Pete Rose Reinstatement Scholarship Tournament
Hello!
This is the announcement for the Pete Rose Reinstatement Scholarship Tournament, a baseball based trash “tournament” written by yours truly. There will be 100 tossups that will be broken into 5 packets of 20. There won't be a specific distribution by packet but the tossups will be made up of
40 players (30 from the last 20 years, 10 from prior to that )
10 Managers
10 Teams (Not just franchises, but memorable teams, for example "The 2012 Tigers.")
5 Games (
5 Parks
5 STATTTS (UZR, WRC+, SIERA, etc)
10 "Positions" (This will be much more general than you'd think)
10 "other" (GM's, strategies, etc, basically anything related to baseball that I don't think fits in the previous categories)
5 Huge Dingers (For those who don't know baseball, this is a term for homerun)
Clues will be anything that I find to be related to the topic, including non-baseball clues.
Since a lot of these things have never been and never will be tossed up again, it's hard to qualify what the difficulty will be, although I will be aiming to make them comparable to baseball tossups at near-regular difficulty tournaments.
There will be dingers and super dingers.
The fee to play will be five dollars.
This set will be done by March, although I most likely will run it personally at HSNCT or during the downtime during one of the college nationals. If you wish to mirror it, e-mail me at [email protected]
The top scorer will be rewarded with a signed Jose Valverde baseball so you can always feel good about your life due to not being nicknamed Papa Grande.
Half of the profits will be donated to a scholarship of the winning teams choice (this will be a rule for all potential mirrors of the set as well)
Feel free to ask any questions regarding this set. And to answer a question that many probably asked after Ryan Leaf, yes, I will actually be randomizing these packets.

I welcome such a tournament, but yes, just in case the critiques after Ryan Leaf weren't clear:
-randomize the packets
-playtest stuff so you can be aware of problematic lead-ins/clues

I have only become a baseball fan over the last 3 or 4 years and still watch very casually, so I will likely not do well at this tournament, but I would still like to play.

Sounds like it's intended to be run at HSNCT, but could be mirrored other places (I would really like to play it but I don't know if I'll be at HSNCT, so hopefully it gets mirrored).

(Appropriately enough, if I'm not at HSNCT, it'll be because I'll be watching baseball at Wrigley Field).

You are correct! I intend to run it at HSNCT but plan on having it done around Marchish early April, where it will be available for mirroring under the rules of charity that I previously mentioned.

Re: Pete Rose Reinstatement Scholarship Tournament
I would definitely like to play and redeem myself for my poor performance in the finals of your NFL tournament last year. I would suggest, though, to have slightly fewer Detroit questions than you did in the NFL set because the Lions distribution was like 2/2 and I was the only player from Michigan so that was pretty nice. I think I already have a Valverde card, but it's awesome that you giving money to a scholarship fund--so hopefully I will get you to give the money to MSU's scholarship fund.

Heh, there were multiple people from Michigan (including me) at that tournament, which made for some fun buzzer races.

I make my answerlines on a merit based system and since Detroit sports are the best sports, they get the most tossups.

Yeah I forgot how there was a lot of Michigan people there. I apologize Mike Cheyne. Austin Foos and his father also played on a team and they are from Michigan. I must have made an error because of my bias towards Detroit sports. Once again, my apologies. I will not try to jump to rash conclusions as often.Kilroy Was Here wrote:In Africa, lion kills zebra. Re: Pete Rose Reinstatement Scholarship Tournament
To further assure concerns people may have after Ryan Leaf, I, due to my utter lack of baseball knowledge, will be focusing exclusively on packetizing and editing. This means a much more coherent set overall and a distinct lack of five stadium toss ups in row. As an additional benefit, this means that there will be a 2nd pair of eyes to watch how much Detroit content goes into the set.

To say that I am interested in playing this at HSNCT, either solo or with teammates, is an understatement along the lines of saying that Bert Blyleven had a "fair-to-middling" curveball. Count me in right now.

As it turns out, this was a little ambitious. It looks like the updated timetable is that the set will, likely, be finished around the time of VCU Open.Kilroy Was Here wrote:
