Kentucky NAQT State Championship, Lexington, KY (3/3/18)

Post by evanfyang »

The University of Kentucky Quiz Bowl Team is pleased to announce that it will be hosting the 2018 edition of the Kentucky NAQT State Championship, a state level high school quiz bowl tournament sponsored by the Kentucky Quiz Bowl Alliance (KQBA). Ramapriya Rangaraju will be serving as the tournament director for this event, with assistance from other members of KQBA and the UK Quiz Bowl Team.

The tournament will take place on our campus in Lexington, Kentucky on Saturday, March 3rd, 2018. The tournament will begin by 9:00 AM in the White Hall Classroom Building and we hope to conclude no later than 5:30 PM. Registration will take place from 8:00 AM to 8:45 AM in the same building.

This tournament will have a tentative cap of 24 teams, and therefore schools will be limited to registering their A and B teams until February 24. After that date, teams may register any additional teams. Depending on how many staffers are committed, the field size might increase with demand.

Games will be played in standard untimed NAQT format (two halves of 10 tossups each, bonuses as necessary, powers and negs in effect, and bonuses will not bounce back). Teams may consist of up to six players. Four players may play at a time for a team, and teams with less than four players are allowed. Once players are assigned to a team’s roster at the start of the tournament, those players cannot be moved between teams. The tournament itself will use a format similar to past NAQT state tournaments at Louisville and WKU, with round robin preliminary and playoff pools and teams expected to play approximately 9 or 10 games.

We will be using the Invitational Series #174 set provided by NAQT for this tournament. Teams that compete at Kentucky NAQT State Championship will be given the opportunity to qualify for the 2018 NAQT High School National Championship Tournament (HSNCT), which will be held at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis in Georgia from May 25–27. To qualify for HSNCT, a team must finish within the top 15% of the field at the State Championship.

Fee Structure:
  • $80 per team.
  • $10 discount per competent moderator provided (competent defined as somebody who can read one round of NAQT IS-set questions in 30 minutes or less).
  • $10 discount per working buzzer system.
  • There is a minimum fee of $40. Teams who have never played a pyramidal quiz bowl tournament automatically qualify for the minimum fee.
Checks should be made out to the Kentucky Quizbowl Alliance. Please note that this is distinct from "Kentucky Quizbowl," which is the quiz bowl team at the University of Kentucky. If you cannot procure a check actually addressed to KQBA, cash will be accepted as well.

You may register for the tournament here. If you have an NAQT account already, just log in and go through the registration process. If you do not have an account, it's a short process to create one. Remember to note how many buzzers and moderators you are bringing, so that we can provide correct invoices.

If you have any questions or concerns please email us at [email protected].

Hi everybody! A couple brief updates:

-Jason Thompson is replacing Ramapriya as TD, as the latter will be out of the state on March 3. Everything should operate as normally. We are also seeking volunteers for moderators and scorekeepers, so if you're in Kentucky and want to help out, PM or email me to let me know and I can pass along the info to the correct people.

-There are currently 9 teams registered for this tournament. The field cap is currently set at 24, so there's still plenty of space, but please register soon so we can start getting details confirmed ASAP!
