The University of Michigan will be running MLK XVII on January 16, 2016, the weekend before the eponymous holiday.
This set will be completely written and edited by the University of Michigan team and playable by anyone enrolled in school. We will produce 15 packets of difficulty that uses Penn Bowl 2014 as a start point but ends up more accessible, on a slightly skewed "bell-curve" scheme of difficulty, in which every packet will have several tossups with easier-than-average answerlines, and maybe one or two tossups with answerlines of harder-than-average difficulty. We will work hard to provide all of our bonuses with true easy parts answerable by the majority of teams playing. We are proactively seeking mirrors for this tournament, which you can run for $30/team (contact Roxanne Ilagan at railagan AT umich.edu if interested). Hosts are free to set their own payment schedules so long as they meet the mirror fee requirement.
The distribution for the tournament will be as follows:
4/4 Literature - 1/1 each American, British, and European (including classical), 1/1 Non-Western, transnational, and more of the previous three
4/4 History - 1/1 each American and World, 1/0 or 0/1 British, 1/2 or 2/1 other European (including Classical)
4/4 Science - 1/1 each Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, 1/1 Other Science (Math, Earth Science, Astronomy, Computer Science)
3/3 RMP - 1/1 each Religion, Mythology, and Philosophy
3/3 Arts - 1/1 each Painting, Classical Music, 1/0 or 0/1 Other Visual Arts (Film, Sculpture, Architecture, Photography, Misc.), 1/0 or 0/1 Other Auditory Arts (Opera, Ballet, Jazz, Misc.)
1/1 Social Science
1/1 Geography, Current Events, Other

The list of hosts has been updated in the first post. If you're hosting, please post your announcement soon, and if you're in the Northwest, Lower Midwest, Canada, and UK, and you want to play this excellent tournament, please email Roxanne about hosting!

Rochester, NY is closer to more of the Canadian teams than it is to most schools of the Northeast circuit; I genuinely hope there's another mirror bid for the Northeast, or field attendance is likely to suffer.
I'm probably willing to make the drive, but I'm not sure the same can be said for teams like Harvard who would be stuck driving nearly eight hours.

Another mirror update has been posted. We're in talks with a few teams to get a more conveniently-located Northeast site.

Sites updated [with links to all tournament announcements thus far]. Note that the Northeast mirror will run a month later than the other sites, on Feb. 20 at Brown University.

Re: MLK XVII - University of Michigan - 01/16/16
Due to unforeseen circumstances, Brown had to back out of hosting, so we are still seeking a New England mirror. I'd really like to see this tournament be played in one of quizbowl's most active regions, so please contact Roxanne and specify which date (any open weekend from 1/16 to Brown's planned 2/20 tournament) works best for you.

Columbia will host the Northeast mirror of this set on February 20. Also, if you played this set this weekend, there is now a discussion forum that you can join through your usergroups. (User Control Panel > Usergroups > select 2016 MLK Discussion and request to join)
