Virginia NAQT States @ UVa (4/1/17)

Post by Beevor Feevor »

The Academic Competition Club at UVA will be hosting the Virginia NAQT State Championship on April 1st, 2017 using NAQT IS-166, the designated state tournament set. We will not be using computational math tossups at this tournament, and the field is capped at 40 teams. All Virginia middle and high schools, public and private, are eligible for this tournament.

Location: This tournament will be held in New Cabell Hall in Room 168. Registration will start at 8:00 A.M. and go until 8:30 A.M. You risk forfeiting your games if you arrive later than this time, so please be on time!

Parking: There is a decent-sized parking lot quite close to New Cabell. An address you can plug into a GPS that will get you close to this lot is 400 Brandon Avenue, Charlottesville, VA. That address is for the Elson Student Health Center, which will be on your left as you turn onto Brandon from Jefferson Park Avenue. Student Health also has a parking lot but threatens to tow without a UVA permit. The lot I suggest is past Student Health on Brandon Ave and will be on the right. Once you've parked, New Cabell Hall is the very large building across Jefferson Park Avenue. If you cross the street at JPA and Brandon, turn left and walk up the ramp or stairs to the side door of the building, which will put you on the first floor on the right side of the building. Both stairs and an elevator are accessible from this entrance.

Affiliation: The top 15% of the field will automatically qualify for the NAQT High School National Championship Tournament, which will take place this year in Atlanta, GA during Memorial Day Weekend, May 26-28, 2017. More information about HSNCT will be provided to teams at the tournament proper. We have also received a Platinum Certification from the Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence, or PACE. This qualifies the top 25% of teams to attend the National Scholastic Championship, which will take place this year at the Hyatt Regency O'Hare in Chicago, IL from June 10-11, 2017.

Team size: There can be a maximum number of 6 players on each team’s roster, with substitutions possible at half-time and between games. If you wish to bring 7 or 8 players, we ask that you register a second team, and so on for anyone with larger numbers of players.

Food: There is a buffet-style dining hall near New Cabell Hall that will be open on this date. We’ll have a list of other food options available on the day of the tournament as well. We will not be providing breakfast or lunch for teams.

Fee structure:
Base fee: $75 per team (note that this is $5 more than previous tournaments, due to the University's new requirement that we purchase event insurance for high school tournaments).
Buzzer discount: $5 for each system on which the control box and 8 buzzers work.
Staff discount: $10 for a scorekeeper, $20 for a competent moderator. Please include your moderator's name and experience during your registration. All moderator discounts are subject to UVa approval before the discount is granted.
Travel discount (150 miles or more, one way): $10
Minimum fee: $45

To register, please email the tournament director, Eric Xu, at [email protected]. Checks should be made out to “Academic Competition Club,” though we can also accept cash. Please pay either in advance or, preferably, on the day of the tournament. If you wish to pay in advance, please indicate this in your registration and I will send you an address. Likewise, please let him know if you require either an invoice or a W-9 form.

We hope to see you all in March!

We have just received confirmation that we will indeed be a Platinum qualifier for PACE NSC once again this year! Also, we have received our first registration, so get those in ASAP to ensure that your team has a spot in the field.

Unfortunately, due to scheduling conflicts with our room provider, we've had to move NAQT States back to April 1st, which is still a Saturday. On the bright side, however, we have managed to get 22 rooms for the event, which allows us to comfortably move up to a 40-team field cap!

After a few drops here and a few adds there, we're at 34 teams for this tournament. Registration is now closed, and all teams should have gotten a registration email from me about the tournament. Looking forward to seeing you all there on Saturday!

After a well-fought day of Quizbowl, Thomas Jefferson A emerged as the winner after defeating Maggie Walker A in a one-game final to win the Virginia 2017 NAQT States! Maggie Walker B finished in 3rd place after losing a tiebreaker to play TJ A in the finals.

Stats can be found here. Best of luck to all teams at this tournament going to nationals!

Yes, I believe so, but because nationals are already full, it's mainly for pride purposes!
