To my knowledge, MA hasn't fielded a team for NASAT in a long time, but is there any interest around here/anyone potentially interested in putting a tryout together?

Re: MA NASAT 2018?
Pretty sure funding has always been the main hurdle for Massachusetts NASAT (also our relative lack of skill compared to some of the big quizbowl states)
Am interested in somehow fielding a team for MA, even though I probably won't be on this year's iteration of the team, and I'm definitely interested in raising funds for 2019, when I'll be a junior in high school.
As for selection, honestly I feel like we're a small enough circuit that we could probably figure out the top 4 players through some sort of nomination process, although I'm also down for a day of individual tossup shootouts with y'all.

Re: MA NASAT 2018?
Agreed. I certainly don't think I'm good enough to make the team, and in addition to the funding issue, there is also the issue of NASAT taking place before MA public schools break for summer (and, in most cases, right before finals). However, I think that, provided that there is enough interest, the possibility of cobbling together a MA NASAT team (whether it be this year or in the future) merits some consideration – it could help grow the MA circuit on both the local and national levels, which would be great to see.Ozymandias314 wrote:Pretty sure funding has always been the main hurdle for Massachusetts NASAT (also our relative lack of skill compared to some of the big quizbowl states)

Re: MA NASAT 2018?
I would love for a MA NASAT team to happen, and I know that Sky Li would probably also be down to attend (if either of us are selected). If more schools show interest (Andover, Lex, etc.), then I am definitely interested in participating on the team or helping with the selection process.

Re: MA NASAT 2018?
I was on the team in 2014, the only time we did put together a Massachusetts team, and I will say that funding and the fact that the tournament happens right around finals for most MA schools were definitely issues then, too. Flights to Fake Lexington are pretty expensive since it's not a very large airport, so I think the best hope for a MA NASAT team happening again is getting some motivated seniors road tripping to Kentucky to play quizbowl.
That being said, I'd love to see another MA NASAT team actually happen and hopefully do better than the one I was on did. We had a tryout process last time after a tournament (HSAPQ States, when that was still a thing), splitting MUT tossups into five categories (lit, history, science, arts, RMP) and doing separate tryouts on each subject, one after the other so people could participate in multiple. The team we ended up with definitely isn't what would've been selected through a nomination process and ended up choosing specialists with more deep knowledge who may not have been chosen otherwise. However, I wouldn't be opposed to a nomination process happening, either, as long as whoever's doing the nominating takes deep knowledge and creating a balanced team into account and not just picking the state's four best generalists.

Has anyone heard anything about a team coming together for Massachusetts?
