Bay Area HS Novice Tournament @ St. Francis (Sept 22)

Post by njsbling »

The Saint Francis High School Quiz Bowl club will be hosting a novice quiz bowl tournament on Saturday, September 22, 2018 at Saint Francis HS in Mountain View. The tournament will be run in order to provide an introduction to quiz bowl without any prior experience necessary and to demonstrate what a truly fun activity quiz bowl is! We highly encourage teams from around NorCal to come.

The possibility of an East Bay site is pending. Teams that would play at an East Bay site are encouraged to register for the Saint Francis tournament for now.

The tournament set will be National Academic Quiz Tournaments’ (NAQT) Invitational Series 178-A, which is aimed at teams with little to no experience. Teams will be restricted to at most 6 players, with 4 players playing at any given time and 2 on the bench. Please be aware that the majority of teams will be teams with new players.

Practice questions of approximate difficulty can be found here => http://www.hsquizbowl.org/db/questionse ... archived=y

All teams of high schoolers from the same school are eligible to play in this event, although players who have competed at the NAQT High School National Championship Tournament, the PACE National Scholastic Championship, or finished t-13 or better at any NAQT Middle School National Championship Tournament must receive special permission to play from Nicholas Karas ([email protected]).

This competition features a separate division for middle school teams using IS-178A; middle school players cannot compete in the HS division (whether on a team with other middle school players or on a team with high school players). Middle school players may compete in the MS division without restriction (and do not need to receive permission).

Tournament Logistics: The tournament will take place at St. Francis HS at 1885 Miramonte Avenue, Mountain View, CA. Registration will take place at room 201.

We will have registration begin at 8:30AM, will have a brief introduction to quiz bowl at the opening meeting, and we hope to begin the first round by 9:00. We project that the tournament will run from 9 until about 4:15PM, with an hour break for lunch at around noon. For lunch, teams can bring food, order food, or go out and get it.

Fees:
base fee: $60 per team
–$30 per team from schools that did not compete at a pyramidal quiz bowl tournament during the 2017-18 school year: “pyramidal quiz bowl” does not encompass other academic/trivia competitions like Science Bowl or History Bowl
–$10 per working buzzer
–$15 per staffer (must stay whole day)
Minimum entry fee: $0 per team
Payment (cash or check) will be taken at registration on Sept 22.

We urge teams attending to bring buzzers and staffers if available. Though we do not expect that teams have played tournaments previously, we will enforce all the gameplay rules as they are written in Sections D-H of the official rules of the Academic Competition Federation (http://acf-quizbowl.com/documents/official-acf-rules/), so all players must fully familiarize themselves with these rules before proceeding. Pay special attention to timing, pronunciation, and protest guidelines. You can find out more about what quiz bowl is here: (http://www.norcalquizbowl.org/?page_id=18)

Registration takes place on the NAQT website here => https://www.naqt.com/registration/field ... nt_id=9813
[one must first have an account on the NAQT website in order to register]

This is the 2018-19 High School Set Feedback Form. This is used to return feedback on the question set you played to the team that put the set together. Meaningful, constructive feedback from those that were at this tournament, whether as a staffer, coach or player, is welcome via this form.

Congratulations to Saratoga A for winning the HS division and to Valley Christian Middle for winning the MS division at the 2018 Bay Area Fall Novice tournament! A big thanks goes to all of the moderators and scorekeepers for their help, to Michael and Kashvi for their assistance in the control room, and to Ms. Yang and St. Francis for hosting.

Results can be found https://www.naqt.com/stats/tournament/s ... nt_id=9813

Details regarding this year's Cal Cup tournaments will be announced soon (probably this week).
