Hey I'd just like to clarify that while we're from the same school district, there are two separate Downingtown schools that regularly play quizbowl (East and STEM). I think you probably meant Downingtown STEM in the poll since they'll be much more dominant than us this year, so it might be useful to specify that.

Isn't it pretty much just LVS v. Hunter at this point?

I did in fact mean Downington STEM, as I was unsure if they were the same or different or which one was which. I can't edit the poll now, so just be aware that it is in fact Downington STEM.

Hey guys, Haggai here! I miss the HS Quizbowl circuit, but life goes on. I'm starting a quizbowl club, and came here to see how interested people would be if I hosted a tournament here at Stony Brook University. If so, it probably would be run in the spring. Let me know. I Hope y'all are having a great quizbowl season so far!

Hey, Haggai! Depending on if the date or set conflicts with anything else, there's a definitive chance we'd be down. Miss you around the circuit!

This seems like as good a place as any to post this. I'm currently living in Philadelphia, and over the past couple of years I have acquired several buzzer sets (5 or 6, I think). I still need to test them and see if they all still work. But if teams in the greater Philly area need to borrow a couple of sets for a tournament (or even for practice), I'd be happy to lend them. Just contact me and if I can help, we'll chat about how.

Hunter is probably a clear favorite in the area, and I don't forsee that changing too much. After that, I think that Lehigh, High Tech, and Downingtown are of fairly similar strengths (though I haven't seen Alex play in a while, I expect he's as good a player as ever).

We've lost to Hunter with Luke and without... with you and without Luke... without either of you. So, yeah, you are the clear favorites!

As much as I'd like to beat you guys, Daniel, I am glad to hear that you're back and feeling better.

Seems like we're all signed up for Livingston, so it'll be fun to see what develops there! (Fwiw, I think we'll have a harder time against Lehigh/LVA/High Tech on NAQT, though)

I know how my own team is doing...I was wondering about the rest of the region (since I haven't played many of you so far).
I suppose I can try to do a more New York-centric ranking...
Of course, as everyone has said, High Tech is doing great.
Bard is very good, based on my experiences with them at Columbia Spring and from watching them a few times before that; Max is a really, really good individual, and this team has been a great surprise in the field this year. Darien is also doing quite well, with Julia and John leading the way to some good finishes (sorry I don't know more). GNS is perhaps a half tier below the aforementioned teams, but they played great at NHBB; Andersen and Noah are very good in their respective categories, and it's only a matter of time before they broaden their coverage.

I quite honestly don't know much about anyone else, and I apologize in advance for having overlooked teams (as I said, I really have been out of it this year thus far, and I'm making my comeback now).

Some people in the Massachusetts discussion thread are talking about potential Nats results for the teams in their region. I have absolutely no qualifications to lead a similar discussion about this region, but I was wondering what some of ya'll think.

Same here- as I said in the other thread, while I don't feel qualified to write up a report of teams in detail (I'll definitely overlook some), I can definitely add details about teams and Darien specifically if people would like to hear. I'll start with something vague about Darien: we have a very young team (mostly freshmen and sophomores), and we've not really fielded a true A team at any tournament yet (given I'm not entirely sure what our "full A" is yet)- nonetheless we've put up decent results (consistent top bracket at tourneys despite our PPB and powers being on the lower side). I think I'm a decent lit player (certainly a better generalist than I was at the beginning of the year), John Phipps and Alex DelVecchio can challenge each other at history, and we've got some science coverage in Riya Krishnan, Evan Tong, Nick Liu, and Daniel Pfrommer.

I guess I'll attempt to make a post about a few teams I've played at least twice in this area. It's not specifically a post of predictions for nats or for next year, but is just a random collection of thoughts on the teams.

Hunter: Definitely the strongest team in the Northeast right now. I can confidently say that Chloe is the best lit player here, and Daniel is a great generalist who, to my knowledge, can cover both history and science. Of course, they continue to be a monster in NAQT tournaments, with Sam as a great trash/geo(?) player. Aside from them, Brian and Gilad are strong history and fine arts players, respectively. They may be without a specific science specialist right now, but they're still the top contender for a national title around this area.

Bard: Bard is the newest team here, but has also been full of surprises for me. Although I admit I didn't think too much of them when I first met them reading at SCOP Novice, I've come to realize that Max is a great player who has improved an incredible amount to become one of the best individual players in the circuit. I've played Bard I think three times this year, and they have beat us two of those three times (I didn't attend Livingston). I see Bard doing very well and Max being one of the top scorers in nats.

Great Neck South (West Egg): West Egg has suffered through the losses of Allen and Lucia, but Anderson and Noah continue to excel at their categories. We've had much troubles against them in the past, and they're a strong team, but they lack strength/consistency in some essential areas which keeps them out of the top tier of teams.

High Tech: We still have Doug, who is undoubtedly one of the strongest history players in the country. Meanwhile, Darren is improving at a good pace at literature, and Steven is rapidly expanding his science knowledge. Steven also fills wonderfully for Doug's few history and geography holes and is pretty damn good at CE. Although I confined myself to music in the past, I've been studying art and RMP very hard, and will continue to do so into next year. Also, in the background lurks a freshman (Deepak!) who, we all predict, could become one of the best history and geography players in the country.

Princeton: After losing to them in NJ states and watching Montagu and Aditya play in NASAT tryouts, I must admit their strength. Monty is a very strong history and fine arts player, a music player in the area I truly fear. Aditya seemed to be a solid science player in the tryouts, but that was my only experience with him in quizbowl—I guess I'll have to wait and see.

Millburn: Dean was the top scorer in NJ States, and having played against him in both the tournament and in tryouts, I affirm that it was no fluke. Dean is strong in history, literature, and visual arts, and single-handedly makes Millburn one of New Jersey's top teams.

Lehigh Valley: As always, Alex is one of the strongest players and single-handedly makes Lehigh Valley among the scariest teams in the circuit. Alex has been improving every year, and I won't be surprised if he is top scorer or can pull off a high finish at nats.

Downingtown STEM: DSTEM were virtually unknown to me last year, but suddenly became a top-tier team with a top-tier captain. In this year I've read for them twice and played them a few times, and every time I marvel at Vishwa's powers. Unfortunately, with those powers comes a lot of negs, and with those negs and without a strong history player, DSTEM can't break into the top top level. Vishwa's science and lit and Rohan's fine arts still make a very formidable duo, though, so watch out for them.

Darien: Julia continues to be one of the best lit players, and John continues to be a strong history and geography player. They have solid coverage over the humanities, but don't seem to have a strong science player to back them up. Still, I always fear playing them, and with a good science player, they would be very very scary.

Wilmington Charter: I've only played them a few times, but Waley and Sohum are very strong players, beating us at Columbia once. They're a good team, although I'm not entirely sure which categories the each of them plays.

Re: NY/NJ/PA/CT/Surrounding Area Discussion '17/'18

Post by Tippy Martinez »

As promised, here’s some predictions on most of the PA teams attending Nats. Please understand that these are just my thoughts and interpretations and I certainly don’t have a perfect knowledge of every team.

HSNCT:

Alagar Homeschool: The Alagars maintain an entire squad that made playoffs last year at 6-4, so another playoff run is almost certain for them. The only problem that we have seen with the Alagars is their infrequent playing. They haven’t played a tournament since the fall, but this problem last year didn't hold them back very much. Jaya and Rajan are both quality players and they’ll do well.

Prediction: 7-3

Allderdice: Allderdice have kind have burst on the circuit this year and have made rapid improvements. Jaime and Jakobi have both put up great numbers on IS and A sets so far and their bonus conversion numbers have been very consistent. My two worries with Dice are that they have not played too many sets above IS difficulty, but with what seems to be very good NAQT-y knowledge they should be able to scale up to HSNCT pretty well. Another concern may be the inconsistency of their lineup, but I don’t think that’ll detract too much from their performance.

Prediction: 7-3

Downingtown East: D-East was statistically one of the best 5-5 teams last year but graduated half of its A team and some pretty solid science knowledge from Kaushik. They seem to scale quite well (great EFT stats), Jackie has great generalist knowledge, and Zach and Malaika seem to be improving and chipping in more and more. I’m not sure what to predict really, so I’m going to lean lower to be safe.

Prediction: 5-5

Downingtown STEM: This team could do some real damage. Vishwa has emerged as an outstanding science and lit player and is dangerous in some other categories as well. Anish provides deep geo and history knowledge, and Rohan has been rapidly improving in fine arts. STEM has amazing power counts and good bonus conversion, amd has been able to fix up their weakness on the NAQT distro. These three alone could make a deep playoff run and they will do quite, quite well.

Prediction: 8-2

Emmaus: Emmaus have put up some pretty consistent performances at the tournaments they’ve played this year and can certainly win some games. I doubt a playoff push is in sight, but Emmaus could certainly put in a good performance.

Prediction: 4-6

Friends Select A: FSS retain a majority of their scoring from a 5-5 performance last year, in which they were also missing their captain Jake. FSS have put up great numbers this year, and also proved they can handle higher difficulties on sets such as EFT. Richard is probably the second best science player in the state after Vishwa, and Rudyard has insane real history knowledge. FSS has proved they can be prone to neg streaks and have a bit of a weakness in lit, but I’m confident this FSS team will do well.

Prediction: 7-3

Friends Select B: FSS B have put in solid performances this year, making playoffs at GVQBT and claiming second at the Philly City championships. They’ve played a good amount this year and I think that’ll exposure will do them well at HSNCT. For what seems to be a fairly young team they are quite impressive and will make sure FSS can continue to compete after this year.

Prediction: 4-6

Great Valley A: Great Valley also keeps most of their scoring from a good performance last year, where they went 6-4. The dominating narrative that plagued GV was last year was their negs, but they seem to have largely cut down on that. Sam has great history knowledge, Dan gets some great science buzzes and Mark chips in a lot with a decent power rate and good trash knowledge. Along with Chris who provides great support too, this GV team is balanced and can do some serious work at HSNCT.

Prediction: 7-3

Great Valley B: Most of my points for GV B would be the same ones I made for FSS B. Young team, played lots his year, and will be solid at HSNCT. GV teams have an affinity for nipping close games, so I’ll predict them to do pretty well.

Prediction: 4-6

Henderson A: Henderson have put in some good performances this year and return an entire lineup that went 5-5 last year. Vijay is a great player and Aravind has emerged as a great player as well this year. I think playoffs are plausible but a deep run not as much.

Prediction: 6-4

Henderson B: Henderson doesn;t seem to be too deep, and this berth was attained by a team splitting instance so it wasn’t too representative of their actual squad. Regardless of this, Hendy is an established program and can surely pick up some wins.

Prediction: 3-7

Indiana: Indiana have played a good amount of tournaments and return most of their scoring from a 4-6 run last year. Vince, their top scorer, is also playing IPNCT and should get some good exposure there. I’ll predict them to replicate their performance from last year.

Prediction: 4-6

Lancaster Mennonite: Lancaster Mennonite certainly aren’t the team they were last year when they had Brandon Roe, but they certainly haven’t fallen apart either. They are pretty consistent but I’m not sure how well they scale, but they should be able to win some games.

Prediction: 3-7

Lehigh Valley: Alex is one of the best players in the country, and when he’s really focused he can beat almost any team. He had a great run at HSNCT last year and there’s no reason he can’t do it again. I’m sure he’s also a big contender for NHBB titles as well. Hopefully he can push on and get PA one of it’s best HSNCT finishes in a long time.

Prediction: 8-2

Manheim Township A: MT graduated most of their scoring through Shayar and Ahan last year. They’ve been able to rebuild in an amazing way though, and have a very balanced squad this year. Dan provides great science knowledge, Bryce has become quite an impressive lit and FA player, and Michael has some good knowledge in RMP. They’ve put up consistent bonus conversion stats as well as power count and this team will do very well at Nats.

Prediction: 7-3

Manheim Township B: MT B fall in to the same type of archetype as FSS B and GV B. I’m not sure exactly who will play on this team but MT has amazing depth so this squad will certainly perform well.

Prediction: 4-6

Penn Manor: My team, so I’ll try to talk about us in an objective way. We are going to out first HSNCT but we’ve been pretty active on the circuit. We’ve put up pretty consistent and decent-ish PPBs but have a real low power rate. We also have a big science weakness, but tend to fare decently well on NAQT sets (pretty good geo, trash and CE knowledge). I’m obviously hoping to make a playoff push but I’ll predict us to do the same as the other teams in our skill range.

Prediction: 4-6

Shady Side: I initially didn’t know much about Shady Side before I researched for this post but they’ve put up some solid stats. Hard to make a prediction just solely based on that but I think with the numbers they've shown they can win some games.

Prediction: 4-6

State College A: This team hasn’t played all that much this season, but the tournaments they have played have been impressive. Lily provides lots of scoring and thy have a deep bench behind her. They have very similar stats to teams I’ve mentioned before (FSS, GV, Dice, MT), so I’m going to predict them to do the same.

Prediction: 7-3

State College B: Another one of the schools that has great depth and a very solid B team. Again, don’t know completely what this lineup will be but SC has a wealth of players who can contribute well and win games at this level.

Prediction: 4-6

Wallenpaupack: Graduated a bunch of scoring this year. Haven’t played with a super consistent lineup. Good program though, and some HSNCT experience, so they’ll win some games.

Prediction: 3-7

Teams that I don’t know too much about/don’t have much data for that are attending HSNCT:

Jim Thorpe
Armstrong
Northwest Penn Collegiate

SSNCT:

Some teams to look out for in the Public Division: Camp Hill, Huntingdon, and Lakeland. I think these teams could all make decent playoff runs and possibly pull some upsets.

In the Open Division, I predict Friends Select to have a great run. They are a quality squad and could definitely be alive deep into Sunday. Winchester Thurston, although not the same team from last year, are still very good and could make a decent playoff run as well.

NSC:

NSC really favors STEM, who are really strong on housewrites. I think they could be a potential second bracket team. LVA are certainly better on the NAQT distro but Alex has proved he’s quite quality on standard housewrite distros as well.. They are a second bracket team in my opinion as wel. In terms of other teams going, MT A and B are both attending, and I think the former are definitely a top 48 team. In addition, Delaware Valley, a team who went 6-4 last year at HSNCT with the same lineup. I predict they’ll be a top 48 team too.

Overall, this year’s PA squads are very quality, and hopefully we can show that our state is rapidly improving on their nationals scale. Good luck to all the PA teams/players and any other teams attending SSNCT, HSNCT, IPNCT, NHBB, and NSC later this year!

Quick note: We do have a very good science player (Abishrant, who hasn't graduated yet) and he will be coming to HSNCT.
