NAQT Canada SCT-February 8, 2014

Post by minusfive »

The University of Ottawa Trivia Club is pleased to announce it will host Canada's NAQT Sectional, to be held February 8, 2014. We would love to see you at our tournament, and there's many great reasons to attend! Details follow:

What: The NAQT Canada Sectional Tournament 2014
When: February 8, 2014, 9 a.m. (SHARP)
Where: University of Ottawa Main Campus (Faculty of Social Sciences Building), Ottawa, Ontario, Canada (NOT the one in Kansas)
Sections: As per NAQT Regulations, there will be 3 Sections (Division I, Division I-Undergraduate, and Division II). Moderator Discount: $-30 per moderator (maximum 1 per team; must be able to moderate as per NAQT rules and must be able to complete, at the host's sole discretion of determining, an average of 20 toss-ups coherently per timed round)
Scorekeeper Discount: -$10 per scorekeeper (maximum of 1 per team; moderators are expected to be able to keep score, but will not receive an additional scorekeeper discount if they do so)
Clock Discount: $-5 per Clock (Maximum 3 per school; as per NAQT requirements, "clocks must be at least as easy to read as NAQT's Cole-Parmer timers; team must provide battery or power cord")
New School (Teams from schools that neither competed in nor hosted a NAQT Sectional in the last two years): -$30 per team
Distance Discount: -$10 (per team) for teams traveling over 200 kilometres to play, as determined by Google Maps shortest route (one discount only)

Needless to say, Waterloo will be gracing your pathetic tournament.

Important things like number of teams, Div I / Div II, whether we will be sticking around for the Pizza Lunch, etc., will be decided in the months to come.

Like earlier years (2005 & 2011), the SCT will be held the same time as Ottawa's Winterlude festival. This is great if you enjoy doing touristy things like skating on the Rideau Canal or eating BeaverTails, but it can be an annoyance if you just want to get to and from campus.

If you are hoping to use a good downtown hotel, book early. In the morning, be alert for people (illegally) filling the campus lots for Winterlude parking. After the tournament, avoid driving on the canal parkways, Elgin Street, and Laurier.

As Ben points out, it's never too early to plan to come to Ottawa (especially for this!). In that vein, we can direct people looking to stay in Ottawa to the following hotels (we don't have any hotel deals-yet-and depending on tournament size we likely won't, but stay tuned if none of these meet your budget), based on your preference:

1. Embassy Hotel and Suites:
http://www.embassyhotelottawa.com/
Located about 5-10 minutes (by walking) from the tournament site. Cheap and (I think?) probably safe. Beware your car getting towed by zealous City of Ottawa employees.

2. Holiday Inn Ottawa
http://www.hiottawa.ca/
Claims to be in the "Golden Triangle District" (I've never heard that area called that, and there are no giant catfish that I'm aware of). Again, only 5-10 minutes (walking) from the tournament site. You know you want to be able to say the line "frontin' chillin' at the 'holidae' inn."

3. Extended Stay Ottawa
http://www.extendedstaycanada.ca/hotels ... awa/ottawa
Not terrible. 5-10 minutes (walking distance) away, decent restaurant on first floor; decent (but unspectacular) rooms, and parking. I do not believe they MAKE you take an extended stay, but you might want to be careful...

4. Quality Inn (Downtown Ottawa)
http://www.qualityinn.com/hotel-ottawa-canada-CN286
My personal choice for trips to Ottawa, but pricier (if you tell them you're in town for a uOttawa thing, there used to be some sort of magic discount). Bar/restaurant on the ground floor (owned by Don Cherry), Liquor and Supermarket across the street (for our American friends, no, you can't just buy alcohol anywhere...Socialism!), extremely sketchy basement parking or roof parking, and a 5-10 minute (uphill) walk to the tournament site.

5. Best Western Gatineau
http://www.bestwesterngatineau.ca/
We had this date from the beginning. Yes, it's across the river in Hull (in Quebec, where one can *probably* find hospitality staff/pedestrians/emergency services that speak English), and yes, that is...Quebec, but hey, it might be cheaper (and it's only about 15 minutes drive from the tournament site).

6. Plus, there are a lot of motel-like arrangements around Vanier Parkway (keywords would be that-I believe it includes a Days INN) and for the brave, Ottawa does have a hostel/Traveler's Inn (http://www.ottawahostel.com/index.php and the Ottawa "Jail" Hostel http://www.hihostels.ca/Ontario/1166/HI ... ail.hostel) where the movie Hostel is unlikely to occur (no liability, I just said "unlikely").

In terms of arriving/departing Ottawa:
We are centrally connected to Southern Ontario by the Highway 416 (which meets up with the 401, the main Ontario-Quebec superhighway) and we have a highway in town, the 417 (the Queensway) which means you don't necessarily have to stay right in town. Like all highways, though, it can be dicey for a variety of reasons (congestion, construction, weather, Matrix Reloaded scenario, etc).

We also have an international airport (http://ottawa-airport.ca/) from where it is very easy to cab/bus downtown, and a pretty cool train station (http://www.viarail.ca/en/explore-our-de ... rio/ottawa) which, again, links up well with buses and cabs. The city bus system of Ottawa is "OC Transpo"-they take tickets, which can be purchased locally, or cash (I believe it's roughly $3 per adult ride). OC Transpo has pretty good routes, and a transit way (only for buses), and a pretty kick-ass travel planner (http://www.octranspo1.com/?from=splash).

If you have any questions (about parking, attractions, or anything else!) just shoot me an e-mail at [email protected]. Ideally (to help both us and you), early entries are encouraged.

I've stayed here a number of times and I can vouch for not having yet found myself in the middle of a horror film. (The staff are very nice, the beds can be slept in, it's a 10 minute walk to the university. Also, they have a perpetual book exchange in the common room, if you want to take home a souvenir or whatever.)

Regarding hotels: if you're coming from the 416, don't mind driving downtown for 15 minutes in the morning, and want to spend less than $100 per night, there are a few options in the western suburbs.

The suburb of Bells Corners (intersection of Robertson and Moodie) is near the 416/417 junction and has several small shops, restaurants, and hotels. There's a Days Inn and Holiday Inn, amongst others.

I haven't gone there (because I live in Ottawa), but the Travelodge at the Carling Avenue exit of the 417 may be a nice surprise for you. It's not in the greatest neighbourhood, but that helps lower the rates for a well-furnished hotel that has a water park complete with slides and a wave pool.

Hotels in Kanata or near the airport are probably too far out of your way to be worth it.

Places to Eat (Before and the Day of):

Before:
Downtown Ottawa (and the University of Ottawa) are located near both shops and restaurants (quick service and leisurely dining). It's not possible to enumerate them all, but a brief highlight follows:

1) Approximately 15 minutes walking from the University is "Byward Market," an area which features many restaurants (such as the Hard Rock Cafe, The Keg Steakhouse and Bar, Lone Star, etc.). It has sushi, Italian food, Indian food, 2 bars (1 Irish themed, 1 Scottish themed), and even a McDonald's at one end (there is also an all-you-can eat Buffet at the strip club "Bare Fax," but...). With some searching (and some time to kill), it should satisfy most tastes.
http://www.byward-market.com/

2) Approximately 10 minutes walk from campus is another major food location, Elgin street between Gloucester and Frank Street (known, during the hockey playoff season, as the "Sens Mile"). This area ranges from fast food (McDonald's, Wendy's, Harvey's, Quiznos) to pubs (The Fox and Feather, Maclaren's) to finer dining. Again, with some time to explore, this will satisfy most palates.
https://maps.google.ca/maps?f=d&hl=en&g ... 37594&z=15

3) Approximately 10 minutes' walk from the University, the Rideau Centre, Ottawa's downtown mall, offers a foodcourt and some independent restaurants. The usual mall foodcourt bears no further description. http://www.rideaucentre.com/en/Pages/default.aspx

4) If you're looking to cook your own food or stock up, Ottawa also has at least 3 supermarkets near the University. One is located at 363 Rideau Street (Loblaws, near Rideau and King Edward, just north of the University), one at 245 Rideau Street (Metro, again, near Rideau and King Edward), and finally (further Southwest), at Somerset and Bank Streets (about 20 minutes walk from the University). All offer ways to stock up on food for the tournament day (or pre-tournament munching).

5) Downtown Ottawa offers many more culinary opportunities. As a last comment, within 3 blocks of the campus there are, shockingly, 3 pubs (The Royal Oak at 161 Laurier Street, The Father and Sons at 112 Osgoode Street, and La Maison at 194 Somerset Ave. E), coffee places, and 2 Subway restaurant locations (1 at either side of campus; 50 Laurier Ave E, and near Laurier and Nelson streets, respectively). There's generally food around everywhere.

During:
There is food on campus http://foodservices.uottawa.ca/places-to-eat, represented by both a buffet restaurant (Jazzy), which features unlimited bacon, and an individual-purchase campus-style cafeteria which will be open on the day of the tournament. There will also be food available (in a one-size-fits-all style) for purchase from the organizers. Participants are strongly cautioned that the tournament will run on a tight schedule and the organizers will not hesitate to forfeit teams that tarry during lunch, so a "sit-down" restaurant is emphatically discouraged.

Ottawa is full of attractions for both the consistent and first-time visitors. As our nation's capital, Ottawa is proud to host several permanent museums/exhibitions, as well as seasonal activities. A list follows, but if there's something you particularly want to experience, or with any questions, please contact Jordan Palmer (my e-mail is on, like, every post in this thread) or for more professional service, Ottawa Tourism's site at (http://www.ottawatourism.ca/en/). Hope to see you soon!

1) Parliament of Canada (http://www.parl.gc.ca/Visitors/planning-e.asp)
Imposing as it stands on Parliament Hill, our Parliament buildings, in the Gothic style, are both picturesque and approachable. Feel free to wander the grounds, or (during normal business hours) tours in French or English can be joined. There are nice views of the Ottawa River behind the building.

2) Canadian War Museum (http://www.warmuseum.ca/home/)
May help you power Canadiana Patrick Liao has somehow snuck into the tournament. There's also a cool(?) exhibit where you can simulate World War III.

3) National Gallery of Canada (http://www.gallery.ca/en/)
The National Art Gallery. Includes a lot of cool paintings (such as the Death of Wolfe), permanent exhibits, and generally contemporary features. Well worth a visit (and with a student discount!)

4) Supreme Court of Canada (http://www.scc-csc.gc.ca/home-accueil/#)
Ok, this one is just for me. It is cool, though.

5) Canadian Museum of Nature (http://nature.ca/en/home)
Dinosaurs! And an exhibit on frogs is still on in February! And it's in Canada's former Parliament building! Who could say no?

6) Canadian Museum of Civilization (http://www.civilization.ca/splash)
Not strictly speaking a history museum, this museum, located across the Ottawa river in Quebec, has cultural artifacts from both Canada and around the world. It's particularly well-known for its magnificent collection of totem poles, excellent views of Parliament, and having an entrance shaped like an Olmec head. Last time I was there, there was also a uniformed Mountie for some reason. There's also an IMAX theatre.

7) Canadian Aviation and Space Museum (http://www.aviation.technomuses.ca/)
A little way out of town, but pretty worth it if you like planes. Pride of place is given to Alexander Graham Bell's "Silver Dart", which was partially made of bamboo (oh stewardess! my seat is collapsing!)

8) If anyone is in town on the Thursday, the Ottawa Senators play host to the Buffalo Sabres (for all the Americans out there, this is "ice hockey"). It might be worth watching (come see the sport that isn't curling where Canada is decisively better than America! And always will be!)

9) Gatineau Park (http://www.ncc-ccn.gc.ca/places-to-visit/gatineau-park)
Across the river in Quebec, this is a nice, big, open-air park with lots of trees. It's pretty fun, and some activities to consider include snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Hiking is also available (but don't slip on any ice).

10) Royal Canadian Mint (http://www.mint.ca/store/mint/about-the ... qT04m3B_To)
I wasn't going to recommend this until I noticed that for some reason they minted a $1 million coin.

Winter Stuff!
The Rideau Canal (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) is frozen in February, and can be skated on. It's literally 5 minutes from campus. There's also a skating rink with music and lights and such outside of Ottawa's City Hall, which is also 5 minutes' walk from campus. Also, during February (and SCT), Ottawa's winter festival Winterlude is happening, which features ice sculptures, ridiculously marked-up hot apple cider, and more! (http://www.pch.gc.ca/eng/1379706275276 , with the Confederation Park site being the main one near campus). To be honest, the website doesn't really do it justice.

This is my sixth year commuting to downtown tournaments from Barrhaven and still doesn't make me regret living out there. If a team doesn't mind driving 30 minutes to the tournament site, it's probably not too much out of the way.

Last (anticipated) post of the year here is a bit of a carrot and a stick. I've added both to the initial post, but just to draw your attention to...

CARROT
In addition to other cool stuff (and prizes), there will be book prizes for the winning teams and the top 5 scorers!
Some of the titles available will be Hardy's Under the Greenwood Tree, a collection of Isaac B. Singer's short stories, Hawthorne's The House of the Seven Gables, Measure for Measure, Mary Douglas's Purity and Danger, Black Fire (apparently about an African American Communist-I won this at last year's SCT but haven't read it yet), Edwidge Danticat's Breath, Eyes, Memory and (as a neg prize) an unlicensed biography of Justin Bieber, Get the Scoop. If it gets requested enough I can throw I am America (and So Can You!) and a cool recent book on ice hockey goalies into the mix, but it's gotta draw people...

STICK
Players are requested to have photo identification available on request to prove they are eligible competitors per NAQT's eligibility rules (ie. in broad strokes, that they attend a post-secondary institution). Failure to do so may result in individual/team forfeiture.

Happy New Year everyone!

Just a reminder that registration for this tournament is now open on naqt.com (under "Sectionals" and "Register"). We've extended the early bird deadline to January 14 (for which you get a discount), so early registration (of at least one team) pays off!

For some funky reason, the discounts (according to naqt.com) are slightly out of whack with what we've announced-please take our tournament announcement as the definitive statement (for example, teams from not-Canada DO get $-10). If you have any questions about that, just let me know.

I think I fixed most of this stuff; take a look here and see what you think.

Remaining oddities:

1) naqt.com just marks "staff" discount, not "moderator" or "scorekeeper" (I know we should get this fixed)

2) naqt.com displays travel distances in miles instead of kilometers

The one oddity left is that not all of the discounts listed as unlimited are actually unlimited, but we can cross that bridge when we come to it, I guess

I just got word that the sponsor providing the t-shirts can't do it ("they're too expensive"), so the "t-shirts" may be more figurative than really t-shirts (but like, there'll be something). Working on getting on other swag.

Waterloo would like to withdraw her team in protest.

Jk, Waterloo's confirming a second team, will get around to registering soon (once we know how many staffers we have and such...)

Just a reminder that the 14th is the expiry of the early entry discount. It's not much, but it's an extra beer at the bar afterwards (or an extra beavertail at Winterlude or just $5 to not have to pay).

A few housekeeping things:

1) I have edited the top post with respect to who is coming, based on inquiries/Naqt.com registrations. If you see something different than you intend, please let me know, asap.

2) We're not *quite* able to get the forecast for the SCT weekend yet, but hopefully the "Polar Vortex" will decide to not stick around for it. Regardless, it is going to be VERY cold in Ottawa, and potentially icy or snowy-please bear this in mind while dressing/packing and make sure you stay warm. Remember: layers are good (they can be taken off if you are too warm!)

3) Of course, the garbage weather means that transportation systems (highways, trains, planes, automobiles) may experience delays. Please budget your time accordingly, as the tournament will not wait for you (and of course rushing tends to lead to forgotten things/crashing/etc.). We strongly recommend you give yourself plenty of time to get to Ottawa, and plenty of time to get to the tournament for 8:45 (and NO LATER than 9) SHARP. I repeat, the tournament will NOT wait for you.

4) I will send around an e-mail, but if you or your teammates have any allergies/medical conditions we need to be aware of, please let us know asap. We will strive to be an allergen-sensitive tournament, but (especially if we don't know the situation) we cannot guarantee that allergens (nuts/tree nuts, scents, etc.) won't be present at the University and at this tournament.

5) Teams with clocks-you are our new best friend. Please consider bringing them to this tournament, as we can probably lift the limit on discounts. If you have clocks and want to claim multiple discounts, please contact me.

Toronto isn't sure whether we will have 1 or 2 teams in Div I yet. We are currently sitting at 5 people confirmed and may merge into one team if there is no further interest.

Ok, a couple shifts- Waterloo added a team, and Toronto merged one. Any other changes, please let me know.

The forecast for Feb. 8th is up now: http://www.theweathernetwork.com/14-day ... rio/ottawa
Essentially, it will stay around -10 (Celsius), so again, please remember to bundle up.

Update on prizes/swag. Yes, we have no bananas (or t-shirts). There are books, trophies, and medals for people who do well. There will also be some (small) swag, perhaps stickers or binders (we were at first promised pens, but the pens apparently can't be found). I *can* promise swag in the form of snowballs (a collector item if properly refrigerated) which I can throw at you if you are really insistent on swag.

There will be pepperoni pizza and cheese pizza for sale, with some soft drinks also for sale.

As a final note, please send me a contact number we can reach you at during your time in Ottawa.

Thanks to all the teams who came and competed today-it was definitely an honour to have you all! Also, a great, great big thank you to all our tireless volunteers (particularly Shelby Robert) who kept the tournament running smoothly.
Finally, a huge congratulations to McGill and UAlberta's Sinan! Way to go!

Thanks to Jordan, Shelby, the readers/scorekeepers, and the whole UOttawa team who helped make this a successful tournament! It was incredibly well run and a fantastic experience all around.

I also want to thank the team organizers, as in the few tournaments I have been apart of, this is one of the best run, if not the best. I like that all the moderators were very well versed in the practice, and knew what to do when issues over questions happened. I like to thank the teams that I played against for there competitive but kind nature. Also, I like to thank the fact that I didn't get a sub-zero score like I was afraid of! Anyway, just thanks everybody.
