2017 Tartan Invitational @ Carnegie Mellon - 2/11

Post by Silverman »

Carnegie Mellon Quiz Bowl will host the 2017 Tartan Invitational tournament on its Pittsburgh campus on Saturday, February 11, 2016.

Permission slips: CMU has tightened their Act 153 child protection regulations. As such, every participating student will need to fill out and sign a permission form to play the tournament. Those under 18 will need to have a parent or guardian sign; non-minors may sign for themselves. These forms will be provided well in advance by email, and we will have additional forms available the day of just in case for legal adults. If you have any questions, please email me to clarify.

Questions: NAQT set IS-162.

Format: Standard NAQT format (https://www.naqt.com/rules.html).

Nationals Qualification: The top 15% of the field will qualify for NAQT's HSNCT. The top 30% of small schools will qualify for NAQT's SSNCT. This tournament is a PACE gold qualifier, so the top 20% of teams will qualify for NSC.

Field Size: There is an initial soft cap of 16 teams, with potential to expand pending staff.

Registration: To register, please email me at ssilverm[at]cmu[dot]edu with the number of teams, buzzers, and moderators you plan to bring. None of these are required, but are highly encouraged. Registration will close on Friday, February 3.

Fees and discounts:

-First team: $75
-Additional teams: $65 each
-Buzzer system: -$10 each
-Moderator/scorekeeper: -$15 each

Minimum fee per team: $40. Buzzers must be completely functional with at least 8 signaling devices to receive discount; moderators should be experienced.

Payment: Please make checks out to "Carnegie Mellon University". We prefer to be paid with cash or check on the day of the tournament; please email if you need to make other arrangements.

Schedule: Day-of registration will be from 8:30 to 9:00 am, with round 1 starting by 9:30. Number of rounds and playoff/finals format will be determined by the field size. Logistical information will be provided to registered teams.

This cap has been reached. Subsequent registrants will be placed on the waitlist until more staff can be secured.

Edit: cap expanded to 18. Possibly more to come.
