3M: Chicago Open History Doubles, 7/20
3M: Chicago Open History Doubles, 7/20
Hello! Due to popular demand, CO History Doubles will return for the umpteenth year, with a crisp new haircut, and hopefully with less schedule wrangling. It will tentatively be run on Sunday, July 20th, the day after Chicago Open proper.
Packet Submission
None! This year's instantiation will be written in toto by a team consisting of myself (Mik Larsen), the imperturbable Mike Cheyne, and the indefatigable Eric Mukherjee. I will be writing ancient and medieval, Eric will be writing modern, Mike will be writing American. A not-insubstantial portion of the set has already been written.
Format
Teams will consist of two players, more or less. The format for this tournament will be twelve rounds of 20/0, of which the tournament will probably consist of ten rounds, a finals, and spares. That's right, no bonuses. Actual tournament bracketing will be determined when we're closer to the start date, but the hope is a complete round robin. If not, separate brackets.
Cost
$10 per person.
Distribution
The overall distribution for the tournament is as follows:
240/0
72/0 American
72/0 European
24/0 Continental (France/Germany/Italy/West Europe)
16/0 British/Commonwealth
16/0 Ancient (Greece/Rome/Byzantium/Other)
8/0 Russia
8/0 Other Europe (Scandinavia, Greece, Balkans, Hungary, Poland, East Europe)
72/0 World
16/0 East Asia
16/0 Middle East
10/0 Africa
10/0 South/Central Asia
10/0 South/Latin America
10/0 Extra (SE Asia, Indonesia, Oceania, Islands - plus bonus for the previous categories)
24/0 Other
6/0 Historiography
6/0 Trash
6/0 CE/Supermodern
6/0 Transnational/Other
Via fiat of Mike Cheyne, there shall be powers.
Team Registration and Names:
Teams are free to register from this point on. We retain the right to provide you with a supposedly-humorous name. If you provide one we like, you can keep it. Sign up is official when you have formed a partnership and expressly say so.
I've made a GoogleDoc Spreadsheet here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc ... 2cmc#gid=0
Feel free to use it.
Staffers:
We need them. Also buzzers.

No powers in an Eric Mukherjee tournament?!
Edit: I also wanted this tournament to be called 3MB, but I was overruled. I mean, it fits--Indian guy, guy with a ponytail, and guy with a Scottish last name.

I'm pretty sure I'm coming to this, and I could use a teammate. I know some American, a bunch of Russian and some France stuff. If anyone would like to team up, email or PM me.

Let's try and nail down registration by the beginning of July, so we can think of an appropriate format/schedule.
More specific pricing info to come (can't be more than $10 a person, though, I would guess, if that).
About two thirds of the American history tossups have been written, and I'd like to playtest those at some point with people not playing the set--more info to come (we might wait until full packets are done).

Here is the roster of who I have signed up to play. Please form a team by the beginning of July if you want to play. If this inaccurate, please let me or someone else know. I will send a confirmation e-mail to the teams in July to officially nail down the number of teams.
TEAMS
1. Mike Bentley and Will Nediger (CONFIRMED)
2. Auroni Gupta and Richard Yu (CONFIRMED)
3. Will Alston and Marshall Steinbaum (CONFIRMED)
4. Dan Puma and Matt Weiner (CONFIRMED)
5. Jordan Brownstein and Matt Jackson (CONFIRMED)
6. Jerry Vinokurov and Ryan Westbrook (CONFIRMED)
7. Andrew Hart and Jeff Hoppes (CONFIRMED)
8. Jarret Greene and Patrick Liao (CONFIRMED)
9. Evan Adams and Chris Ray (CONFIRMED)
10. Sam Bailey and Doug Graebner (CONFIRMED)
11. Gautam Kandlikar and Matt Lafer (CONFIRMED)
12. Max Schindler and Ben Zhang (CONFIRMED)
13. Billy Beyer and Chris Borglum (CONFIRMED)
14. Kurtis Droge and Libo Zeng (CONFIRMED)
15. Jay Misuk and Tejas Raje (CONFIRMED)
16. Matt Bollinger and Stephen Liu (CONFIRMED)
17. Brendan Byrne and Mike Sorice (CONFIRMED)
18. Dylan Minark and Austin Listerud (CONFIRMED)
If Kenneth and/or Charlie wish to play, we will assign them to a team to create two teams of three, I guess.
Free Agents
Kenneth Lan (*)
Charlie Dees (*)
(*) indicates person is definitely intending to play. (-) indicates that the person will be at CO anyway, but hasn't confirmed either way.
Some of the free agents on this sheet are not on a CO team, so I'm not sure if they will be here or not. There are enough free agents to form 4-5 teams right now if everyone plays. Please find or create a team if you have not yet.
I'll note that we seem to have a lot of staff, and while I don't want to tempt fate here (we can always use people as stats folks or scorekeepers or gofers), if any staffers were on the fence about playing, go ahead and form a team.

As we have nothing to do Sunday until the literature tournament, Billy Beyer and I would like to sign up for this. However, if the limit of teams based on packets is reached without us, we will happily withdraw. In other words, people ahead of us on the free agent list or who are really hankering to play should get first shot.

Re: 3M: Chicago Open History Doubles, 7/20
Alright, so now we're at 19 teams, with 12 packets. There's a few things that could happen:
1. The ideal scenario would be to collapse to two teams of three to make 18 teams, so we could run a 6/6/6 rebracket into 6/6/6 (either crossover or another new RR, a la CHB), then a final.
2. Another scenario would be to increase the teams to 20, then we can have two brackets of 10, then a best of three final.
I'm not inclined to leave this tournament at 19 teams; thus, I'll lock the field if a 20th team signs up or the number of teams drops to 18 (either by two teams collapsing into teams of 3 or one team dropping out).

Yup, that's fine. And since we'll be there, we can even add or drop the Saturday night before it if need be.

Yeah I was wanting to play and hadn't tried to hard beyond asking one person about forming a team, so if other people want to play message me.

Re: 3M: Chicago Open History Doubles, 7/20
The week prior to the tournament, I will e-mail at least one representative of each team asking for confirmation that they are playing. Free agents should continue to try to form teams; if they don't, we reserve the right to just pair them together and create teams ourselves.

Just to announce that the cost for the end result of our blood, sweat, tears, and other excretions will indeed be $10 per person. Also added to the initial post.

Re: 3M: Chicago Open History Doubles, 7/20
Did Matt Bollinger and Charles Tian really pull out of this tournament to staff or is someone editing the sign up doc again?
I am sending an e-mail to the teams currently signed up asking them to verify their playing or not. Please respond.

Are free agents going to end up being combined into teams?

Who has confirmation for the room reservation for today? Because at the moment (805) we have only two unlocked rooms in Cobb.

Should we discuss the tournament in this thread, or in some other thread?

Re: 3M: Chicago Open History Doubles, 7/20
My intentions for this set were to basically try and ask interesting (to me) answerlines that frequently strayed off the beaten path; I wouldn't hold these up necessarily as something worthy of emulation, but they were (again, to me) pretty interesting things. I wrote every American history question and a few other/trash type things.
