SNICK: Global Announcement (All 90s, Late Summer 2018)

Post by InvadErGII »

Play Quiz Bowl is pleased to announce Some Nineties Inquiries for Cool Kids, a tossups-only trash tournament whose content will remain entirely within the 1990s. I will be writing this, and it's gonna be hard. It will also be totally radical and ready in time for the second summer open or thereabouts. This will also have a somewhat unique distribution:

5/0 Music
5/0 Movies
5/0 TV
2/0 Video Games
1/0 Trash Lit
2/0 90s trends that don't fit into the above/other miscellany

50 percent of this event's proceeds will directly benefit the Bounceback Foundation.

I don't know about phat, but I almost guarantee Erik writes something fetch (I know that's a reference circa 2004, but I haven't gotten to use it in a while).

I also expect nothing less than a 1/0 or 0/1 "wazzup" distro.

Yes and yes.

Note that the current plan is for this to be tossups-only, but I may end up adding bonuses if there are enough ideas I like.

Is there any expectation for how many packets this will be? And whether the plan is currently still to only have tossups?

Probably all tossups, but I'm aiming for a larger number of packets to compensate for the lack of bonuses. Should be at least 10 rounds.

$15 per player at the Minnesota event (whose exact date/time is still unclear, which I hope to have resolved soon). I can't speak for the others.

I'll have a few other details on the set shortly, once the writing is done.

Bumped.

I've talked to a few Michigan folks and there's been some talk about trying to run this as a side event at whatever fall tournament Michigan and/or MSU hosts. Alternatively, if anybody else in the Midwest has any ideas or power to host a smallish Saturday event where we run this and other leftover events from the summer, I'd love to help organize something.

SNICK is now complete! I'm very excited for you all to see it. There are 10 rounds of 20 tossups each. Without giving too much away, it spans a lot of aspects of the 1990s, but has a decent amount of vanity as one might expect from a set like this. The set is pretty difficult, though the final packet is designed to be especially challenging - this would make for a great finals packet in a strong field or as some sort of bonus/challenge round otherwise.

If you want to run a SNICK mirror but haven't yet scheduled one, DM me! This set is a lot of fun and I hope you enjoy it.

This was really fun - challenging but it helped we had the king of 90s kids playing in our room. Other than one glaring omission this tournament (no spoilers but it was something I consider the epitome of the 90s along with a movie that did come up) was thorough and excellent.

I know a decent number of Midwestern folks wanted to play this, but I have no idea where this could be hosted or what tournament if any this could be attached to. I'd be willing to go somewhere and play this, or play online.

Ditto to what Matt and Mike said. I would love to play this online, and even more to play it in person, should it be possible to hold a physical mirror sometime in the autumn.

My thought is that this (and perhaps other unplayed-by-midwesterner events, such as this film set from Florida) could be played after some appropriate fall tournament hosted in the MIdwest (Sun God, Penn Bowl, I don't know the other tournaments at this point).

I'm afraid I have no idea who in the Midwest is hosting those things or when they would be played, though.

I'm definitely hopeful that something in the fall can run this in Chicago/Ann Arbor or thereabouts (and will do whatever I can to help make that happen), but I will absolutely do an online mirror if that doesn't materialize.

I've reached out to a few schools about another in-person mirror, but it's not looking promising. If that doesn't work out, I'll figure out a good time/method for an online mirror.

As much as I would love to play this, family stuff is going to prevent me from being available tonight to do so. If there's any chance this could be postponed until Saturday at the same time, that would be great, but if not I 100% understand and will just read the packets on my own sometime. :)

Maybe another reading could just be organized later (not necessarily by Erik, but by whoever)? I could do Saturday (I...think), but changing a schedule at short notice (especially because I think Matt is working right now) seems a poor idea.

Hoooo boy, this was fun. With 5 tossups left, Matt Lafer and Mike Cheyne were tied at 370 points, and remained tied after other players picked up the next 4 questions. Matt then powered tossup 20 of packet 10 to win the event - congratulations! Scores are as follows:

Matt Lafer 385
Mike Cheyne 370
Eric Mukherjee 285
Drew Scheeler 265
Bob Kilner 240
Matt Weiner 195
Greg Peterson 180
John Lawrence 110
Steve Oppenheim 85
Kenji Shimizu 60
Halle Friedman 30
Michael Coates 25
Lev Bernstein 15
Rahul Rao 15
Michael Wu 5
Mazin 10
Maharar -5

If there's anyone else who hasn't played this set but would still like to, let me know as soon as possible. I'd be happy to schedule another online mirror (though this Saturday may not be doable).
