Re: GVQBT IV: Feb 11, 2017 @ Great Valley (Malvern, PA)
GVQBT Format Overview
The 20 team field featured four brackets of 5 teams in the morning, with a cross bracket round robin being used (Each team from Group A played all teams from Group B and so forth). The top two teams from each group advanced into the playoffs, with carryover games counting for the playoff bracket only. The only caveat on the top two was that no team would be eliminated with a 4-1 record. If a bracket played 5-0, 4-1, 4-1, the two 4-1 teams played a half packet tiebreaker for the playoff spot. Other ties were broken on the basis of PPG. The basis of this was that no team would be eliminated with only one loss. (Tiebreakers would count as second loss). The top 8 then played the remaining 5 teams in the PM (each team started 2-0, 1-1, or 0-2), with an advantaged final--if necessary--being used to determine the champion. We will post a separate thread/add to the existing thread about this format.
Open Division Recap
In the Open Division, Manheim Township A and Lehigh Valley A swept their preliminary matches to go 5-0 in the AM. They then swept through the PM until playing each other in Round 10 (for advantage into the finals). Round 10 saw Manheim Township A prevail. The advantaged final, however, told a different story as Lehigh Valley Academy rallied to win two straight to become the GVQBT IV Champions. Alex Schmidt was recognized as the tournaments highest scorer.
In other parts of the Open Division, Camp Hill and Downingtown East played their ways to 3rd and 4th place, continuing their impressive seasons. Circuit newcomer, Downingtown STEM, led by Junior Vishwa Shanmugam, finished 5th. Rounding out the top 8 were Lancaster Mennonite, Concord, and Manheim Township B.
Novice Division Recap
In the Novice Division, Manheim Township C swept the field to win the title, defeating Haverford in the first game of the advantaged final. Haverford, playing for the first time in pyramidal quiz bowl, found themselves benefiting from the crossover bracket and dropping a morning loss before rolling to a 6-1 afternoon en route to the final. Central Bucks East A finished 3rd after losing a tight match in round 10 to Haverford in the de facto semifinal. Great Valley MS B--consisting of 7th graders--finished 4th in the Novice Division.
Rounding out the Novice Division playoffs were Friends Select B, Great Valley MS A, PALCS, and SLA. Friends Select B finished 5th over Great Valley MS A (6th) and PALCS (7th) via a PPG tiebreaker.
Overall Notes
Thank you to Bill Tressler, Ben Herman, Chris Chiego, Ryan Sharafuddin, Chuck Schmidt, Erin Kodis, Kyle Hess, Kate Campbell, Rebecca Rosenthal, Jack Rubien, and Emelie for giving up their time to help out.
Thank you also goes out to HS coaches/staffers that gave forfeited time with their respective teams to moderate, including Brian (Carver E&S), Andrew Bauer (CB East), Shane Thomas (Cedar Crest), Pete Schmidt (LVA), Steve Sobieck (Henderson), Ian (Friends Select), Kevin DeVizia (Del Val), and Heather Schnader (Lancaster Mennonite).
Also, a big shoutout to all the GV Quiz Bowl players and GV Students who gave up a Saturday for this event to run smoothly.
We welcome any feedback from the event and hope to see everyone at next year's iteration of GVQBT!
*NOTE: We are still working on finalizing the stats. We are aware of a few name issues and a few stat mistakes (notably, Round 10 of MT-LVA).

The neg5 stats for Lehigh Valley seem weird: their first game against Mannheim Township A has no individual stats or ppb recorded despite having scored 290 points.

Please see our previous quote. We are aware of this error. I can't fix it until I get back to the school on Tuesday for the paper scoresheet. It will be fixed ASAP. Thanks!
