Such arrogant provincialism, roping Connecticut in with New York and New Jersey! I'm certain some New England partisans have a bone to pick with that.

At any rate: At this point, Yale tentatively plans to host its Fall Academic Tournament (FAcT) on Saturday, October 12, 2013, on an NAQT A-set, and the 23rd annual Bulldog High School Academic Tournament (BHSAT) on Saturday, March 1, 2014 (EDIT: BHSAT may be moved to an earlier date, possibly February 15 or February 1, and we will let the community know if such a move occurs).

HSAPQ is tentatively claiming March 1 and April 5 March 29 for the Regional and State components of the New York Quizbowl Championship. We have a tremendous amount of additional information to share about this tournament, but it's going to be a big thing. We're just waiting to make sure some important non-quizbowl events that may compete for attention are not scheduled on those days, at which point the dates will be confirmed and we'll post all the details.

Brother Nigel,

I do not know if you saw that Harvard has already claimed November 9th for its annual HFT, so I thought I would inform you in case you wanted to go to Harvard and not cross-schedule against it. We enjoy both tournaments ourselves and would hope to be able to attend both. But of course you must do what is best for Kellenberg.

October 26 is Bull Bowl 13 at the University at Buffalo.

Note: we do not have exclusivity for downstate, but if there's overwhelming interest, I may be able to arrange it.

EDIT: we've been assigned IS-128

Jon,

An FYI:

I do not know if you saw Brother Nigel's edited post above where he changed his date claim for LIFT from November 9th, 2013 to November 16th, 2013, so you might want to change it on the master calendar for the 2013-2014 Academic Year. BTW---thanks for doing this!

NHBB Southern New Jersey at Mon Don is set for Sat. Oct 26. Northern NJ at Ridgewood will hopefully be on 11/23 - if not, 10/26 is also possible. We will be adding a NYC tournament (meant primarily for new teams) and a 4th NJ tournament this year, meaning that states will run in January likely at Seton Hall Univ., while the Princeton Univ. tournament will be rechristened the mid-Atlantic championships. Both fall NJ events will be on C set, as will the NYC tournament. Westchester will also run on C set, while CT and Long Island, along with NJ states will be on B set. Princeton will be the sole area A set event. Additional info to come soon.

I"d like to tentatively claim November 9, 2013 for the BrainBusters Fall tournament at Ithaca HS. While we are expecting a larger and more regional field than last year's edition, which was housewritten and strictly local in scope, we also do not anticipate any field clash with Harvard Fall. This tournament will almost certainly be run on a NAQT IS set, although exclusivity problems in upstate NY could cause us to switch to an HSAPQ set.

Hey, it looks like between last year's tournaments and this year's new claims (including Bergen's hope to host an HSAPQ event likely in April or May), there could be a tournament almost every week. I understand the arms race: everyone is holding a tournament, so you have to go to 15 tournaments, and the only way to afford that is to host your own tournament, but I do want to make one plea and that is to take your date claim seriously. We have a nice enough circuit here that if you announce a tournament for March X, assuming you haven't stepped on someone's traditional date, it's yours. But that means if come February, you realize you've done no planning and can't host a tournament, now it's nearly impossible for someone else to hold on that date, and you've basically stolen a weekend that someone could've used to hold an actual tournament.

On a different note, NHBB continues to expand its grasp and I'm a little frustrated that they are now laying claim to EIGHT tournaments within NY/NJ/CT. It's my opinion (not related to that of any organization I am a member of, including but not limited to PACE and the HSQB forum staff) that at this point, no NHBB tournament can be considered to exclude other standard-academic tournaments in the region on the same date, simply because of the very finite resource that is Saturday within the school year. Even so, having so many NHBB events is still an impediment to standard academic events, because they naturally take away a part of the field for those events. I understand it's a business and it's got to make money, but it's just a little frustrating.

For the sake of completeness, I will list any Jeopardy!-style tournaments I am aware of in the area because, while they are not acceptable quiz bowl, they may serve to steal part of the field from a legitimate quiz bowl tournament planned for the same date. It is my personal opinion that no one on the boards should consider attending any Jeopardy!-style tournament.

Some NHBB date updates here:
Westchester - 10/26 confirmed at White Plains on C Set
New Jersey States on B Set - is confirmed that it will be at Seton Hall University; presuming Princeton hosts our Northeast regional on A Set on 2/22, then we'll go with 1/18 for NJ States.
Connecticut will be at Newtown on B Set - I believe on 3/8, though I need to double check that.
Also, Hunter has expressed interest in hosting a NYC regional on C set in December. Since GSAC is (Edit) 12/14, we'll go with 12/8 for that. And yes, that's a Sunday date on purpose - the SAT is that Saturday, so that's good to avoid, but moreover, that will allow us to do outreach to all the Jewish schools in the area who don't come to Saturday tournaments because they don't do any activities on Saturdays.

Within the area, that leaves Ridgewood, which I should have the date for this week, and Long Island - I need to check with Alan Blayne to see if HHH West can host again, and we may do a second tournament on the island as well. Oh, and Jon, the Jeopardy tournaments are a bit hard to read. Could you make them an even paler shade of yellow, so they're a bit harder still?

Sorry, not following the boards as closely as normal during the summer, so I just saw this, but would like to respond to it. First, we're still just running three sets, so that hasn't changed (nor will it for the forseeable future). In terms of NHBB vis a vis all-subject events, the issue is largely one of teams' willingness to travel, which as we all know in the NYC area is not what it is in most of the country. Generally speaking, Westchester and Long Island teams do not travel much, but are willing to go to nearby events. The same is likely to be true for CT, which has a number of NHBB schools that as of now aren't too active elsewhere in quizbowl. And also for NYC itself. Bernard from TriBeCa told me last year that far more students from TriBeCa would be willing to go to an event in NYC than in the distant far off reaches of Long Island or the NJ suburbs, and we are going to do a major push to bring in a bunch of new schools from NYC itself this year, which punches below its weight within the Tri-State Area. Since we'll be doing the NYC tournament on a Sunday, that will also allow us to reach out to the 50-70 Jewish schools in the area who don't play Saturday events for obvious reasons.
Looking at NJ, it makes sense for us to split up South and North Jersey, since we want South Jersey to be able to grow a bit before encountering the North Jersey powerhouses at states or NE Regionals. We may also look to do a second Long Island tournament too, since we have a number of Long Island schools that are happy to play (we had about 25 teams there last year, but very few of those played on another set) but only on Long Island.
Anyway, beyond all this, we're happy to promote everyone else's tournaments at our events, talk up quizbowl in all legit forms among the teams that play NHBB but haven't crossed over as much yet, and in general, be supportive. If someone schedules a NJ tournament the day of our CT tournament or our second Long Island or whatever, that won't be a huge deal, and is certainly more beneficial to quizbowl as a whole than us not running a tournament for which there is demand.

11/23 is now official for NHBB Northern NJ on C Set at Ridgewood. We're expecting about 70-90 teams this year for this, and I will spend at least a week in October specifically recruiting for this tournament.

Hunter will be mirroring SCOP for our annual fall novice tournament on October 12. We will be hosting Prison Bowl on March 22.

EDIT: Our novice tournament will be running on SCOP.

FAcT room reservations are confirmed for October 12 as well. We'll be using an NAQT A-set. We should be okay even given the date conflict with Hunter's novice event, due to increased interest among New England teams, but we also welcome non-novice teams from the NY/NJ area if they want to come.

Princeton will be tentatively hosting its annual PHSAT on September 28, 2013. We will be using IS-128.

With NAQT's release of their 2013-14 tournament calendar, I have updated the original post with some new tournaments as well as set assignments. Bloomfield has tacked an additional tournament onto the already crowded March 1 date.

Change NHBB NJ @ Ridgewood to Dec. 7 - we were told by the school scheduler a week ago that 11/23 no longer works (have no idea why we were bumped). They confirmed today that 12/7 is okay, so we're on for that day. For now, the tournament at Hunter will still be the following day. We'll see if it makes sense to move it, but as the Hunter tournament is primarily to draw new NYC schools into the mix and the sets will be the same (i.e. C set) in any case, there's probably not a really convincing argument for moving it.

March 1 is too crowded; to avoid stepping on the toes of other events, Yale is going to move BHSAT earlier in the year. Pencil us in for the as-yet-unoccupied date of February 1, please.

Was any reason given for the date change of KPAQT from the fifth to the twelfth?

When the NAQT calendar went up, I think it said April 12. Looking now, it says April 5, so I'm moving it back.

NHBB's Mid-Atlantic Championships will be at Princeton University on Saturday, Feb. 22 (same weekend as last year).

NJ States on B set is indeed confirmed for Saturday 1/18 at Seton Hall University (not Seton Hall Prep!). Also, to be pedantic, we're calling our Princeton tournament on 2/22 the mid-Atlantic Championship (that's less confusing given that there's also a New England Championship, so "Northeast" is a bit problematic).

Jon,

You might want to place MIT's September 21st Fall Tournament on the NY/NJ/CT calendar---it will be using the well regarded JAMES Set and will likely be affiliated with PACE, so it might be very attractive to local teams.

Done. I've also started linking tournament names to threads in the Tournament Announcements forums.

Also, I'm not putting it on the list because I need to confirm it with my students, but I'm hoping for Bergen to host an event in the spring. Tentatively April 12, using PACE format so that teams can get some competitive practice at it before NSC.

Jon,

Alex Gross of the University of Delaware recently posted a request on the "DC Metro Date Claim" site for 2013-2014 to change the date of the Delaware Fall Open from October 19th to October 26th, so you might want to verify this and change it on our local calendar if it is accurate.

Delaware Fall will be October 26th and will use IS #128. (Please note that this is the same set used at Princeton in September.)

Jeff,

For some reason I had thought Delaware Fall would be using a house-written set, so thanks for the update about its use of IS128 and thus its conflict with Princeton's tournament in September.

Does anyone know what happened to Princeton's PHSAT September 28th announcement on the Regular Season forum? I went to look for a field update and it seems to have simply disappeared.

The person making the tournament announcement only has two posts, so whenever he edits the post, it has to be re-approved by a moderator.

It's back now. As a reminder, this is one reason why it's a good idea to have a separate post for your field update.

Mountain Lakes will be hosting the inaugural Mountain Lakes Invitational on January 4. We do not have which set we will use set in stone yet, full announcement to come in the coming months.

Mountain Lakes will be using NAQT'S 131A, so if you are one of the 10 schools currently on the waitlist for FAcT, you'll have another (possibly closer!) chance to play this set this season.

For those that have no idea where Mountain Lakes is in NJ (I was asked this by multiple local teams last season), Mountain Lakes is just northwest of the intersection of interstates 80 and 287 right next to Parsippany, about 30 miles from NYC.
