JaMES: How well do you know your Bible? (Summer 2020)

Post by AGoodMan »

Hello everyone,

Moses Kitakule and I are excited to preliminarily announce JaMES (Jon and Moses and Michael Exhaust Scripture), a open-level tossup-only set on the Bible. This set is primarily focused on the 66 books of the Protestant Bible (sorry, we are both Protestants), but will include a few questions on the apocrypha as well. As this is only a preliminary announcement, the distribution is pretty simple:

10 Old Testament
10 New Testament

The questions will be minimum 6 lines, Times New Roman size 10 after powermarking. We hope to have at least 5 packets for this set. Anything that is "noteworthy" from the Bible is fair game: books, people (or supernatural beings), places, verses, chapters, concepts, objects, deaths, battles, other events, etc. This set basically seeks to find the one who knows their Bible the best. Moses and I will work on this set whenever we find bandwidth, but hope to have a finished product by summer 2020.

We're excited about this project, and hope the wider quiz bowl community is as well!

I look forward to getting my ass kicked by Mike Cheyne and getting mad about the lack of apocrypha.

Because you mentioned emphasizing "concepts" and "objects," I'd love to know at some point what your guys' preferred translation(s) is/are.

Michael Kearney of Yale has joined the writing team. Moses has started churning out questions, and I'll get on it as well once I write enough HFT.

I apologise for the delayed update; Michael, Jon, and myself have all been quite busy and we haven't really had time to finish JaMES. That said, we recently started working on it again - so rest assured this side event is still happening. As it stands, JaMES is about 60% written and we hope to have it ready for next summer. I'll try to provide further updates as the set progresses. Thanks for your patience!

Will it take longer for this set to be produced than it took for the Israelites to make it through the wilderness?

(This is intended as humor--I am more interested in playing the set in a summer anyway.)

Basically, Moses did his share and I am being lazy and experiencing writer burnout.

Hi! I'm going to necro this thread. I'm about 90% of the way done with the Bible (with the extra books you'd expect me personally to read). You should finish this set sometime. 🥺

Apologies for the additional delay; Michael, Jon and I have all been quite busy this year. I should be able to start editing questions again soon. We won't keep you waiting much longer - we'll do our best to have the set ready for this summer!

A much belated update: as members of the JaMES team have taken on additional roles and responsibilities over the past five years (including, but not limited to, ACF President!) we've had to repeatedly push back the set. Unfortunately, at this point it's unlikely that we'll be able to finish JaMES as originally intended given our busy schedules. That said, we did write ~90 questions for the set, which I intend to polish and release at some point this summer! I won't be at CO but would be happy to hold an online reading of JaMES (date and format TBD) should there be sufficient interest. To those who have been waiting for updates for all these years - I apologize for the multiple delays and thank you so much for your patience! We will do our best to reward it with some quality Bible questions.

Moses was unable to reach the Promised Land.

Perhaps a quizbowler named Joshua can help.

Or Caleb Kendrick.

Is there any update on this? I saw at one point that a reading might take place around Festivus but that seems to have been scrapped.

I still plan on hosting a reading, but I'm moving it away from Festivus since this year's lineup is pretty crowded. I'm shooting for sometime towards the end of next week - you can find a scheduling poll here!

As per the results of the poll I linked upthread, I'll be doing a Discord reading of the entire set starting at 9 PM Eastern on Saturday, January 6th. I'll try and host this in one of the #packet channels in the main Discord but can also create a separate server if necessary.

I'm not totally sure how big a target audience there is for this, but I would prefer a separate server, so the only people playing are those who are really taking things seriously.

The reading will take place on its own dedicated Discord server (linked here). Please sign up via this extremely quick Google form - this will help me gauge the extent of interest and determine if I need to split this event into multiple rooms based on skill level (and find an additional reader). Lmk if there are any issues accessing either of these links!
