I can't believe that I am voting for Frank Ocean over David Bowie. You have to respect what Bowie was doing with "Lazarus," but I just can't enjoy his songs that aren't upbeat.

This one had some really hard matchups
Robyn - Dancing on My Own vs. Perfume Genius - Queen

LCD Soundsystem - dance yrself clean vs. Tame Impala - Let It Happen
That strings part near the end with the drop gives this one to Let It Happen as one of the most sonically pleasing music moments of the 2010s, but Let It Happen still only wins barely, probably the closest match up here

Daft Punk (ft. Pharrell Williams & Nile Rodgers) - Get Lucky vs. M.I.A. - Bad Girls

Mitski - Your Best American Girl vs. Kendrick Lamar - m.A.A.d. City
M.A.A.D City has the same problem that DNA has, the first half goes on for a little too long with the better 2nd half not having enough time to truly shine, I'm still bummed Your Best American Girl knocked out Fourth of July though, but it's fine

Kanye West (ft. Pusha-T) - Runaway vs. Lorde - Royals
Royals has this issue where it is often attributed to as the reason for pop music getting so depressing following the club boom of the 2010s, Runaway does not have that problem

Alvvays - Archie, Marry Me vs. Flying Lotus (ft. Kendrick Lamar) - Never Catch Me
Never Catch Me is more eye-catching and at least to me feels more worthy of being immortalized. Archie Marry Me is great, but doesn't reach the same instrumental heights. Alvvays is still great though and I think a different Alvvays song (Atop a Cake mainly) could have won out here.

Courtney Barnett - Pedestrian at Best vs. M83 - Midnight City
Listening deeper to Pedestrian at Best has revealed a stunning lack of depth in the sonics of the song, Midnight City does not have that problem

David Bowie - Lazarus vs. Frank Ocean - Pyramids
Lazarus is tighter and cuts to the point better than Pyramids, hard matchup though

Wow, not a single tough call this round!

Robyn - Dancing on My Own vs. Perfume Genius - Queen

LCD Soundsystem - dance yrself clean vs. Tame Impala - Let It Happen

Daft Punk (ft. Pharrell Williams & Nile Rodgers) - Get Lucky vs. M.I.A. - Bad Girls

Mitski - Your Best American Girl vs. Kendrick Lamar - m.A.A.d. City

Kanye West (ft. Pusha-T) - Runaway vs. Lorde - Royals. Reasonable argument that Royals is more of a song of the decade, but Runaway is still the best song in the bracket.

Alvvays - Archie, Marry Me vs. Flying Lotus (ft. Kendrick Lamar) - Never Catch Me.

Courtney Barnett - Pedestrian at Best vs. M83 - Midnight City

David Bowie - Lazarus vs. Frank Ocean - Pyramids

Alvvays - Archie, Marry Me vs. Flying Lotus (ft. Kendrick Lamar) - Never Catch Me this was a tough one; while relistening to “Never Catch Me,” I was fully prepared to vote for the tight pop song... until the fully instrumental part starting at 2:33 hit

"Archie, Marry Me" and "Pedestrian at Best" were my two favorite "first listens" in this contest. Unfortunately for Alvvays, they're going up against a wildly underseeded track that features the best rapper of the decade on top of a crazy energetic production. While "Pedestrian at Best" has to face one of the most recognizable tunes of the decade.

Robyn - Dancing on My Own vs. Perfume Genius - Queen

LCD Soundsystem - dance yrself clean vs. Tame Impala - Let It Happen

Daft Punk (ft. Pharrell Williams & Nile Rodgers) - Get Lucky vs. M.I.A. - Bad Girls
Bad Girls is nothing compared to the Genius.com annotations of Bad Girls, which very sincerely takes the position that this is a song about cars and driving and nothing else and that includes lines like "My chain hits my chest when I'm banging on the dashboard" that has no other meaning it's just cars okay?

Mitski - Your Best American Girl vs. Kendrick Lamar - m.A.A.d. City
I've heard others songs on this album but somehow never m.A.A.d. City itself. It's pretty good, not my favorite, but I'm treating it similar to Hannah Hunt as a stand-in for a bunch of other songs that I like a lot more.

Kanye West (ft. Pusha-T) - Runaway vs. Lorde - Royals

Alvvays - Archie, Marry Me vs. Flying Lotus (ft. Kendrick Lamar) - Never Catch Me

Courtney Barnett - Pedestrian at Best vs. M83 - Midnight City

These are both fine. Not sure which one I prefer but also neither one captivates me enough even after all these listens to want to figure it out so I'm abstaining.

Robyn - Dancing on My Own vs. Perfume Genius - Queen
"Dancing on My Own" continues to be okay, but just okay. The simplicity of the verses struck me this time through. "Queen" doesn't have anything that sticks out to me as appealing, and seems to be happy being weird for the sake of being weird. Not a problem, but not a selling point.

LCD Soundsystem - dance yrself clean vs. Tame Impala - Let It Happen
I'm warming up to "dance yourself clean" the more I hear it, although it could still drop the intro and about three minutes and be more appealing to my valuable time. "Let it Happen" is still boring - more like "Lame Impala", am I right?

Daft Punk (ft. Pharrell Williams & Nile Rodgers) - Get Lucky vs. M.I.A. - Bad Girls
"Get Lucky" is great; "Bad Girls" is annoying and repetitive. Next.

Mitski - Your Best American Girl vs. Kendrick Lamar - m.A.A.d. City
Count "Your Best American Girl" among the 'better upon second listen' pile; I like the lack of formal song structure and the underlying fragility behind both the initial vocals and the noise-rock explosions. I think I've figured out my problem with "m.a.a.d City", which is that I find the timbre of the main vocalist's voice annoying, and it overrides my ability to enjoy the lyrics. Also, the chorus has a real lazy rhyme to it.

Kanye West (ft. Pusha-T) - Runaway vs. Lorde - Royals
Kudos to Kanye for making all the elements of "Runaway" compelling, even his meta-laced self-takedown which doesn't quite excuse or condemn himself for his megalomania, narcissism, and erratic id. But damn,"Royals" is such a gem, without a wasted moment or a hint of sprawl. Tough call right here, but Royals is just so sharp.

Alvvays - Archie, Marry Me vs. Flying Lotus (ft. Kendrick Lamar) - Never Catch Me
"Never Catch Me" is weird and schizoid and disjointed in ways that are interesting, but not really engaging. This Alvays song, though, has some legs, and some measured production design which I really appreciate.

Courtney Barnett - Pedestrian at Best vs. M83 - Midnight City
"Pedestrian at Best" is a worse version of "Archie, Marry Me". "Midnight City" is a worse version of "dance yrself clean". It sounds like the theme song to a CW show stretched beyond 30 seconds. Abstain.

David Bowie - Lazarus vs. Frank Ocean - Pyramids
"Lazarus", what a painfully earnest meditation on the meaning of making art. There are plenty of things I like about "Pyramids", but I started checking the clock on it about three minutes in.

Robyn - Dancing on My Own vs. LCD Soundsystem - dance yrself clean
"Dancing on My Own" is the best song of this weak-ass bracket by a pretty healthy margin. I hope it wins so I can see it go up against some real competition.

Daft Punk (ft. Pharrell Williams & Nile Rodgers) - Get Lucky vs. Kendrick Lamar - m.A.A.d. City
This was a hard decision, and I still love "m.A.A.d city," but Get Lucky is just way too catchy to pass up.

Kanye West (ft. Pusha-T) - Runaway vs. Alvvays - Archie, Marry Me
OK, I realize that taste is subjective, but I'm very annoyed that the Alvvays song managed to win out in a bracket of 7 significantly better songs. insert rant about how bracketed head-to-head matchups are still constrained by Arrow's impossibility theorem "Runaway" is my second-favorite hip hop song (after "Never Catch Me," coincidentally), so this was an easy choice.

Courtney Barnett - Pedestrian at Best vs. Frank Ocean - Pyramids
The Courtney Barnett song has really grown on me over the course of this bracket.

Robyn - Dancing on My Own vs. LCD Soundsystem - dance yrself clean
stop voting for dance yrself clean it’s not that good

Daft Punk (ft. Pharrell Williams & Nile Rodgers) - Get Lucky vs. Kendrick Lamar - m.A.A.d. City
Still the best song left in this bracket. And if it loses to “Get Lucky” that will be especially upsetting.

Kanye West (ft. Pusha-T) - Runaway vs. Alvvays - Archie, Marry Me
“Runaway’s” matchups so far have been comically easy.

Courtney Barnett - Pedestrian at Best vs. Frank Ocean - Pyramids
Great run by Courtney, and I’m so glad this bracket introduced me to this album and song. Unfortunately, “Pyramids” is an all time great song and the second best one left in this bracket.

Robyn - Dancing on My Own vs. LCD Soundsystem - dance yrself clean
"Dancing on My Own" has gotten boring on the sixth listen; can't say the same for "dance yrself clean" - which is something I didn't imagine I would ever say at the start of this bracket, but here we are! Songs can surprise you.

Daft Punk (ft. Pharrell Williams & Nile Rodgers) - Get Lucky vs. Kendrick Lamar - m.A.A.d. City
"Get Lucky" and "Runaway", to me, have to be the final matchup; most everyone else is just spinning their wheels.

Kanye West (ft. Pusha-T) - Runaway vs. Alvvays - Archie, Marry Me
"Archie, Marry Me" has been a very pleasant surprise indeed - a breath of fresh air, perfectly plotted - but I don't think it can win this matchup.

Courtney Barnett - Pedestrian at Best vs. Frank Ocean - Pyramids
I've thought that "Pedestrian at Best" has been an apt descriptor for several rounds now. "Pyramids" seems pretty iffy at this point, but I don't make the bracket, I just votes in it.

So is it me, or does the general quality of the "acme" of songs from the 2010s pale in comparison to the 2000s? Is it because of potential blind spots in the selection process? The Balkanization of music even further in the Internet age? Was it just a dreary, fuzzy, mumbly decade? What from our offerings here would make the final four of the 2000s bracket?

i really like the 2010s musically. well, mostly the first half, which is what's being represented at this point. i grew up bingeing the music of the 2000s, and the 2010s feel fresher to me. out of the songs that remain, the only one that doesnt really tickle me is Get Lucky, which is a personal bias, because it's certainly the most well-crafted pop song remaining and maybe a sort of rightful winner. maad city is on par with paper planes, whatever wins this bracket is as good as hey ya!, Cash's Hurt is overmythologized though classic - at least half the songs that remain are classic, and literally everything is better than Mr. Brightside (though sure, i can sing it from memory).

Though this bracket might have a glut of long arty bull, i think it's pretty representative of the quality of the music produced this decade. it may have done better with more pop pop songs, or rap songs (in the case of rap songs, i think one-per-artist especially hurts), or punk songs (there was only danny nedelko which i enjoyed very much and died a gruesome death to runaway), or none of those things or other actual genres, but in fairness a lot of popular songs kinda died early and we would have a hard time approving of a, for example, country song that wasnt old town road remix i guess. when it comes down to it, some voters (i do) think Come Down to Us and Pyramids are fine encapsulations of the decade, others not, and that can't be reconciled. which is okay.

tl;dr critical acclaim sucks i suck so i like it

Robyn - Dancing on My Own vs. LCD Soundsystem - dance yrself clean
dance yrself clean is that good. it is almost close to being the maggot brain or marquee moon of after 2000. anything that comes anywhere near those 2 songs is like, wtf. it's euphoria. sprawl ii is also kind of like that, but it's not looong. dancing on my own is a little more euphoric.

Daft Punk (ft. Pharrell Williams & Nile Rodgers) - Get Lucky vs. Kendrick Lamar - m.A.A.d. City

Kanye West (ft. Pusha-T) - Runaway vs. Alvvays - Archie, Marry Me

Courtney Barnett - Pedestrian at Best vs. Frank Ocean - Pyramids
albums artists btw.
these are the two most essential non pop or rap artists of this decade.

Daft Punk (ft. Pharrell Williams & Nile Rodgers) - Get Lucky vs. Kendrick Lamar - m.A.A.d. City. I'm not sure which of these songs I prefer, but Get Lucky's popularity and influence make it an obvious choice to continue on a "song of the decade" competition.

Kanye West (ft. Pusha-T) - Runaway vs. Alvvays - Archie, Marry Me

Courtney Barnett - Pedestrian at Best vs. Frank Ocean - Pyramids. Absolutely flummoxed how one of these is a top four song of the decade.
