MVS Fall Kickoff 9/30/17 (IS-168 and MS-23)

Post by trbenedict »

The Miami Valley School quiz bowl team in Dayton, Ohio cordially invites you to the inaugural iteration of the MVS Fall Kickoff Tournament on September 30, 2017. We will run a high school division and a middle school division. The initial field cap for the high school division will be 18 teams and the initial field cap for the middle school division will be 12 teams. If there is sufficient interest, we will try to raise those caps, provided that we have enough moderators and we can secure enough space on our small campus.

QUESTION SETS & FORMAT:
The high school division will play NAQT’s IS-168 set and the middle school division will play NAQT's MS-23.

The top 15% of each division will qualify for NAQT’s all-school National Championship Tournaments (HSNCT and MSNCT). Additionally, the top 30% of small-school eligible teams will qualify for NAQT’s Small School National Championship Tournament (SSNCT). More info on those tournaments, including NAQT's definition of "small school," is available on NAQT’s website.

Teams will be grouped into initial brackets of six and play a round robin within their bracket. After lunch, we will re-bracket teams for afternoon rounds. During afternoon rounds, teams will be placed against other teams with similar records. Assuming a full field, all middle school teams will play at least eight games, while all high school teams will play at least ten games.

PAYMENT:
Payment can be made to The Miami Valley School (put "Quiz Bowl" in the memo). Our address is 5151 Denise Dr, Dayton, OH 45429. You may also bring cash or check to the tournament site.

Registration will be from 8:00 A.M. until 8:30 A.M., followed by a brief meeting for coaches and players. We expect to begin play promptly at 9:00 A.M.

FEES:
First Team: $55
Each Additional Team: $45
BUZZER DISCOUNT: -$5 per buzzer system, limit two per team that you are bringing.
READER DISCOUNT: -$10 for a competent moderator, limit two per team that you are bringing.
TRAVEL DISCOUNT: There is a $10 discount for teams traveling over 100 miles one way (our zip code is 45429).
MINIMUM Fee: $35

If your program has not played a pyramidal tossup-bonus quiz bowl tournament in the last three years, your team(s) will automatically qualify for the minimum fee of $35. Please ask if you have questions regarding this discount.

For lunch, we will offer cheese and pepperoni pizza for $10/pie. There is a dearth of convenient dining options around MVS, so please plan on staying on-site.

To register or for more information contact Tyler Benedict: tyler DOT benedict AT mvschool DOT com. We hope to see you in Dayton in September!

We are pleased to announce that PACE has named Miami Valley's Fall Kickoff Tournament a platinum qualifier for the 2018 PACE National Scholastic Championship! The top 25% of the high school field will qualify for the NSC, which will be held in the Washington, D.C. area on June 2-3.

We are now less than a month away from the MVS Fall Kickoff, and there are still spots to be filled in both divisions! Email me soon if you wish to register!

With the addition of Ben Logan HS to the field, we have reached our initial 18-team cap. However, we do have the space to raise the field cap for the high school division to 24 teams, provided we get enough interest for that nice even number. Registration will remain open for one more week, and any teams that sign up in that period will be added to our waitlist (currently comprised of 2 teams). If we get to six teams on the waitlist, I will add those six teams to the field and we will have reached our final field cap of 24.

Along with that, if any currently registered schools would like to bring a C team or beyond for the high school division, they can be added to the waitlist. Please let me know if you would like to bring a third team or beyond.

Beavercreek High School claimed the inaugural MVS FKT high school championship, defeating DCC A in both games of a disadvantaged final. In the middle school division, Miami Valley A and Oakwood finished a ten-team round robin with identical records of 8-1, and Miami Valley claimed the championship by winning an unadvantaged final.

Beavercreek, DCC A, and Miami Valley qualified for HSNCT as the top three teams in the HS division. Miami Valley A and Oakwood qualified for MSNCT. All of the above HS teams plus Copley A and DCC B should be NSC qualifiers. A list of SSNCT qualifiers will follow once NAQT verifies school status.

Full stats will follow, as will a full recap email. Feel free to post any feedback about how the tournament ran here, or send me and email or PM.
