Gauging Interest: Fantasy Quizbowl 2018-2019

Post by The King's Flight to the Scots »

Hey all,

I would like to bring back fantasy quizbowl for the upcoming season. It would work pretty similarly to its 2014 incarnation, with some scoring changes suggested by Cody and Max Schindler that will be announced later. For now, please post if this is something you would be interested in! Apologies for the late notice, I still think we should be able to get this moving before EFT if people are interested.

21 people have posted or messaged me with interest here - if you could form into 10 teams, which is what we had last time, so that we can have a draft before next Saturday, that would be great. Thanks all!

Hi everyone,

I've set up a doodle poll for you to indicate when you can make a draft sometime during a weeknight next week. Please fill it out here. I will select the time that ensures we have at least 1 representative from as many teams as possible.

Here's the scoring breakdown, courtesy of Cody Voight:

Individual Scoring
  • Prelim Points Per Game: 100 points, scaled by the highest Prelim PPG in the league. 100 * (PPG / Highest PPG)
  • Prelim Win-Loss Percentage: 40 points, scaled by the maximum Prelim W-L% in the league. [40][50] * (W-L% / Highest W-L%)
  • Final Placement: 40 points, scaled according to the number of teams in the field. [40][50] * (1 - (Placement / #Teams in the Field))
  • Whimsy Factor: 20 points, calculated as 20 * (Negs Per Game / Highest Negs Per Game) * (Powers Per Game / Highest Powers Per Game) (note: gets are used in lieu of powers for sets without powers)
  • +10 points per neg on tossup 20 that turns a guaranteed win into a tie-able situation (self-reported)
Team Scoring
  • Points Per Bonus: 200 points, scaled by the highest PPB in the league. (PPB - 10) / (Highest PPB - 10)
  • Whimsy Factor: capped at 100 points, calculated as (Most Negs in a Win)^2 * (PPG / (PPG - PAPG)) (note: the factor PPG / (PPG - PAPG) is capped at 3)

The time with the most selections on the poll is tomorrow, September 18, at 10:00 PM Central Time. Unless I hear otherwise, plan on the draft being at that time. I will not draft without a quorum of teams, and will consider kicking the draft back to next week if enough people cannot make it so short notice.

Forgive me if I missed this detail, but how will the draft be held? Will it be like a snake draft as in fantasy football or what? Is the draft on Discord or IRC?

Thanks!

This is the post with the draft rules last time Fantasy Quizbowl was run. Whether these draft rules will be used this go-round, I don't know. viewtopic.php?f=22&t=14766

I believe we did a snake seed draft in 2013-14, which is probably the best bet if you don't want the draft to last for hours.

I've camped out in #fantasyqbdraft on slashNET, where the draft will begin in approximately 30 minutes. Free agents will be added to teams at some point in the future. The official draft board, order included, is is here. We will be drafting snake-style with the same regional rules as the previous edition of Fantasy Quizbowl. I will announce procedural things in the IRC once people start to trickle in.
