DATE CHANGED - SoCal DEES Mirror (Open) - Jan. 11 @ UCLA
DATE CHANGED - SoCal DEES Mirror (Open) - Jan. 11 @ UCLA
Hello there,
This is to announce that the revivified DEES tournament will be having a Southern California incarnation, hosted at UCLA. Despite my supposed retirement, I guess I'm serving as TD.
The original announcement for DEES can be found at viewtopic.php?f=8&t=16257#p293206. The gist of it is thus - it's a tournament originally designed as packet-submission, but teams at this mirror do not have to submit packets. This is an open tournament - available to collegiate, high school, and open teams of most any sort. The difficulty is targeted as ACF Regionals, erring on the easy side.
Entry fees will be announced shortly but should not deviate much from standard. Same with the precise schedule and room information.
Please register by emailing me at mlarsen-at-ucla.edu or PMing me or posting in this thread. Please note that indecisive Facebook messages do not count as registering for a tournament.

Re: SoCal DEES Mirror (Open) - Dec. 6th @ UCLA
It would be difficult for UCSD, and I suppose most UCs, to organize teams to this given the relative proximity to finals week. Is the date here definite, or is it open to moving to, say, January 10 or something?

I'm definitely open to the possibility, as we have not yet reserved rooms, but I'd like to gather more opinions before making any definite changes. FWIW, this falls on the last weekend before UCLA's finals period.

If this actually happens on January 10, Amherst will send a team (me and Boyang Jiao). Seriously. Neither of us can attend the MIT mirror of DEES this month, but we're both going to be back in California until past mid-January for winter break. This sounds fun.

On a similar note for me, if it's on either Sunday the 11th or Saturday the 18th or Sunday the 19th, I would be very interested in playing my last tournament at my alma mater before entering the working world.Corry wrote:If this actually happens on January 10, Amherst will send a team (me and Boyang Jiao). Boyang and I can make Sunday the 11th, but not Saturday the 17th or Sunday the 18th.Golran wrote:On a similar note for me, if it's on either Sunday the 11th or Saturday the 18th or Sunday the 19th, I would be very interested in playing my last tournament at my alma mater before entering the working world.Corry wrote:If this actually happens on January 10, Amherst will send a team (me and Boyang Jiao). I did a bit of general interest surveying, and at least one team's worth of UCSD players are fine with a Sunday, Jan. 11 date.

I would be interested in playing this on Jan 10 or 11, either solo/on a free agent based team, or with other people from Claremont.

Due to unexpectedly overwhelming interest, we have decided to move our DEES mirror officially to Sunday, January 11.

ASU would like to register for DEES, we possibly would have open spots on our team/be down to join with other people.

So this tournament is not, in fact, an open as stated in the thread title?

It's an open in that non-students may play, but it's slightly more restricted than a normal open in that they can only form teams with other non-students. Exceptions to this rule may be possible--contact Victor if you have questions about such a thing.

Congratulations to Team LaRancho Jolla for clearing the field at the UCLA site of DEES, and to Caltech A for getting second place! Kion You of LaRancho Jolla was the top individual, followed by Sonny Vo from ASU and Eric Bobrow from Caltech A. I'd like to thank the staffers at the tournament: Craig Messner, Justin Su, Ryan Leou, and Steve Emmel. Full results are here.
