Columbia Spring Tournament - March 4, 2017

Post by Loungeact »

The Columbia University Quiz Bowl team is pleased to invite your school to compete at our spring quiz bowl tournament, which will be held on Saturday, March 4th, 2017, in Columbia University's Hamilton Hall. This tournament is part of the second-annual Columbia Cup series of tournaments hosted at Columbia University. More information about the Columbia Cup, as well as a copy of this announcement and further details about the tournament, can be found on the Columbia Cup website.

Nationals: Teams finishing in the top 25% of the National division at this tournament will qualify for the National Scholastic Championship sponsored by the Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence, which will be held in Chicago on June 10th and 11th, 2017.

As well, Teams that finish in the Top 7 of the National Division will qualify for HSNCT, sponsored by NAQT, which will be held in Atlanta, GA, on May 26–28, 2017.

Questions: The questions for this tournament will come from NAQT IS-166. More details about the set can be found at this link, and practice questions similar to these can be found at http://www.quizbowlpackets.com.

Tournament format: Morning check-in for this tournament will run from 8:00 to 8:30 AM. The introductory meeting will then follow, and the first round will start as soon as possible afterwards. All teams will be guaranteed around 8 or 9 matches, depending on the final number of teams attending. Most teams should be done at around 4:00 to 4:30 PM at the latest.

New in 2016-2017: This year, like our Fall Tournament, we are dividing our Winter tournament into a National division, for teams with highly experienced and competitive players, and a Standard division, for all other teams. Please note that this is not a Varsity/JV split – you are encouraged to register varsity teams in the Standard division if you feel like that will be a better fit for them. For now, we are capping the National division at 18 teams and the Standard division at 24 teams, though the exact numbers may change if demand for one is much higher than demand for the other.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you have already registered teams for all three Columbia Cup tournaments, you do not need to re-register them using this form. Teams that you register using this form will in addition to the teams you already registered for all three Columbia Cup tournaments.

If you have a team that you registered for all three Columbia Cup tournaments, and would like to switch the team's division for the Columbia Winter tournament, please email [email protected] with your request.

Teams: Each school may register as many teams as they would like in either division or in both divisions. Each team's roster may contain no more than six players, four of which will be playing at any given time during a game. You are encouraged to register novice and JV teams as well in the Standard division. In addition, we encourage schools to register additional teams instead of putting alternates as 5th or 6th players on existing teams.

Registration: To register for this tournament, please fill out the registration form on the Registration page of the Columbia Cup website. We will email you to confirm your registration promptly. Please note that registration for this tournament will close on February 26, 2017. Before registration opens, we encourage you to gauge the availability of the students on your team, so that you know how many teams to register once registration opens.

Tournament fees and discounts:

Base fee: $70/team
Base fee for new schools*: $45/team

*New schools are defined as schools in NY, NJ, or CT that have not attended a quiz bowl tournament at Columbia University before the 2016-2017 school year.

There are also discounts for bringing buzzers and staffers, or being a participant in Regional Quiz Bowl. In addition, we also offer financial assistance for schools in need of it. Please see the fees and discounts page of the Columbia Cup website for a more complete overview of fees and discounts.

Payment: All entry and registration fees must be paid either in advance or during morning check-in.

If you are paying by check, please make it payable to "Columbia University," with "Quiz Bowl" on the memo line. We will also accept cash on the day of the tournament. If you are mailing a check in advance, we recommend that it be sent no later than two weeks before the tournament, and the check should be mailed to:

Darien/"Mather" registered for all three tournaments in the cup but isn't listed in the field.

North Babylon only wants one team in the Nationals Division. This mistake was most likely on my part as I registered two times to make sure. Thank you

Is there any chance that the Standard Division could expand to make room for the numerous teams on the waitlist?

Lexington would appreciate it if the field was updated. As North Babylon dropped one team from the National Division and we signed one team up, we'd like to see if we made it into the field, in order to prepare and plan accordingly. Thanks!

Hi Casey,

Sorry for the delay in response (I have been ill with the flu all week). At this state, where we are already running a tournament of this logistical magnitude and with our current arrangements, the room for expansion is just not there. Perhaps next year we will have a discussion about raising the cap for Columbia Spring specifically.

Good evening... Have any updates been made to the open fields for both the National and Standard divisions?

Island Trees (Levittown, NY) registered one team for each this past weekend, but I am sure we are on the wait list for both.

Do you anticipate any changes?

Thanks!

To echo the above sentiment, it certainly would be nice to receive more frequent updates about the field, especially considering that the tournament is in less than a week and we still are unsure of how we can plan logistically because we don't know how many teams to bring.

We just dropped, which will open up a spot in the Nationals division (though I don't know if anyone else dropped).

Has a logistics email been sent out to competing teams yet? I haven't gotten one, but I'm not sure if it's because I didn't fill out the registration form (having no new teams to sign up beyond those already signed up for the Cup). I especially ask because one of my students posted in my team's internal forum that Ben Zhang had announced the tournament might not happen, and I've heard nothing of the sort nor do I see anything here of that nature.

On a separate note, is there any tabulation of the Columbia Cup school standings after two events?

Good afternoon...

I am assuming that Tuesday's posting of teams is the FINAL list of competitors. As a result, Island Trees will not be attending, unless we hear otherwise regarding the National division. It would be wasteful to come into NYC tomorrow morning without any guarantee of competing.

Please advise if the current team listing is final.

Thanks!

At this tournament, in the National Division, Hunter A swept the field while High Tech beat Ithaca A in overtime to take 2nd place! In the Standard Division, Great Neck South C beat Ithaca B to win! Congratulations to everyone who participated!
