The Ballot:
Hey Ya! (a classic, though I was always a So Fresh, So Clean man myself)
The Funeral
Independent Women Pt. 1
Bad Romance (god, do I miss crazy Lady Gaga, meat dress and all)
Take Me Out
Dog Days are Over (I almost certainly expected to vote for The Roots here, given my love for hip-hop, but Dog Days (which I had not heard before) had an energy to it that Seed simply did not and that made it a much more enjoyable listening experience).
Lose Yourself

I'm saddened I was out of town for Christmas and missed the chance to give Supermassive Black Hole the respect it deserves. Anyway,

I missed the first few parts of the bracket because of the holidays, but there's mostly been wisdom in the crowds so far! I don't think my votes would have changed anything anyway, but I'm ready to jump in now:

Hey Ya! by Outkast vs. Blind by Hercules and Love Affair

Time to Pretend by MGMT vs. The Funeral by Band of Horses
The Funeral is one of about two songs by Band of Horses that I really like, but Time to Pretend is a fantastic song that got a super rough draw.

One More Time by Daft Punk vs. Independent Women Part 1 by Destiny's Child

Bad Romance by Lady Gaga vs. Do You Realize?? by The Flaming Lips
I tend to think Paparazzi is the best Gaga song of the 2000s, but Bad Romance is right there with it. Do You Realize?? is a fine song too but not as good.

Take Me Out by Franz Ferdinand vs. Stuck Between Stations by The Hold Steady
I was super into Franz Ferdinand 10 years ago, and it holds up pretty well.

The Seed (2.0) by The Roots featuring Cody Chestnutt vs. Dog Days Are Over by Florence + The Machine

All My Friends by LCD Soundsystem vs. Lose Yourself by Eminem
I had forgotten how much I like All My Friends but that's a good song.

Rehab by Amy Winehouse vs. The Fear by Lily Allen
I like The Fear because I like Lily Allen's sound in general, but I'm into the anti-consumerism theme too.

Hey Ya! by Outkast vs. Blind by Hercules and Love Affair

Time to Pretend by MGMT vs. The Funeral by Band of Horses
Wow, I've heard "The Funeral" hundreds of times without having the foggiest idea what it was called or it who it was by.

One More Time by Daft Punk vs. Independent Women Part 1 by Destiny's Child
Not my fav Daft Punk song but I am basically entirely indifferent to this Destiny's Child track.

Bad Romance by Lady Gaga vs. Do You Realize?? by The Flaming Lips
Wayne Coyne is extremely stupid and so are the lyrics he writes, but I still really like his music.

Take Me Out by Franz Ferdinand vs. Stuck Between Stations by The Hold Steady
Sparks only collaborated with one of these bands.

The Seed (2.0) by The Roots featuring Cody Chestnutt vs. Dog Days Are Over by Florence + The Machine

All My Friends by LCD Soundsystem vs. Lose Yourself by Eminem

Rehab by Amy Winehouse vs. The Fear by Lily Allen
My dad owns a painting of Amy Winehouse for some reason. This song is much better than that portrait.

Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes vs. Fidelity by Regina Spektor - very much not the best White Stripes song available (to be fair, also not the Regina Spektor song I would choose)

Maps by Yeah Yeahs Yeahs vs. Feel Good Inc. by Gorillaz - Maps rules, FGI is very good but I never quite understood the extreme degree of Gorillaz hype

Yeah! by Usher featuring Ludacris vs. Cry Me a River by Justin Timberlake - can't wait for this to lose next round

Idioteque by Radiohead vs. American Boy by Estelle featuring Kanye West - this can't possibly be why people like Radiohead, can it?

Fallin' by Alicia Keys vs. Dashboard by Modest Mouse - should've been any of like 4 different songs from Good News... but whatever

Hope There's Someone by Antony and the Johnsons vs. 1901 by Phoenix - still don't like Anohni's voice, especially the weird vibrato, and that song was particularly dull. The Phoenix song isn't the most amazing thing in the world but it's generally enjoyable to listen to!

Hurt by Johnny Cash vs. A Milli by Lil Wayne - duh.

Crazy In Love by Beyonce featuring Jay-Z vs. First Day Of My Life by Bright Eyes - sure

Fidelity
I’ll take Regina Spektor over the White Stripes any day of the week and twice on Shabbat. Plus, the guitar in Seven Nation Army is awfully annoying and sounds like a high school cover band.

Feel Good Inc.
Neither really did it for me, but this one didn't do it for me less

Yeah!
Duh!

American Boy
Catchy enough, and never been a huge Radiohead guy

Fallin’
Never found a way to get into Modest Mouse, plus Alicia Keys is delightful

Hope There’s Someone
Blind is a better cut from Anohni

Hurt
More duh

Crazy in Love
It's the quintessential pop hit, but I'll gladly vote for Hurt the next round

Extremely tough round, lots of close calls:

Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes vs. Fidelity by Regina Spektor - was really hoping for a song that was good so I didn't have to be seen voting for 7NA, which I shamefully find catchy, and I got it!

Maps by Yeah Yeahs Yeahs vs. Feel Good Inc. by Gorillaz - The toughest call of all. If you remove the element of nostalgia from the latter, I definitely enjoy Maps more, just such a solid song.

Yeah! by Usher featuring Ludacris vs. Cry Me a River by Justin Timberlake - good Justin

Idioteque by Radiohead vs. American Boy by Estelle featuring Kanye West - if only the boringest major Radiohead song from the 2000s wasn't chosen, this'd have been a different story. American Boy is so good.

Fallin' by Alicia Keys vs. Dashboard by Modest Mouse

Hope There's Someone by Antony and the Johnsons vs. 1901 by Phoenix - Hope There's Someone got really good at the eleventh hour but 1901 is a certified banger.

Hurt by Johnny Cash vs. A Milli by Lil Wayne - Didn't even have to listen to the latter song.

Crazy In Love by Beyonce featuring Jay-Z vs. First Day Of My Life by Bright Eyes

WTF?

Seriously? Dashboard? Okay, I guess...

Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes vs. Fidelity by Regina Spektor

I like The White Stripes, but sporting events had ruined "Seven Nation Army" for me a long time ago. It's also just not that good in the first place.

Maps by Yeah Yeahs Yeahs vs. Feel Good Inc. by Gorillaz

"Maps" is my favorite song in the bracket. I will be very sad if it loses. Don't make Dylan Minarik sad!

Yeah! by Usher featuring Ludacris vs. Cry Me a River by Justin Timberlake

"Yeah!" is probably also a 1 or 2 seed in my personal bracket- it's a crunk classic and shaped a bunch of what you heard on the radio from 2004-2007 or so. I like this JT song plenty, but a song off of FutureSex/Love Sounds would've put up more of a fight.

Idioteque by Radiohead vs. American Boy by Estelle featuring Kanye West

"Idioteque" is excellent, even if there are a lot of better tracks on Kid A. "American Boy" is good and all, I'm happy when it comes on the radio but don't really seek it out, so this isn't a hard choice.

Fallin' by Alicia Keys vs. Dashboard by Modest Mouse

Alicia Keys' best song wins out pretty easily over a song I never really got into.

Hope There's Someone by Antony and the Johnsons vs. 1901 by Phoenix

"Hope There's Someone" was new to me. I would probably hate it weren't for Anohni's voice, which is really neat. "1901" isn't anything special compared to other indie rock songs from the same time period but it's really catchy, and a song I listened to a bunch when I first had my car, so it has a place in my heart.

Hurt by Johnny Cash vs. A Milli by Lil Wayne

Is this the best cover ever?

Crazy In Love by Beyonce featuring Jay-Z vs. First Day Of My Life by Bright Eyes

Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes vs. Fidelity by Regina Spektor

I've never been a fan of anything Jack White, though he would still beat plenty of the non-Regina Spektor songs in this tournament.

Maps by Yeah Yeahs Yeahs vs. Feel Good Inc. by Gorillaz

One of my favorite songs of the tournament up against one that I don't like but would have expected to have a higher seed.

Yeah! by Usher featuring Ludacris vs. Cry Me a River by Justin Timberlake

Idioteque by Radiohead vs. American Boy by Estelle featuring Kanye West

I know that it is a cop out to call Idioteque Radiohead's best song, but as someone who generally doesn't like them it really is my favorite and probably one of my top 5 tracks from the entire decade.

Fallin' by Alicia Keys vs. Dashboard by Modest Mouse

Close call, but picking a so-so Modest Mouse song does not help them here.

Hope There's Someone by Antony and the Johnsons vs. 1901 by Phoenix

I had never heard that first song before, but it's awful.

Hurt by Johnny Cash vs. A Milli by Lil Wayne

Crazy In Love by Beyonce featuring Jay-Z vs. First Day Of My Life by Bright Eyes

Another tough call, though I am pretty indifferent to both tracks here.

Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes vs. Fidelity by Regina Spektor. I'm tired of Seven Nation Army and sad that this bracket made me think about it.

Maps by Yeah Yeahs Yeahs vs. Feel Good Inc. by Gorillaz. I love the image in the Feel Good Inc video of riding a windmill through the clouds, because it's exactly what listening to the song feels like. I've never understood what makes Maps anything more than a decent run-of-the-mill indie rock song.

Yeah! by Usher featuring Ludacris vs. Cry Me a River by Justin Timberlake. Man. Both of these are awful. Two of the worst synth motifs of all time.

Idioteque by Radiohead vs. American Boy by Estelle featuring Kanye West. I've tried to like Radiohead, I really have, but I just can't stand Thom Yorke's whiny hipster-trance voice. American Boy is probably the best song in this group.

Fallin' by Alicia Keys vs. Dashboard by Modest Mouse

Hope There's Someone by Antony and the Johnsons vs. 1901 by Phoenix

Hurt by Johnny Cash vs. A Milli by Lil Wayne. A Milli is undoubtedly the most unpleasant song in the whole bracket.

Crazy In Love by Beyonce featuring Jay-Z vs. First Day Of My Life by Bright Eyes. First Day of My Life is good but just way, way, overmatched here.

I was not aware that it was cool to hate Seven Nation Army.

Maps by Yeah Yeahs Yeahs vs. Feel Good Inc. by Gorillaz
I never really got into Maps, so this is an easy choice.

Yeah! by Usher featuring Ludacris vs. Cry Me a River by Justin Timberlake
So, the music video for Cry Me a River is Justin Timberlake performing a home invasion? Why did people think this would be ok? Also Lil Jon screaming Yeah! is absolutely hilarious, which adds to an already very good song.

Idioteque by Radiohead vs. American Boy by Estelle featuring Kanye West
Never really listened to Radiohead and I'm just gonna chalk this one up to me being a simpleton again.

Fallin' by Alicia Keys vs. Dashboard by Modest Mouse
Do people not like Fallin'? What? This song should be blowing Modest Mouse out of the water.

Hope There's Someone by Antony and the Johnsons vs. 1901 by Phoenix
Two songs I'd never heard before and two that I didn't particularly get into. The winner here is probably going to lose in the next round anyway.

Hurt by Johnny Cash vs. A Milli by Lil Wayne
Yes Dylan, it is.

Crazy In Love by Beyonce featuring Jay-Z vs. First Day Of My Life by Bright Eyes
Crazy in Love is a deserving 2 seed.

Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes vs. Fidelity by Regina Spektor

Seven Nation Army remains simple, catchy, and effective. It's as overplayed as any song we're going to meet going forward, but its straightforward power is something I can't deny. I love Regina and her cutesy chanteuse-ism, but Fidelity just isn't as good a song - lovely as it is, I was waiting for it to end.

Maps by Yeah Yeahs Yeahs vs. Feel Good Inc. by Gorillaz

Man, I wish this song were literally about maps. I like the weird lo-fi prog aspects of this, but it's quite repetitive (and Rock Band had me play it about 2000 times). Also feel the guitar hook could be more effective. Feel Good, etc. just isn't as good as "Clint Eastwood" to me, although they have almost exactly the same elements - but it's not as catchy. Tough call.

Yeah! by Usher featuring Ludacris vs. Cry Me a River by Justin Timberlake

Oh, man, has anything aged worse than Lil' Jon (who, to be fair, was insufferable about five seconds after he arrived)? This is a fine, catchy song with a backbeat that was fairly novel at the time, and Ludacris is in fine shape here, but goddamn, Lil' Jon ruins the song for me. And I don't even like "Cry Me a River", which I somehow avoided actively listening to over the last 15 years.

Idioteque by Radiohead vs. American Boy by Estelle featuring Kanye West

Always good to be reminded why I'm not into Radiohead - to me this sounds like cacophonous, indecipherable nonsense. Not my thing.

Fallin' by Alicia Keys vs. Dashboard by Modest Mouse

Somehow "Fallin'" is only three minutes long, and still manages to be one of the most repetitive songs ever - I remember actively hating whenever it popped up on the radio. It really only has two elements, total, and really needs another verse. I kind of like this Modest Mouse song, which is all I needed to make a decision.

Hope There's Someone by Antony and the Johnsons vs. 1901 by Phoenix

Hooray, two songs I've never heard. Oh god, I hate the vocals for song #1 immediately - they're so affected. Who likes this weepy, treacly rubbish? Hey, it picks up three minutes in. Doesn't make it good. I don't actively hate song #2, which makes it a clear winner.

Hurt by Johnny Cash vs. A Milli by Lil Wayne

Okay, I needed to listen to about fifteen seconds of the second song to make a decision here. "I'm a venereal disease", as Mr. Wayne says, is indeed how his track sounds.

Crazy In Love by Beyonce featuring Jay-Z vs. First Day Of My Life by Bright Eyes

"Crazy in Love" is such a beautifully produced song that it's a bit of pop culture Gestalt. Lots of isolated individual pieces aren't that great, but together they work nicely. Song #2 sounds at the onset exactly like DCfC's "I will follow you into the dark", and it's okay as a bit of breathy navelgazing, but it's pretty insubstantial.

Seven Nation Army
Feel Good Inc.
Yeah! (Y'all better stop hating on Lil' Jon, it is not right)
American Boy
Fallin'
1901
Hurt (A Milli is a classic club banger, but Hurt is such a moving song I cannot in good conscience vote against it.)

There are several instances in this bracket where I like the song okay, but like other songs (from the 2000s) by the same artists more. I think it’ll make later rounds of voting tough, and even in this round I’m not super invested in some of my choices.

Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes vs. Fidelity by Regina Spektor. This is far from my favorite White Stripes song, and I'm tired of hearing at sporting events (especially when they're playing it at a road game for a team from Michigan - seriously, you're using a song by a band heavily identified with Detroit to pump up people against the Lions/Pistons?), but even a second tier White Stripes song is pretty good. I hope that it isn't a final four (or even sweet 16) representative in what is a really stacked bracket.

Maps by Yeah Yeahs Yeahs vs. Feel Good Inc. by Gorillaz. One of the toughest calls of the first round. Feel Good Inc. has a nice vibe and is a lot of fun, but Maps rises above the rest of early-2000s Indie Rock and was immortalized by Beyonce. If seeds hold this round, this will be one of my toughest choices next round.

Yeah! by Usher featuring Ludacris vs. Cry Me a River by Justin Timberlake. Yeah! is brutally underseeded. How many songs can still get the club as hyped 15 years after they came out as they did the first time people heard it? How many songs have an opening synth riff 10% as good as this one? How many songs have Lil' Jon giving some of the best ad libs of his career? Lil' Jon and Three 6 invented a new branch of Southern hip hop, and this song probably exposed more people outside of the South and hip hop culture to the sound than any other.

Idioteque by Radiohead vs. American Boy by Estelle featuring Kanye West. I'm surprised how many people here seem to hate Radiohead. I'm not one of them - there are plenty of Radiohead songs I really like, and a few I would vote for over American Boy. But American Boy's beat remains a classic and too much fun.

Fallin' by Alicia Keys vs. Dashboard by Modest Mouse

Hope There's Someone by Antony and the Johnsons vs. 1901 by Phoenix. I had never heard the first song before and was OK with that - it's terrible! 1901 is not a classic but it is 3 minutes of harmless fun.

Hurt by Johnny Cash vs. A Milli by Lil Wayne. The original version of Hurt is one of the few Nine Inch Nails songs that I enjoy, and this song is probably the biggest example of a cover better than the original. If you just look at Johnny Cash's "first" career, I think that he would be at a similar tier to Hank Williams or Willie Nelson among country singers. What puts him at the best of all time is the American series of recordings that he did at the end of his life with Rick Rubin - all four albums are full of stripped-down originals and covers, and I consider them to have the best work of his life. Hurt is the best song on them, and its video may be the best music video of all time.

Crazy In Love by Beyonce featuring Jay-Z vs. First Day Of My Life by Bright Eyes. This and Hurt are probably both among my 10 favorite songs ever, so I'm going to be pulling my hair out next round. Beyonce is the best pop star of her generation and that horn riff!

Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes vs. Fidelity by Regina Spektor - I had forgotten about "Fidelity" and actually enjoyed it a fair bit upon relistening, but not enough to push it over the edge.

Maps by Yeah Yeahs Yeahs vs. Feel Good Inc. by Gorillaz - Instantly recognized "Maps," which I don't think I ever knew the title of, but early teenage me had never seen an animated music video that wasn't played over poorly edited anime clips and I still love that kid playing guitar by the windmill.

Yeah! by Usher featuring Ludacris vs. Cry Me a River by Justin Timberlake - No contest. Something from FutureSex/Lovesounds might've made me pause to think.

Idioteque by Radiohead vs. American Boy by Estelle featuring Kanye West - Completely forgot how much I loved Estelle's voice. Also, I audibly laughed at "his suit bespoke", which went over my head in 2008.

Fallin' by Alicia Keys vs. Dashboard by Modest Mouse - Only sat through "Dashboard" for the video.

Hope There's Someone by Antony and the Johnsons vs. 1901 by Phoenix - Man, this thread is teaching me the names of a lot of songs.

Hurt by Johnny Cash vs. A Milli by Lil Wayne - I enjoy Lil Wayne sometimes, but, no.

Crazy In Love by Beyonce featuring Jay-Z vs. First Day Of My Life by Bright Eyes - In stark contrast to early solo JT, early solo Beyonce holds up sooo well. This jazzy cover from "The Great Gatsby" soundtrack is also fun.
