2016 MOQBA Fall Championship - 12/10/2016, Columbia, MO

Post by Deckard Cain »

The Missouri Quizbowl Alliance is pleased to announce that we will be hosting the MOQBA Fall Championship on December 10, 2016 at Columbia College in Columbia, Missouri. As this is one of MOQBA's flagship events, we expect to host a geographically diverse field and encourage high school teams from every corner of the state to attend.

The MOQBA Fall Championship will use the 2016 Harvard Fall Tournament (HFT) set written and edited by the Harvard University academic team. As of October 6, this set was not assigned to any other tournament in Missouri. It is your responsibility to ensure that your team has not previously heard this question set and will not compete in any other tournaments using this set. Question set assignments are subject to change at any time; a list of tournaments known to be using this set is available in the forum thread linked above.

The field will initially be capped at 24 teams, with the possibility of expansion if we can procure enough staff and game rooms. Games consist of 20 tossups with three part nonrebounding bonuses. We will be using 15 point powers and 5 point negs.

Check in on the morning of the tournament begins at 7:45 AM, with a brief introductory meeting around 8:30 before round 1 starts around 9:00. All teams will be guaranteed approximately 9-10 games, ending around 4:00 PM, with any necessary finals and tiebreakers to follow. We expect this tournament to receive platinum certification from the Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence; if that occurs, the top 25% of the field will qualify for the National Scholastic Championship in Chicago on June 10-11, 2017.

Pricing
  • First team from a school: $70
  • Subsequent teams from a school: $65 each
  • Buzzer discount: $5 discount for each working buzzer system your school brings (limit 2). Each system must be fully functional for eight players to receive the discount.
  • Travel discount: $10 discount if your school travels at least 100 miles to the tournament (one-way, as determined by Google Maps)
Staff discounts:
All staffers will be needed throughout the day since all teams will be playing. Staffers will be provided lunch.
  • Scorekeeper discount: $10 discount for providing a competent scorekeeper.
  • Moderator discount: $25 discount for providing an experienced moderator. Moderators must be able to complete a 20 tossup/bonus game in 25-30 minutes to keep the tournament on schedule. We will reserve the right to choose our moderators.
  • For schools that provide staff, the minimum fee per team is $0.
Registration
To register, please complete this registration form. Registrations will be processed in the order they are received through this form, and will not be accepted via any other method. Please note that your registration is not official until you receive a confirmation email and your teams appear in the posted field list maintained on the Missouri Quizbowl Message Board.

We will be hosting our other flagship tournament, the NAQT Missouri Qualifier, on March 4th on the campus of William Woods University in Fulton. Registration for that tournament will open in November, but we encourage all Missouri high school teams to complete this short form now to express interest in the Qualifier, which historically fills extremely quickly once registration opens. We will send schools that complete the interest form an invitation to register early.

We hope to see you and your team in Columbia in December and wish you the best of luck as you compete this season. If you have any questions about the tournament, don't hesitate to ask at [email protected].

Sincerely,
Jeffrey Hill and Matt Chadbourne

The initial 24 team field has filled and we currently have 6 teams on the waitlist. We will give priority to waitlisted teams that offer to provide staff, as it will allow us to expand the field sooner assuming we confirm that we have additional rooms available.

Also, we are pleased to announce that we have officially received MSHSAA sanctioning for this tournament.

We are happy to announce that we have expanded the field to 30 teams! This means that St. Joseph Central, Centralia, Hannibal A and B, Moberly and Sparta have been added to the field.

There is a possibility of further expansion to 32 teams in the near future, but that is probably the largest field size that we can accommodate. If there are still any teams interested in attending, though, go ahead and register! It is always possible that a team or two will drop from the field as tournament day approaches. Also, if you can bring a moderator or scorekeeper with you to staff, you will automatically be placed at the top of the waitlist.

It is unfortunately very unlikely at this point that we will be able to expand the field any further than our current 32-team cap.

The field has been updated once again. Looking forward to hosting!

Hope the tournament went well, and that everyone enjoyed the set! And congratulations to Washington for winning the tournament.

As a reminder, we still have many mirrors planned, so please refrain from discussing the set publicly. Instead, feel free to join the private discussion group where many comments have already been made, which you can do by (quoting myself):

We would like to thank everyone for attending the 2016 MOQBA Fall Championship.

Our tournament champion was Washington A, who went a perfect 11-0 on the day and finished two games clear of the remainder of the field and thus won the tournament without needing to play a final. The remaining three superplayoff teams finished tied with identical 9-2 records; after breaking that tie, Hickman A took second place, Rock Bridge A third and Helias A fourth.

Full results have been posted to the Missouri Quizbowl Alliance website at http://fc.moqba.org/2016/.

On the strength of these results, the top eight teams (Washington A, Hickman A, Rock Bridge A, Helias A, Hallsville, St. Joseph Central, Washington B, and Rock Bridge B) have qualified for the PACE National Scholastic Championship, which will be held June 10-11 at the Hyatt Regency O'Hare in the suburbs of Chicago. Information on this national championship event can be found at http://www.pace-nsc.org.

This tournament could not have run nearly as smoothly as it did without the gracious support of our volunteer moderators and scorekeepers. We would like to offer heartfelt thank-yous to everyone who donated their time and energy on Saturday: Shaina from Hickman; Jimmy and Mike from Kickapoo; Joanna from Rock Bridge; Scott from St. Joseph Central; Philip Hopkins from Sparta; Joel Doepker, Leo, Michael, Samantha, and Silas from Washington; Dr. Curtis Mason from Columbia College; coaches Kathy Brandon, Jon Deering, Greg Irwin, Ginger Luetkemeyer, Angela Odom, and Michelle Oliver; Alexander Harmata, Rachel McNeill; and fellow MOQBA members Scott Allen, Brandon Daake, David Dennis, Kyle Hill, Stephanie Hull, Ryan Kennedy, Jason Loy, Josh Malecki, Sean Phillips, Alex Smith, and Kevin Stockman. It simply would not have been possible to run an event of this magnitude without everyone's generous help.

In addition, we are also extremely grateful for the incredible support we always receive from Columbia College to help our events run smoothly. The tireless efforts of Kimberly Craig, Kristen Hartmann, and the rest of the Columbia College team made our jobs as tournament directors much, much easier.

We sincerely hope that everyone managed to enjoy themselves on Saturday, despite the tournament running somewhat later into the evening than we anticipated. We are always striving to provide better tournaments, so any and all feedback is appreciated.

Finally, we would like to remind everyone that the Missouri Quizbowl Alliance is hosting the tenth annual NAQT Missouri Qualifier on March 4 on the campus of William Woods University in Fulton, and the two of us who co-directed this Saturday's tournament will be running that event together as well. Information about the tournament is posted at http://q.moqba.org/2017/.

Best of luck to each of your teams as they compete the rest of the season!
