11th Annual Hoover Invitational (11/21/15)

Post by Joshua Rutsky »

The 11th Hoover Invitational Tournament will be held at Hoover High School on 11/21/2015, and will feature fields for varsity, JV, and novice competition. We will be using BASK this year as our Varsity set, and will be using the SCOP Novice as our JV/Novice set.

Pricing is as follows:

$70 for the first team entered
$60 for each additional team
$5 discount for a WORKING buzzer set (up to two)

First-time teams, teams from out-of-state, and teams with financial issues are welcome to e-mail directly to request a discount. Lunch will be available on site at $5 per player.

The event will use 20/20 rounds with three bonus parts worth 10 points each. Powers and negs will be used as well; no bounceback or worksheets. For varsity and JV, teams will play in a pool in the AM, followed by lunch and an afternoon single elimination playoff. For the novice pool, teams will play round-robin, then the top four will play a second round-robin to determine final standings.

Trophies will be awarded for the top three teams in each division.

Registration documents are below.

Good Hope should have 1 Varsity, 1 Novice unless inexperienced 11th graders are eligible for JV.

Good Hope should have 1 varsity and 1 novice. Sorry if our registration form said otherwise.

I do believe that this is the single toughest varsity field of any tournament in the history of Alabama Quiz Bowl.

You know, Lee, I think you're right--and I think it is something we all should be pretty proud of here. I am grateful to the folks from Itawamba, Woodford County, and Dorman for choosing our event to travel to for this weekend, but I think that there are a lot of really talented teams here in Alabama that will give these teams their money's worth. We are working hard to make sure this tourney meets the expectations people have for it, and looking forward to hosting. The only thing better would be getting to play, but you can't have everything. :)

This tournament happened. I apologize to all the teams who were delayed by our buzzer issues; we aim to finish by 4PM and tonight we didn't finish until 5:45. That's really not acceptable to us, and we regret the inconvenience it will cause to our guests.

Quick results:

Dorman A won the Varsity bracket over Woodford, KY on the final tossup of the match. It was an outstanding round.
Spain Park defeated Dorman B for Varsity 3rd place.

In JV, Altamont defeated James Clemens for the championship. JV 3rd place went to Woodford, KY.

In the Novice category, Sylacauga was the victor, defeating Woodford, KY. West Point finished in 3rd place.

We actually have the stats basically complete at this point, so I hope to check them over and post them on Monday fairly early. Again, thanks to all of the teams that competed.

We at Itawamba were highly impressed with the quality of the readers and efficiency of the tournament. I got exactly what I wanted for my young team(s): experience against some high quality teams. Thanks for doing such a great job in organizing such a large tournament with so many moving parts.
