on "energy and time" got changed to just "energy," and a few tossups had some internal changes made to them to increase accessibility.

ED. Further changes were made for mirrors after 4/14: "post-order traversal" became "traversal," "Gorky" became a lit tossup on the "Soviet Union"
