2019 NAQT SCT New England @Harvard (2/9/2019)

Post by celsius273 »

Hi everyone,

Harvard College Bowl is pleased to announce that we will be hosting the NAQT New England Sectional Championship on Saturday, February 9, 2019.

Logistics:
The tournament will be held in Sever Hall, which is located next to the Tercentenary Theatre. We recommend using the MBTA Red Line to get to the tournament, as parking options in the area are limited and traffic can be unpredictable. Registration will begin at 8:15 am: we aim to hold the opening meeting at 9:00 am. A lunch break will take place when most convenient; teams will have access to a variety of food options in Harvard Square. Parking is admittedly difficult in Cambridge, but this is probably the best option.

I, Kelvin Li, am the tournament director, and I can be reached at [email protected]. In particular please let me know if you can bring any extra buzzers because we are still short.

Set Details:
Division 1 and Division 2 teams will compete on their corresponding SCT sets against like teams. Eligibility rules can be found here, and to quickly summarize, individuals are D2 eligible as long as they have not qualified and/or played at a prior ICT. All members must be D2 eligible for the team to play D2.

Each round consists of 22 tossups and 22 bonuses. Rounds will be untimed. Rules can be found here and we will be using one of the following formats (TBD based on registration)

Fees:
Tournament fees/discounts are the following:
+135: the first team (in either division)
+110: each team after the first (in either division)
-10: per buzzer system (must have power cord and at least 8 functional buzzers)
-20: new program discount per team (a program is considered new if no team from its school competed in an SCT, CC SCT, ICT, or CCCT in either of the two previous full competition years.)
-40: per staffer. If you are planning on bringing staffers, please email me with the staffers' contact information so I can include them on staffing emails.

Checks can be made out to "Harvard College Bowl." We also accept cash.

You may check/edit your registration (as well as view the current field) here, though we are capping the DII field at 18 teams (with a HIGH preference for keeping it at that number).

We are excited to see everyone on Saturday!

EDIT: rounds are 24/24 not 22/22
EDIT 2: wait jk this ^^^ is wrong, it’s 22/22

Thank you to all staffers (especially external staffers) for helping run an extremely smooth tournament. Your preparedness made this day go by quickly and without fanfare! Thank you to all teams for attending, and I hope everyone had a fun time playing!

Division 1 Results (not enough teams for a UG title)

Congratulations to Amherst A for going 8-1 and clearing the field.
Yale A placed second with a 5-4 record.

Division 2 Results

Congratulations to Harvard A for going 10-0 and defeating Harvard B in an advantaged final.
Harvard B placed second with an 8-2 record.

Yale B defeated MIT C to take 3rd place, and Williams A defeated Bowdoin A to take 5th place.

Full stats can be found here (http://hsquizbowl.org/db/tournaments/5605/)

Right now for D2, MIT C and Williams A are listed as tied for fourth because they have the same record. But, they are only tied because MIT C lost a 3rd place game to Yale B and Williams A won a 5th place game against Bowdoin A.

It seems like Harvard originally reported the stats correctly and NAQT retroactively changed it to the incorrect placement. I realize that this specific instance will not affect qualification to ICT, but I'm a bit concerned that results have been changed incorrectly without hosts' or competitors' knowledge. What if there is some other site where changing the placement does make a difference?

This has been corrected. Thank you for bringing it to our attention, and please let us know about any potential anomalies in the results for this SCT and the others around the country.
