FLOREAT (Global Announcement)

Post by Slightly Less British »

I’m pleased to announce that, after a well-received debut as a side tournament to Oxford Open, FLOREAT (Film Lover Organised Relatively Easily Accessible Tournament) is available for mirrors. The mirror fee will be £5 ($6-7) per player.

There are eight packets of 20/20, with the following distribution:
5/3 Actors/actresses
3/1 Directors
2/3 Other aspects of production (composers, cinematographers, special effects etc.)
5/6 Films, with at least 1/0 on non-English language films
5/8 Miscellaneous (characters, locations, plot elements, assorted other things)

The tournament was originally written by and for Brits, and so, although the packets have been Americanized, there will be more British stuff than in the average film packet.
If anyone is interested in hosting mirrors, please email [email protected], and feel free to ask any questions about the tournament below.

I moderated at the UK site of this tournament and it was an awful lot of fun. The set is filled with a lot of great ideas and whimsy, so I strongly recommend people mirror it!

Is there a way to play the original British version?

I am willing to pay hundreds of dollars to make this happen. I can't go to Britain myself because I'm banned from the UK, though.

On a scale from 'entire tossups on obscure British comedians' to 'sensibly mid-Atlantic', how British do you want it?

Seconded. Personally, I love hearing all the uniquely British content. It's one of the things that makes sets like Oxford Open unique and one of the reasons why I like playing that set every year.

Seconded. Though admittedly, I would prefer it with some Americanization.

If anyone is willing to host a mirror around ICT, that would be great! If that isn't possible and there are no other mirror sites, I'd be happy to try to run some sort of Skype mirror if that would appeal to people.

My ICT team would be interested in this and I'd be down to staff, but I don't really know how to run a ICT side event.

Steps to a side event:

1. Get the packets.
2. Get a non negligible amount of promised staff.
3. Get rooms (at ICT, you're probably going to have to get people's hotel rooms, so this can get tricky).
4. Sign up teams in proportion to the number of staff and rooms you have.

I will say this might be too long for ICT weekend (unless you only did tossups); I'd be willing to try to spearhead a midwest mirror of this at some other time or location, perhaps in conjunction with some other trash-esque events.

I think this event seems better suited for a side event weekend type thing. Alternatively, I'd help read this over Skype if there is interest.

We played this as a shootout on the tossups only at the NYU site of OAT and it was a ton of fun. Thanks for writing such an excellent set.

Scores for our site were:
Max Smiley: 375
Harrison Whitaker: 365
Alec Vulfson: 200
Eric Mukherjee: 170
Sam Braunfeld: 150
Paul Lee: 70

As there are no more planned physical mirrors of this tournament, I'd like to run some sort of (free) mirror of this over Skype, probably on some Sunday in June. If people interested could fill out this poll (https://doodle.com/poll/tbrrf9aw5xhyif6t) with their preferences, I'll organise a running of this.

As a reminder, I'll be reading this at 6pm ET (just over six hours time) in the packet channel of the quizbowl discord (https://discord.gg/C3Cjk4N is a link to the main channel). I'll post the set on the packet archive soon afterwards.

Could you perhaps hold off on posting the set until a potential usage at Michigan's NASAT open? (I wanted to play this set but will be unavailable today)

Two things

1) Super pumped for this!

2) As someone who has never used Discord before, can you please make sure to post instructions? How to join the quiz bowl channel, how the buzzing works, etc? I've done Skype tourneys before, but I want to make sure I don't slow anyone down

Thanks!

It works pretty similar to Skype tournaments: follow the link and click on the #packet text channel at the side of the screen. I'll read the questions over the voice chat: type 'buzz' when you want to buzz, and then you have some time to type an answer.

EDIT: You need to join the 'packet reading' channel to hear the audio as well.

I tried e-mailing Francis about a mirror but haven't heard a response--can anyone else at Oxford get a hold of him? (or alternatively, anyone who has already mirrored this get a hold of me--I'm obviously willing to pay, I just need the packets for next weekend)

Yeah, this was great. Excellent answerline choices. My only quibbles is that I think there were too many actor tossups and a lot of them rewarded knowing the debut role of the performers.
