Bull Bowl 12 in Buffalo - 11/17/12

Postby Tale of Mac Datho's Pachycephalosaur » Tue Jun 19, 2012 11:08 am

The University at Buffalo Academic Bowl team will be hosting its second annual high school fall tournament, Bull Bowl 12, on Saturday, November 17, 2012. We will be using NAQT IS-118 (as of Aug 2012).

Location:
We'll be on UB's North Campus in Amherst, NY, likely with a distribution of rooms along the academic spine.

Field:
We are pleased to expand the field to 24 teams for 2012. Initially, each school will be limited to 2 teams. On Saturday, Nov 10, if the field has not been filled, schools will be permitted to register a third team.

Fees (tentative):
Base Fee: $65 for first team, $55 for each additional team
Buzzer Discount: -$5 per fully-functional system
Experienced Reader Discount: -$10
Staff Discount: -$5
Distance Discount: -$5/150 miles, one way, by Google Maps
International Discount: -$5

Staffers and readers can be anyone, but they will be bound to a room and therefore will be unable to follow their team around. If a team wishes to bring two coaches who switch off reading or scorekeeping duties, this will be permitted, providing that it does not interfere with the tournament running smoothly.

Interest should be directed to UBAB President Zach Pace (zpace21 [AT] gmail [DOT] com).

Field update (11/16):
Clarence (1)
Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School (2)
Niagara Catholic (1)

I am planning on coming and staffing this and can bring as many buzzers as you will need. Also, Nolwenn and I are planning on spending Nov. 12-20 doing outreach in Upstate NY and working Masterminds meets every day in that timeframe. For the week of 11/12-16, we can also talk up Bull Bowl, though if you haven't yet done so, you should get in touch with Scott Kroner who runs Masterminds, to put the word out about this. Hopefully you can get 20+ teams.

I'd definitely appreciate your help, if you were in the area. Buzzers are going to be a large-ish obstacle in this region, but I'm hoping to cajole some schools into getting them in the next couple years. I'd certainly be happy to give you a couple of minutes of face time at the beginning or end of the day to plug NHBB.

I am in fairly regular contact with Scott, so I'll mention it to him specifically in my next communique, although I think he does know about it already. I'm hoping to expand to 24 teams this year, which is possible with some regional outreach.

Zach:

Assuming I don't have any issues come up between now and then, I'm planning to be there as well if you need a moderator. I'm in Ithaca and I have family in the Buffalo area (actually Lockport), so maybe we'll make it a family trip with my wife and kids going to visit relatives while I work the tournament. I'll also attempt to recruit some central New York, Southern Tier, and possibly Northern Tier of PA teams to attend the tournament - Ithaca, Horseheads, Montrose (PA), Mountain View (PA) and maybe Whitney Point would likely be interested, but I'll find out for sure after speaking to the coaches when the new school year starts. My e-mail is scottblish (at) g mail.com if you'd like to send more specific info along as it becomes available.

I'd love to have you come up, and it's great to hear of more interest in Upstate NY! I should have more details (confirmation of location and packet set, plus other miscellany) in about a month, so I'll let you know. When that happens, I'll also send a flyer.

Any field update for this, or other communication, since I'm now in Buffalo and have 4 working buzzers to bring to this, but haven't otherwise heard anything. Details?

Stats are at http://www.hsquizbowl.org/db/tournament ... ull_stats/.

After many teams not showing up and cancelling at the last minute, we ran with a last-minute schedule change. Thanks to Paul Nelson, Scott Blish, and David Madden for their help, advice, and patience.

Thanks also go to Buffalo staffers, and to Mr Eric Robineau from Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School for humoring me and my last-minute changes.
