KABO: Kurtis and Ashvin's Backyard Open (8/4)

Post by kdroge »

This is the announcement for KABO: Kurtis and Ashvin's Backyard Open. The tournament will be held on 8/4. Right now, since we should be able to get rooms in Ann Arbor, that will be the prospective site of the main event. If we cannot find room there, then the next most likely option would be to hold this at the University of Illinois. I would like to have a mirror on the east coast, and I'd welcome mirrors in other locations as well if there is demand.

There will be ten rounds of tossups and bonuses. I am writing the majority of the non-science; Ashvin is writing a little bit of non-science and all of the science. Tossups will be around 7 lines in TNR 10, with the vast majority between 6 and 8 lines. The difficulty will be about that of VCUO- A bit of experimentation in tossup answer lines, plenty of hard clues in tossups, a decent number of easier tossup answer lines, reasonable easy parts of bonuses, middle parts of bonuses that aren't impossible. I am shooting for something that better players can find sufficiently challenging without leaving people with a decent grasp of the regular difficulty canon completely lost, with an emphasis on creativity. Tossups will be power marked. The distribution is slightly altered from normal, mainly to give us a little more room to explore the "other" categories in FA and science:

4/4 Lit (1/1 American, 1/1 Euro, 1/1 British, 1/1 World)
4/4 History (1/1 american, 1/1 Euro pre-1500, 1/1 Euro post-1500, 1/1 World)
4/4 Science (1/1 biology, 1/1 physics, ~.7/.7 chemistry, ~1.3/1.3 other science)
3/3 RMP (1/1 myth, 1/1 religion, 1/1 philosophy)
3/3 FA (1/1 painting, ~.7/.7 classical music, ~1.3/1.3 other FA, with a slant towards visual over auditory)
2/2 Social Science (all the usual suspects included)
1/1 Aca Other (An exploration of studied subjects that don't show up too much, such as cultures, public policy, law, engineering, business, etc.)

Each packet will have 21/21, with the "extra" tossup and bonus chosen randomly. There is no trash (I'm sure that fans of trash will have plenty of events to play this weekend to fulfill the trash quota).

The fee to this tournament will be 80 dollars per team (last year's VCUO was 120, and this is a little more than 2/3 the number of rounds). There will be a 5 dollar buzzer discount. If there end up being teams that aren't full, I can discount the entry fee accordingly. The mirror fee will be around 40 dollars per team.

The post immediately following this will be reserved for the field (at the main site) and staffers. I'm assuming we'll be in need of staff- I can offer some sort of discount to other events during the weekend and/or pay for lunch for staffers. If people have any questions, post here or email me at [email protected].

Edit: The RMP, History, FA, and Aca Other are done, so this is a little over halfway done. I'll update completion numbers every couple weeks to track progress.

Looking for teammates.

I also plan on appending my film tournament to this tournament on either that Saturday or the following day depending on schedule. I will include a link to that other thread with details/field registration once I finish it (which should be next week).

Assuming the East Coast mirror is going to be at UMD, or some other site easily accessible from DC, I'm definitely up for this, and looking for teammates.

I'll definitely play this, though if the Midwest site is at UIUC, I might play at the east coast mirror since it will likely be closer.

Assuming this is in Ann Arbor, I will play whatever Sunday events there are. If the main event continues until Sunday, I can also staff that.

I'd like to play this at Ann Arbor if anyone wants to adopt me to their team. I know some stuff with no coherent pattern to it (unless the 1/1 Aca Other works out to include lots of mass media and communication theory).

Also here is a Google Spreadsheet for teams. Make sure you sign up under the right site.

Considering I'll have nothing to do around this time of the year, I'll come with a DCC contingent. If that doesn't work, I'd be willing to play with somebody else (I know history, especially ancient) or staff

So I heard there was an objection to a Missouri mirror on proximity-to-main-site grounds. I would like to note that, if we were to randomly pick the site as Columbia, MO, that would mean Ann Arbor would be an hour closer to the Maryland site, and 5 hours closer to the Waterloo site.

I doubt a Missouri mirror would suck that many teams away--probably one or so, unless the Minnesota contingents would go there over Ann Arbor (which I would probably find unlikely).

I'm not sure exactly where you got this impression from, but I would be okay with a mirror of this in Missouri- I don't think it would detract from the main site field too much, if at all, to be honest. The fact that I haven't gotten paid for MOO because we've been waiting for Missouri to pay since October does make me think twice about wanting to let you guys mirror KABO, though.

Is there any update on facilities (I'm ASSuming it's in Ann Arbor, probably at the U of M, but would like to be 100% sure)? Tulane says they should probably get at least a smallish Bayou a Drank trash tournament going if Sunday rooms could be obtained.

Edit: Sunday rooms will also probably be needed if we want to play all of the side events (film/tech/myth), although perhaps not.

The requests have been put in, but I've not received information about whether they were processed yet. This is probably because our adviser who gets these emails doesn't check her email that often. Sorry I can't provide much more information.

It's less than a month until this tournament. While not knowing particular rooms or if there will be Sunday events is fine, can we at least get some definite assurance that this will be in Ann Arbor as opposed to Urbana-Champaign?

Well, we apparently don't find out about rooms until a few weeks before our reservation date, but I can't imagine there'd be any problems with finding a room somewhere in the university. If we don't, the Synagogue is a pricey backup option, so this is going to be in Ann Arbor area for sure.

This is (probably) going to be taking place in Mason Hall where all of our tournaments have been held in the last few years. People should probably park here and then walk over to Mason Hall (south of North University and east of State St.). Street parking is free on Sundays. If you have any questions regarding transportation to or around the university, shoot me an email.

I think the list of side events currently stands at:

-ANFORTAS (Ike myth)
-Will tech
-me film

-maybe: 2nd edition of Eliza/Melanie's bad trash
-maybe: YMIR
-maybe: Bayou a Drank

(If anyone has anything else to offer, have at it)

If we only get one day for rooms, we could still probably squeeze the three main side events into one day (there's only ten packets in the main event). If we get two days, I would, if there's interest, like to run the full Bayou a Drank trash tournament and perhaps move one side event to that day depending on time.

I was just going to ask if there was any sort of plan/schedule for the side events. Personally, my preferences are film, both trash events, and I'm on the fence about tech. I suppose I'd be willing to staff anything I'm not playing, if people are willing to listen to me absolutely butcher mythological names that I should have learned by now. The logistics/times are not particularly important to me as I'm in the area both days, but I imagine others with travel plans would like something more concrete.

I'd like to play ANFORTAS and film (and I guess YMIR, assuming enough people are interested in/still have not seen that, though we could always just read it in the car or something), though I'd be more than happy to play the tech tournament and whatever trash is available too.

I think the problem is the Michigan people are unclear if they can get Sunday rooms. If they can't, then we'll have to backload the Saturday schedule as much as possible (although it's a 10-round main event, so there will be a lot of time for side events I would bet if we avoid poodle doo-ing). If they can, we have a little more flexibility.

I would guess even if we only have Saturday rooms, we can get film/tech/myth in, particularly if at least one of them turns into shootout.

I didn't think that I would be able to go to this, but it turns out that I can. If the Minnesota contingent has room and I can find a team, I'd like to go.

How late are we going on Saturday? (and when do you estimate the main event itself will be finished?)

I'm not exactly sure on how late we'll run on Saturday depending on side events, but the main event should finish during the afternoon at a very reasonable time because it is only ten rounds.
