Thought Monstrosity (Summer 2017)

Post by women, fire and dangerous things » Thu Nov 10, 2016 12:23 am

This is the announcement for Thought Monstrosity, a side event about philosophy, social science, and other "thought," which will be ready in time for the traditional "second summer open" slot. The tournament will be written by Young Fenimore Lee, JinAh Kim and Caleb Kendrick, and head edited by me. It will cost $10 a person to play.

Our plan is to write 8 packets of 20/20, with the following distribution:

1/1 classical philosophy
1/1 medieval philosophy
2/2 early modern philosophy
2/2 19th-century philosophy
3/3 20th-century philosophy
5/5 other philosophy (mixed, non-western, and any other answerlines)
1/1 sociology
1/1 psychology
1/1 economics
1/1 anthropology
1/1 linguistics/other social science
1/1 other thought (including stuff like literary/art criticism and historiography)

The tournament will be of Nats+ difficulty, with strict control of answerline difficulty, and promises to be full of interesting and underexplored content, in the vein of other recent tournaments of similar stock, such as VICO and Christmas Present.

What's the status of this tournament (i.e. will it be complete and how many packets will there be?)

(I am simply asking to determine logistics for the summer opens; I do not mean to insinuate that it's not completed)

The set is complete. If you can't/couldn't make it to either the VCU or Michigan sites, I'll be running a Skype mirror on August 26th. More details can be found here.

All mirrors are complete so I'll post the set soon, but I'll read packet 7 in the IRC at 7:00 PM Eastern tomorrow for interested parties.
