Announcement: DRAGOON (11/16/13)
Announcement: DRAGOON (11/16/13)
The University of Illinois would like to announce DRAGOON (Dr. Aaron's Grand Overview Of Nonsense), a regular difficulty tournament planned for fall 2013. We would like to run mirrors during the month of November (except for the weekend ACF Fall claims).
Questions:
This tournament will be house-written by the following members of the University of Illinois: Aaron Rosenberg, Billy Busse, Austin Listerud, Andrew Wang, Chinmay Kansara, and Kevin Davis, with some assistance from Ike Jose.
This is a regular difficulty non-open tournament. (Examples of good past tournaments we would classify as "regular difficulty" include MAGNI and ACF Regionals 2010). You must be a current university or high school student to play this tournament.
Questions will be hard-capped at 7 lines of 10-pt Times New Roman before the powermark (there will be powers). There will be 15 packets with the following question distribution:
4/4 Literature
4/4 History
4/4 Science
3/3 RMP (Religion, Mythology, Philosophy)
3/3 Fine Arts (Painting, Music, Other)
1/1 Social Science
1/0 Trash
0/1 Geography/Current Events
Each packet will also contain a tiebreaker tossup, and there will be an extra document consisting of tiebreakers (tossups and bonuses)
Hosting:
We are looking for mirrors anywhere there is quizbowl. The mirror fee will be $35.
Regions:
Midwest: UIUC (11/16/13)
Northeast: Yale (11/16/13)
Mid-Atlantic: Virginia Tech (11/17/13)
Upper Midwest:
Great Plains: Kansas State (11/9/13)
South: Alabama (11/16/13)
West Coast:
Florida:
Texas: Texas A&M (11/16/13)
Canada: Buffalo (11/16/13)
UK:
UW + Skype (11/16/13)

Any interest in Mid-Atlantic mirrors for this? Since VCU and UVA have tournaments for the Fall, maybe Maryland?

I've updated the opening post with all the confirmed mirrors so far. Anyone else interested in mirroring should contact me. (Austin or I will probably get into contact with possible hosts soon)

Sorry America, you can't get rid of Buffalo that easily! Maybe if you throw in Detroit (I've heard it's financially attractive...)touchpack wrote: Canada: Buffalo (11/16/13).

Re: Announcement: DRAGOON (11/16/13)
Is there going to be a sign-up list for the Illinois site posted in this thread, or will it be split off into its own announcement? (Disclaimer: The following is an unofficial statement made by me, not the UofL quizbowl team) Louisville is planning to register a minimum of one team for that tournament.

Re: Announcement: DRAGOON (11/16/13)
That simply means "before the powermark is added" (and thus before the bolding increases the question length).

Re: Announcement: DRAGOON (11/16/13)
No, it isn't. Due to the variable length of powermarks, a question with a longer power will thus be constrained to a shorter length cap if we capped question length after powermarking, since bolded text is larger than not bolded text. Doing it this way ensures a consistent length cap.fett0001 wrote:Emphasis added.touchpack wrote:Questions will be hard-capped at 7 lines of 10-pt Times New Roman before the powermark (there will be powers).

Ok, I read that the other way, as in, power = 7 lines.

I've Emailed Billy but haven't heard back. Since the set isn't clear, may we use it for NASAT tryouts we're hosting next week?
