Words and Objects

Post by rahulkeyal »

I'm excited to announce Words and Objects, a side event written by myself, James Malouf, and Bruce Lou with assistance from Will Nediger to be played at summer opens and possibly high school nationals, along with an eventual online mirror. The set will consist of 6 packets of 20 Regs+ difficulty (although this is fairly variable) tossups following the distribution as below, with a (hopefully) fun twist: all answerlines will be an object or group of objects. With such a format, we hope to strike a balance between a fun, semi-vanity experience that will both engage newer and more experienced players, while still emphasizing academic content, exploring new material, and delving deeper into core content.

7 Literature:
  • 1 Long Fiction
  • 1 Poetry
  • 1 Drama
  • 1 Short Fiction
  • 3 Misc. / Other (criticism, history, non-fiction, more of the above including cross-genre common links)

7 Fine Arts:
  • 1 Painting
  • 1 Sculpture
  • 1 Film
  • 1 Performance (ballet, opera, etc.)
  • 3 Misc. / Other (architecture, photography, more of the above including cross-genre common links)
3 History:
  • 1 U.S / Euro
  • 1 World / Ancient
  • 1 Other (historiography, archaeology, more of the above)
1 Myth / Religion
1 Thought
1 Other

The cost will be $10 per player. Hosts interested in running the event, which will be available for use by the first weekend of June (6/2), can PM or email me if they are interested in mirroring it at their event. Despite the difficulty, I think strong high school players (and hopefully really anyone) should enjoy playing this, so please feel free to contact me about mirroring regardless the size / skill of your field.

I've updated the original post with the current confirmed sites, as well as the finalized number of packets (6). Please email me if you would like to mirror the event. I plan to also run an online mirror of the event, and will make a separate post regarding that in the coming week.

Rahul just read the questions at a UCSD practice—it was a great set, especially once you fully adopt the mental gymnastics mindset of the answer lines! I highly reccomend it!

Jason Cheng- 11/13/7 - 280

(Heard all 6 rounds)

Joining the bandwagon! This tournament was a lot of fun to play, especially if you like "figure it out"-type questions. A great set :)

Following a mirror at Valencia tomorrow evening, all scheduled mirrors for Words and Objects will have finished. I've heard word that there may be interest for a UK mirror, butI haven't received anything definitive thus far. I plan to publish the set to the archives if I haven't heard from anyone by Monday, August 27th.

I really enjoyed this set! Here are the individual stats from the Valencia mirror; we played five rounds (six teams) and then broke into two rooms to shoot out round six (no stats for that). Taylor and Leo won, with me and Jesse second, and then other people.

Taylor Harvey: 20/45/4 = 146ppg
Chris Borglum: 14/34/7 = 103
Seth Kendall: 9/19/3 = 62
Ian Mackenzie: 5/27/8 = 61
Jesse Gingold: 6/16/1 = 49
Donny (UCF): 2/18/5 = 33
Jonathen Settle: 1/17/8 = 29
James Meier: 0/13/7 = 19
Zach Foster: 3/7/6 = 17
Daniel Golisch: 2/6/2 = 16
Peter Torres: 0/7/1 = 13
Stan Young: 2/3/2 = 10
Alan Kreisel: 0/2/0 = 4
Leo Law: 0/1/0 = 2
