Re: ROUND ONE, PART ONE: Best Song of the 2000s

Post by rylltraka »

So apparently by being here I've wandered into a dimension where people hate Coldplay, Green Day, and System of a Down. Bestill my breaking heart. It's too bad that they all reached their peak at a moment where they'd be ubiquitous and thus, targets, during your time. Or do people just hate rock/metal?

Crazy - Gnarls Barkley vs. Machine Gun - Portishead

I've never heard this "Crazy" song before - odd minimalistic soul backbeat and rhythm. Although it's not bad, I have no idea how this managed to become popular outside of R&B Oldies Radio, but the Portishead song was painful to listen to, so it clearly wins.

Wake Me Up When September Ends - Green Day vs. Beautiful - Christina Aguilera

Christina has a fine voice, and a fine message, but that's about all her song has - it's so earnest it seems like a self-esteem poem from a 13-year-old. The Green Day effort has a repetition issue, but carries a decent amount of emotional depth - although for me, having listened to American Idiot too much, it bleeds in my mind into "Whatshername". Which I don't mind.

SOS - Rihanna vs. Mr. Brightside - The Killers

This Rihanna song has way too busy of a backbeat; it's distracting, and her vocals are surprisingly understated, considering who's singing. The "Tainted Love" sample is limp and pointless. Surprised this was even a single! Mr. Brightside's the obvious pick.

Chop Suey! - System of a Down vs. Since U Been Gone - Kelly Clarkson

When Toxicity hit in 2001, it was such a breath of fresh air for the metal genre, which was mired in a nu-metal disaster I don't need to elaborate on. "Chop Suey!" was the clarion call, so perplexing, so measured, so vibrant, so nuts, so new that it took us all by surprise; it's not a Top # of the 90s, it's probably a top 50* metal song ever. "Since U [ugh] Been Gone" is a fine piece of disposable pop, so here's the point to dispose of it.

*Mik's 50 Top Metal Songs Ever coming eventually, in a post no one will read.

Jesus Walks - Kanye West vs. Clocks - Coldplay

Huh, I remember a slightly different version of Song #1. It's still really good, although not transcendent as I remember it. I would put it a notch about Coldplay here.

Wake Up - Arcade Fire vs. Danger! High Voltage - Electric Six

This Arcade Fire song seems kind of droning and weepy (the ending jam's nice, but too cutesy for my taste). But Electric Six is so immaterial (I do love Fire, but it's hardly a technical masterpiece) that it's hard to award it anything beyond a chuckle.

The Rat - The Walkmen vs. Toxic - Britney Spears

If I wanted to listen to people trying to sound like Joy Division, I'd listen to Joy Division. I turned this off after 90 seconds.

Get Ur Freak On - Missy Elliott vs. Chasing Pavements - Adele

This is a walkover; I didn't like "Chasing Pavements" the first time 'round.

Crazy - Gnarls Barkley vs. Machine Gun - Portishead

because duh. Easily the best pop song of the decade (and the lead single off of St. Elsewhere, a criminally underrated album).

Wake Me Up When September - Green Day vs. Beautiful - Christina Aguilera
Would've put "Holiday" or "Jesus of Suburbia" here instead but, hey, I'll vote for Cheesy Song A over Cheesy Song B in appreciation of American Idiot, the defining album of my pre-teen years.

SOS - Rihanna vs. Mr. Brightside - The Killers

It's a shame to see Rihanna knocked out this early. But "Mr. Brightside" is just too good.

Chop Suey! - System of a Down vs. Since U Been Gone - Kelly Clarkson

Jesus Walks - Kanye West vs. Clocks - Coldplay

Wake Up - Arcade Fire vs. Danger! High Voltage - Electric Six

I'll have you know, Mr. Naveed Chowdhury, that the best Arcade Fire songs are actually "No Cars Go" and "My Body is a Cage." Agree that this is one of the weaker songs on the album. Also agree that the backlash stems from the epidemic of "o-oh" wordless choruses - brought to you by those Lumineering Monsters of Men Who Are The Sons of Mumford - the success of "Wake Up" inspired.

The Rat - The Walkmen vs. Toxic - Britney Spears
"Toxic" is the best Britney Spears song, and "The Rat" is not the best Walkmen song (that's "We've Been Had," which kicks ass), but I'm surprised to see "Toxic" running away with this one.

Get Ur Freak On - Missy Elliott vs. Chasing Pavements - Adele

Jesus, Round 2 of this bracket is going to be a bloodbath.

Wake Up is at least top 3 on Funeral, come on. As for the other two, Crown of Love is severely underappreciated and Neighborhood 3...well I suppose it gets the appropriate amount of appreciation. Jesus Walks is great but All Falls Down is the better single sorry

Crazy - Gnarls Barkley vs. Machine Gun - Portishead. I'm surprised Machine Gun has gotten as many as two votes in this matchup.

Wake Me Up When September - Green Day vs. Beautiful - Christina Aguilera. I'll admit that Beautiful is kind of hokey, but it's so well done that it still manages to be uplifting. I still haven't worked out what exactly the appeal of Green Day is.

SOS - Rihanna vs. Mr. Brightside - The Killers. SOS is good, but it's so monotonous, it's hard to pay attention to or remember.

Chop Suey! - System of a Down vs. Since U Been Gone - Kelly Clarkson. The bridge of Since U Been Gone is such a great moment. If that makes me simple-minded, so be it.

Jesus Walks - Kanye West vs. Clocks - Coldplay. Don't have much to say about this other than that Clocks continues to make my eyes glaze over.

Wake Up - Arcade Fire vs. Danger! High Voltage - Electric Six. I think any song from Funeral would win here.

The Rat - The Walkmen vs. Toxic - Britney Spears. Both songs are good but not great, but I'll give Toxic the edge since it's so iconic, and The Rat is pretty unremarkable.

Get Ur Freak On - Missy Elliott vs. Chasing Pavements - Adele. Get Ur Freak On is probably going to win, and that's fine, but for me it's too much of a novelty rather than an actually good song.

99 Problems by Jay-Z vs. Helicopter by Bloc Party
If you haven't listened to the Grey Album version of "99 Problems", go do that now.

Hips Don't Lie by Shakira featuring Wyclef Jean vs. One Armed Scissor by At the Drive-In
iconic

No One Knows by Queens of the Stone Age vs. Supermassive Black Hole by Muse
I've had difficulty telling these two bands apart for forever. Still can't, but Muse is slightly catchier.

Paper Planes by M.I.A. vs. Not Ready to Make Nice by Dixie Chicks
Man, "Paper Planes" is still a really good song.

Ignition (Remix) by R. Kelly vs. Can't Get You Out of My Head by Kylie Minogue
Fun fact: R. Kelly went to high school at Kenwood Academy, mere minutes from the University of Chicago and across the street from prime Hyde Park eatery Uncle Joe's Jerk Chicken.

Untitled (How Does It Feel?) by D'Angelo vs. A-Punk by Vampire Weekend
These are both really good songs with great moods, so I'm giving it to D'Angelo for just lasting longer. Pity these two had to matchup in the first round.

I Will Posses Your Heart by Death Cab for Cutie vs. Chicago by Sufjan Stevens
I initially thought the Death Cab song here was "I Will Follow You Into The Dark" because I wasn't paying attention. That's a better song but still nowhere as good as "Chicago".

Last Nite by The Strokes vs. Slow Jamz by Twist featuring Kanye West and Jamie Foxx
I used "Last Nite" as my alarm song throughout high school and should, by all rights, be sick of it. That I'm not is a testament to just how good it is.

99 Problems by Jay-Z vs. Helicopter by Bloc Party. Maybe not Hov's best song, but it is up there and contains mostly pretty decent legal advice!

Hips Don't Lie by Shakira featuring Wyclef Jean vs. One Armed Scissor by At the Drive-In. Assuming y'all aren't tripping in what should be easy choices here this is gonna be a tough call next round. This song is a classic: fun, danceable, and infectious.

No One Knows by Queens of the Stone Age vs. Supermassive Black Hole by Muse. Don't love either but really just couldn't get on the Muse train when they were big

Paper Planes by M.I.A. vs. Not Ready to Make Nice by Dixie Chicks. MIA got old fast for me. Great, your Dad was a Tamil Tiger, good for him if you're about suicide bombings and assassinations. But can you make a single song that doesn't just day that over and over? Apparently yes, because she did once and it was great!

Ignition (Remix) by R. Kelly vs. Can't Get You Out of My Head by Kylie Minogue. I hope y'all signed the petition to make this the national anthem. If it was the anthem I guarantee nobody would be sitting down because they'll all be up dancing.

Untitled (How Does It Feel?) by D'Angelo vs. A-Punk by Vampire Weekend

I Will Posses Your Heart by Death Cab for Cutie vs. Chicago by Sufjan Stevens. I like both these songs and love Sufjan's body of work. But just looking at two songs, I've always enjoyed this one.

This is a close one, but Shakira's vocals put "Hips Don't Lie" over the top.

I've never really cared for QotSA. Like most of Muse's work, I like but don't love "Supermassive Black Hole."

Anyone who knows me knows there's no way I could vote otherwise. If you haven't heard the album version of I Will Possess Your Heart you're doing yourself a disservice; one of my favorite intros of all time. 99 Problems is gonna win by a huge margin anyway, just out here showing some love for Bloc Party

Hips Don't Lie by Shakira featuring Wyclef Jean vs. One Armed Scissor by At the Drive-In
Upon seeing this again I realize that 90% of my enjoyment of this song is Shakira's dancing. Still better than plain old screaming though.

No One Knows by Queens of the Stone Age vs. Supermassive Black Hole by Muse
I remember being blown away by how good No One Knows the first time I heard it. Muse is good, but they aren't that good.

Paper Planes by M.I.A. vs. Not Ready to Make Nice by Dixie Chicks

Ignition (Remix) by R. Kelly vs. Can't Get You Out of My Head by Kylie Minogue

This is a really tough first round matchup for Kylie.

Untitled (How Does It Feel?) by D'Angelo vs. A-Punk by Vampire Weekend
Never got into Vampire Weekend

I Will Possess Your Heart by Death Cab for Cutie vs. Chicago by Sufjan Stevens

Damn this is really really hard. Both of these songs are great, but only one of them doesn't have really creepy lyrics.

Last Nite by The Strokes vs. Slow Jamz by Twist featuring Kanye West and Jamie Foxx
I would've thought that Someday would've been the Strokes song to be chosen here, but I guess this has a more universal appeal. Young Kanye is adorable.

99 Problems by Jay-Z vs. Helicopter by Bloc Party
Both are solid songs, but I ultimately decided on 99 Problems because I got tired of all the indie rock in this sub-bracket (I realize this destroys my hipster cred, but living in Boulder and wearing exclusively flannel shirts should more than make up for it).

Hips Don't Lie by Shakira featuring Wyclef Jean vs. One Armed Scissor by At the Drive-In
Hips Don't Lie is ridiculously underseeded.

No One Knows by Queens of the Stone Age vs. Supermassive Black Hole by Muse
This was a hard one. Both songs are very repetitive, and as Ryan pointed out, they sound similar. However, I really like the bridge on No One Knows, which gave it the edge.

Paper Planes by M.I.A. vs. Not Ready to Make Nice by Dixie Chicks
Paper Planes is pretty much guaranteed to win at this point, so I might as well throw the Dixie Chicks some love. Normally I don't like country, but Not Ready to make Nice is catchy, well written, and serves as a scathing indictment of American jingoism during the Bush administration.

Ignition (Remix) by R. Kelly vs. Can't Get You Out of My Head by Kylie Minogue
Ignition is catchy as hell. Can't Get You Out of My Head, on the other hand, is just bland.

Untitled (How Does It Feel?) by D'Angelo vs. A-Punk by Vampire Weekend
Perhaps the sexiest song recorded since the death of Marvin Gaye.

I Will Posses Your Heart by Death Cab for Cutie vs. Chicago by Sufjan Stevens
I'm a sucker for a long instrumental intro.

Last Nite by The Strokes vs. Slow Jamz by Twist featuring Kanye West and Jamie Foxx
So far, I've voted for every Kanye song that's come up. Ironically, I don't particularly like Kanye. I've just slightly preferred his songs to their opponents.

"99 Problems" was on the Battlefield 3 soundtrack. "Helicopter" was on the FIFA 06 soundtrack. So, yeah, "Helicopter" wins.

No One Knows by Queens of the Stone Age vs. Supermassive Black Hole by Muse

Paper Planes by M.I.A. vs. Not Ready to Make Nice by Dixie Chicks - tough pick, but we'll go with the better song over the more culturally significant one

Ignition (Remix) by R. Kelly vs. Can't Get You Out of My Head by Kylie Minogue - rip Kylie :'(

Untitled (How Does It Feel?) by D'Angelo vs. A-Punk by Vampire Weekend

99 Problems by Jay-Z vs. Helicopter by Bloc Party

It was very debatable in my mind whether Bloc Party was a good song, but since the former definitely is, it's a walkover.

Hips Don't Lie by Shakira featuring Wyclef Jean vs. One Armed Scissor by At the Drive-In

On Song #1, Wyclef is rather annoying, although Shakira's odd half-yodeling melody is pretty great and quite different from a normal pop hook. Contrary to the lyrics, there's no way any woman would be hypnotized by Wyclef's atrocious Spanish. With the second, we're back to the GH days. The guitar hook's fine, but doesn't excuse repeating it ad infinitum. Plus, the verse is nothing to speak about. No punk[ish] song should be this long.

No One Knows by Queens of the Stone Age vs. Supermassive Black Hole by Muse
I don't love "No One Knows", but it's interesting and fresh. I think someone above put it very well, in that I too have liked, but never loved, the Muse that I have heard. Muse has never kicked enough ass. Plus, if you're going to name yourself after a god, you'd better deliver.

Paper Planes by M.I.A. vs. Not Ready to Make Nice by Dixie Chicks

Never heard the former. The unchanging timbre of her voice, unfortunately, gives me a headache. Oh, and it's the song where the chorus is "several gunshots"; that's a good message. It's also pretty repetitive. Somehow, the Dixie Chicks (which have only grown on me) have slipped through two rounds!

Ignition (Remix) by R. Kelly vs. Can't Get You Out of My Head by Kylie Minogue

"Ignition"'s appeal as a groove is pretty undeniable. I didn't vote for Minogue in the early runoff, so she bounces here.

Untitled (How Does It Feel?) by D'Angelo vs. A-Punk by Vampire Weekend

In general, I'm just not a fan of soul that's this slow (and conspicuously lacking a melody). It sounds like low-rent Prince. This Vampire Weekend stuff is quirky at least, and a bit catchy. Sure doesn't overstay its welcome, either.

I Will Possess Your Heart by Death Cab for Cutie vs. Chicago by Sufjan Stevens

I do like how deliberate this DCFC song is, although it's perhaps a little overdone. It's not as good once the lyrics start (the background music is a bit uninspiring), but not bad. "Chicago" - I don't know what to make of it. It's deliberately weird, and I can see how its Scandinavian pop influences affected indie music blueprints going forward. I didn't actively dislike it, but I don't get the hype.

Last Nite by The Strokes vs. Slow Jamz by Twist featuring Kanye West and Jamie Foxx

This Strokes song has some of the rawness of garage-era Alice Cooper (and quotes "American Girl"!). Both good things. "Slow Jamz" was mediocre to start.
