Hey everyone,

I wanted to apologize for the delays in getting out new rankings. I'm working on gathering data for the next set and hope it will be out in January.

I had originally intended for it to come out in the first week. Unfortunately, last Friday I broke a vertebra. Fortunately, it's a relatively minor injury that won't require major medical intervention. But, I hurt a lot and it's hard to do too much of anything for too long.

So: new rankings will be coming. It might be a week or two later than I originally expected, but they're coming.

In the meanwhile, I'm going to find out how to make Patreon not charge people for December and will do that ASAP. If I have to issue refunds, I'll do that.

Here's a complete list of all the tournaments that I currently have stats for. Please let me know if I'm missing any. (Be sure to use ctrl+F - I may not have the name in the expected format, so I suggest searching for the most unique word in the tournament name, or trying the school's host name rather than the actual tournament name in case of an error on my part)

I don't see the Hunter SCOP tournament from October, and I believe there are some PPB errors from KPAQT that are currently being hammered out.

Not that it matters much for this, but just to clarify for anyone else wondering - WHIT is Washington High School's tournament, not Washington University. The two schools are about 45 miles apart and are not affiliated with each other, other than regularly providing great staff for each other's tournaments. The similarity in name is only because the town and the university were both named for the same person.

You might have already accounted for this, but for Bronco Bowl, Westview's PPB stats are inaccurate on hsquizbowldb (showing a multiple of 5 for our bonus points). I can't speak for other teams, but the NAQT PPBs should be correct.

Pickerington North used Neg5 for stats. I have the link, but it might be not be suitable...teams only played five games, and there were bouncebacks on bonuses but there aren't any bounceback points listed here: https://stats.neg5.org/t/H1UG4L4zM/pick ... -standings

The set used was the Philly Cheesesteak.

I'm sure these are questions you get them all the time, so feel free to direct me somewhere where they've already been answered if you don't want to, but I have a couple:

1) What criteria do you use to rank sets?
2) What made you change some scores from your initial rankings that are on the website (i.e. SSNCT was dropped from just above 0 to just below)?

Thank you!

I'd been using estimates up to this point, since there was a lack of data to do my normal calculations (this is what I do every year).

I describe how I do the calculations here.

I'm not sure how much this will help you determine many adjustments, if any, since Issa Tournament was a novice tournament run on an A-set (which may be why you left it out) but it did happen and I don't think I saw it on the list.

The A set adjustment seems abnormally small, at least compared to previous years' adjustments.

Yes it does. I reckon it'll increase as the season goes on; I'll check my math before I use it in the next set of rankings, but even if it checks out, I'd fully expect any teams that are ranked highly because of an A-set performance to see themselves fall off the season goes on. Barring strong performances on other sets, of course.

I can't do math. I recalculated the A-set adjustment and came up with -3.60 this time. I'm pretty sure my mistake yesterday was that I had my Excel sheet to take the average of a column of data, but I had not expanded the range of cells far enough. I feel a lot more comfortable with this adjustment and will be using it moving forward.

Fun fact! You can apparently change Excel so it only calculates new values in cells when you tell it to, rather than automatically. This is very bad when you're relying on its automatic calculates to find means, standard deviations, and outliers. :(

It looks like the stats were posted on Neg5: https://stats.neg5.org/t/ByBP-tp6Z/acf- ... -standings. Your reported PPB of 21.15 there is consistent with your adjusted PPB of 23.14, though there's some sort of anomaly in the stats (280 points scored in round 9 on zero tossups answered) that's inflating that number.

Yeah, that's a problem, and I don't have the scoresheet to suggest the fix. All 280 points for us credited as bonus on 0 bonuses heard will certainly raise the PPB for a team that finished 5-5 in that tournament :)

I fixed the issue with St. Joseph of Indiana's stat. Thanks for your honesty and bringing it up to my attention, Ben.
