Historature at ICT

Post by naan/steak-holding toll »

This is a preliminary announcement for a mirror of Historature, a charity tournament, at the 2018 ICT. IPNCT players are more than welcome!

More information about the tournament can be found here. It is designed to be accessible to strong high school players (at least two-thirds of answerlines will be appropriate for PACE NSC / HSNCT) but is targeted at WAO difficulty (regular-plus), so it should be playable by both Division I and Division II audiences.

The entry fee will be a flat $15 per player. Please don't make your teams too overpowered - I'd like to see a few different teams that have a reasonable shot at winning the tournament. The tournament will be using ICT game rooms.

With SCT on the horizon, and my writing efforts freed up after Regionals, I figured I would bump this thread and confirm this will indeed be happening.

I'd like to play this, and am looking for teammates.

EDIT: I'm playing with Jason Zhou, Nathan Weiser, and Andrew Hart.

Hey folks - it's awesome to see so many sign-ups! Keep them coming.

There are a few things we will need to make this run smoothly:
1) Rooms. If your team is okay with volunteering its room, or you are a staffer and all people in your room are okay with it being used as a game room, please indicate as such on the sign-up sheet in the column that's just been added.
2) Volunteers. We will probably need a few more volunteers to make this run smoothly. If you'd be interested in doing so, please put your name in the "Staff" column.
3) Buzzers. If your team is okay donating its buzzers for this, that would also be awesome. Please note that in the appropriate column as well (put your team's name and number of buzzers)

EDIT: Also, if you're going to the IPNCT, you are more than welcome to play this event!

Would anyone be interested in putting together a collective food order of some sort? I would like this to begin by 8PM so that we can finish by midnight or so. There will be ten packets, with 24 tossup questions and zero bonuses per packet, and I'd like to give people a chance to play as many of tnese as possible.

Also, for this tournament, you MUST pay me electronically, or in cash, before the tournament begins. I'll provide my Venmo and Paypal information as the tournament approaches.

When you say "pay in cash before the tournament begins," do you mean before that weekend, or if as we register/check-in, we give you the money?

Also, I still need a team, but I don't know how accurate the spreadsheet is anymore, so if you need a teammate(s), let me know. I have seen all of the first season of Pokemon if that helps.

Both are acceptable - just make sure the money's in before you start Round 1. I'll keep track of who has paid using the spreadsheet. If anyone has an exceptional circumstance, please contact me about it so we can arrange your payment.

Is there a reason for starting so late? I'm probably misremembering to some degree, but I thought post-ICT side events in the past started sooner.

As Mike said, I'm anticipating the ICT to run later due to the field expansion. I'll adjust depending on what schedule information comes, but I'd like to give teams some time to get food.

Since this tournament is two weeks away, I'd like to start making preliminary plans.

I think eighteen teams would be a good number to ensure this. With such numbers, I think there are two solid formats available with this number:

Option A: Prelim groups of 9 teams each. The top two teams from each prelim group will face each other in a final. If their records are different, the team with a higher record has an advantage. If two teams in a given bracket are tied for record, they will play a single game play-in to the final which will then be a single game, no matter the records of the participants.

Option B: Prelim groups of 6 teams each. Teams will be ranked 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 after prelims and sorted into top, middle, and bottom brackets, then play the four teams in their playoff brackets that they haven't played already. If we choose this format there are two teams with, say, X-2 records and one team with an X-1 record at the end of the playoffs, then the top ranked team is declared the winner automatically. Each team is guaranteed nine games.

Which of these would be preferable?

EDIT: It may be realistic for us to just aim for 16 teams. In that case, we would run two prelim brackets of 8, break teams into tiers of two (1,2 - 3,4 - 5,6 - 7,8) and have them play two crossover games. One packet would be left for a final if two teams are tied for best record.

NAQT has graciously allowed us to use ICT / IPNCT game rooms for this event. We still need buzzers, though. If we can use your team's buzzer, please indicate so on the signup sheet!

Based on NAQT's publicly posted schedule and the fact that we will have game rooms available, I'm going to say for now that this tournament will start at 8:30 PM. If there is a multi-stage final, then it will start at 9:00 PM instead.

Please make dinner plans accordingly.

Sincere thanks to everyone who played yesterday

I offer my deepest apologies for the poor logistics and my frantic and irked manner and accept full responsibility for the flaws. I do hope there is some understanding regarding the circumstances and the set was enjoyable regardless of this.
