Good Hope Invitational Tournament (Cullman, AL)-10/17/15

Post by Zealots of Stockholm »

Good Hope High School is pleased to announce it's first ever scholar's bowl tournament, the Good Hope Invitational! The tournament will be run on Maryland Fall (produced by the University of Maryland).http://www.hsquizbowl.org/forums/viewto ... 09&t=17501 We will use standard NAQT rules (powers, negs, no bouncebacks) without timed rounds. The tournament will be on October 17th, and registration should start around 8:30. For those of you who don't know, Good Hope is located about 2 miles off of exit 304 on I-65, centrally between Birmingham and Huntsville. Registration fees will be as follows:

$65 per team
$55 per additional team
-$20 for any team that does not regularly attend tournaments (this deduction only applies once per school)
-$10 per experienced moderator/staffer
-$5 per buzzer set (max 2 per team)
The minimum fee is $40.

Anyone interested, please register ASAP. You can post below, email me ([email protected]), or email my coach ([email protected]) to register. We look forward to seeing you all in October.

EDIT: forgot to state format on original post.

Field update:
Germantown- 1 team
West Point- 3 teams
James Clemens- 2 teams
Hewitt-Trussville- 2 teams. (1 V, 1 JV)
Springville-2 teams (1 V, 1 JV)

Shown Interest:
Vestavia Hills

We will be gauging trying to gauge interest at West Point's tournament on the 19th, if that is okay with Mr. Henry, of course. We will also be trying to recruit some local teams who aren't very active. If the field size ends up being on the small side (<11 teams), a round robin is likely.

Good luck. I sent invites to every team in Cullman County begging them to come. I even offered huge discounts to those schools who don't normally attend invitationals.

Responses I got: zero.

Hey Chandler, sorry for not confirming our registration earlier. James Clemens will be bringing one to two teams depending on the availability of people that weekend on our team. We'll be bringing a buzzer system as well. Thanks!

I think the best chance of getting more teams would be to send out invitations to teams in the Huntsville and Birmingham areas. The drive is less than an hour from these areas and they may not have registered for GH because they might not have heard about it. Buckhorn, Russellville, Arab, Hoover, just some suggestions. Maybe also look at teams that have registered for WRK and West Point's Housewrite. Just an idea. See you soon!

You may want to visit the ASCA members list here. Even though it's from last year, it would to your advantage to send a mass invite to teams in the area you are hoping to reach.

If you are planning on attending this, please try and give a definite number of teams you are bringing by around October 10th. However, there will be no official registration deadline, as we hope to have as many teams as possible.

Field update (as of 10/12):

Evangel Classical Christian-1 team
Hewitt-Trussville- 2 teams (1 V, 1 JV)
Hoover- 2 teams
James Clemens- 2 teams
Spain Park- 2 teams
Vestavia Hills- 3 teams
West Point- 4 teams (2 V, 2 JV)

Anyone else planning on coming will need to have someone willing to moderate, and a buzzer set, as we are at capacity with the readers and buzzers we have available, and want to make sure we run a quality tournament. Also, please let me know if one (or more) of your teams is JV, so we can see about the possibility of awarding a JV champion.

If you do so, could you bring a buzzer set and be available to read if necessary? Spain Park is undecided on number of teams, so this may or may not be necessary). We hate to ask this, but as soon as we realized we only had 7 good readers available, we knew we had to cap the field rather than not have enough readers.

EDIT: Actually, just got confirmation that Spain Park is bringing two teams, so we will definitely need a reader if you bring a fourth..

Hoover is interested in bringing a team if space permits. We can supply buzzers and a reader.

If Hoover is coming and bringing another moderator, will that open up our 4th team without a moderator? We can still bring some buzzers.

Yes, it will. Bringing buzzers would be great. Do either you or Mr. Rutsky have any advice on running a tournament with 17 teams?? I'm stumped other than just having one pool of 9 and one pool of 8.

Also, congrats to both of you for impressive finishes yesterday.

I will try to get two teams together. This should be doable. In that case, you would be best served with three pools of six playing and then a playoff in the afternoon. Three pools of six means a total of nine rooms to staff. How many readers do you have at this point?

We currently have 8 readers, including Hoover's reader. If West Point drops to three, I would prefer Hoover only bring one team and we would have two pools of eight. If West Point has four teams, feel free to bring a second and we could run two pools of 9 (since we wouldn't have enough readers for three pools of six).

Alright... Sorry to keep going back-and-forth, but I'm going to go ahead and bring 4 teams. One of them may only have 3 players, but that's better than those kids not getting to play just because one or two kids aren't coming. Plus, we've already got the check cut for 4 teams.

Please let me know if you will have one or two readers ASAP. If you have two, we will run three pools of six. If you have one, we will do two pools of nine. Thanks.

Also, if all coaches could submit rosters prior to the tournament date, that would be great.

You're welcome. The field above should be pretty finalized, as the only other team I had a hunch may come confirmed today that they couldn't. Also, is there any way either you or Mr. Henry could offer some advice on pools? I know how good most of the teams coming are, but there are a few I know nothing about, have never played against, and have no stats from this year to look at. (Since WRK stats aren't up..)

Chandler -

Here's the situation as I see it - You've got 4 really strong teams (Spain Park A, James Clemens A, Hoover A, and West Point A). You've also got at least one potential "upset" team that could beat any one of those four with the right packet (Vestavia A). Spain Park B and Hoover B are no pushovers, either. And, Germantown is sort of a wildcard that we know little about. So, ideally, I'd take those 8, and make sure that no pool has more than 2 of them in it. But, seeing as there are only 3 pools, that's impossible. So, then, I'd "seed" the rest as best as possible based on the information we have from SMART I and WRK.

When I applied the method (mostly alphabetical) that I use in making pools for our tournaments, this is how it worked out:

Pool A - West Point A, West Point D, Vestavia Hills C, Spain Park A, James Clemens B, Hewitt-Trussville A
Pool B - West Point B, Vestavia Hills A, Springville A, Spain Park B, Hoover A, Hewitt-Trussville B
Pool C - West Point C, Vestavia Hills B, Springville B, James Clemens A, Hoover B, Germantown

While the idea of playing Spain Park A in the prelims gives me an ulcer, these pools actually look fairly good without having to tamper with them. But, this is just a suggestion based on how I do things. This is, of course, your tournament and you can do it however you want.

I would like to know what your thoughts are in regards to playoffs. Will they be single-elimination or re-bracketed? Ideally, I'd like to do a re-bracket with the top 6, but that would mean 10 rounds of play. I'm not sure how long you intend this tournament to be.

Thank you both for the advice. We now are down to 16 teams, so 2 brackets of 8. I will make sure the four teams Mr. Henry mentioned above are equally split. In regards to playoffs, I am also a fan of rebracketing, but I hate the idea of having a four team playoff when there are four very elite teams present, and I don't think any of the teams would be up for playing all 14 rounds. That being said, it is likely we will do an 8 team single-elimination playoff. If there is enough interest, we could make the final round a best of three. Opinions on this?

EDIT: I completely read wrong and thought you said "rebracket top four." I like the idea of rebracketing the top six much better, but I will still have to ask my coach and gather opinions on that format, as that would be 12 rounds..

I looked at what Rutsky sent. It looks good. The only thing to consider is that West Point C is going to be exponentially stronger than WP B and WP D.

Of course, I could switch the rosters myself to level that field.

I'll label them as "JV A" and "JV B" and assume that Varsity A>JV A> Varsity B> JV B.
Is this safe to assume?

Coaches, if I have not already contacted you, please be at Good Hope between 8:00 and 8:30 on Saturday. We hope to start playing by 9:00. Also, we will have lunch on site so bring $5 for that too.

Stats for pool play are now up. For the record, West Point A won pool A due to head to head, but the stat report won't show that.
