Long Train Runnin’ vs. Maggie May
--Two songs I would be unbothered if I never heard again, but could probably sing in their entirety. I'm surprising myself by picking Rod, but if I try to forget how overfamiliar I am with "Maggie May," I hear a fun song, sung with cheeky rakishness. And good mandolin.

Proud Mary vs. It’s Too Late
--Not a huge fan of either, but the Turners' version of "Proud Mary" is a bit too Vegas-showy for me.

Born to Run vs. Ramblin’ Man
--Tough, tough, tough. But Bruce is probably close to my top overall pick in this field.

Tangled Up in Blue vs. Layla
--But Bob really is going to be my top overall pick. Dylan has said he feels like this song is unfinished, and he tinkers with the lyrics in live shows. But it's a stunner from the greatest American musical artist of the last 60 years (fight me!).

Long Train Runnin’ vs. Maggie May
I've listened to Maggie May a lot more, but after listening to them a couple of times for this tournament I have determined that I have been listening to the worse song.

Proud Mary vs. It’s Too Late
Proud Mary rocks.

Born to Run vs. Ramblin’ Man
These are both great songs.

Tangled Up in Blue vs. Layla
The best song on Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs is whichever one you are currently listening to.

Long Train Runnin’ vs. Maggie May -- the 7th and 8th best songs here
Proud Mary vs. It’s Too Late -- Tapestry is a great album, but It's Too Late doesn't stand out much. It also doesn't help that I think of the Derek and the Dominoes song first. In contrast, the Ike and Tina version of Proud Mary stands out even if I did discover the CCR version before it. Since Layla might be out after this round, a shoutout to It's Too Late, Bell Bottom Blues, and Little Wing, some really great songs on the album that get overshadowed by the title track.
Born to Run vs. Ramblin’ Man -- Ramblin' Man has some nice wind-downs and wind-ups, but none of them can match the "1!-2!-3!-4!" yell in Born to Run.
Tangled Up in Blue vs. Layla -- it's a testament to the simplicity and depth of Tangled up in Blue that there are so many excellent live versions with different lyrics and the original is still the best of the lot. Layla is a great song, probably the second-best in this quadrant. But it can't beat the best song Dylan ever wrote (and re-wrote, and re-wrote).

Lotta matchups here that feel like they should have happened about a month ago.

Long Train Runnin’ vs. Maggie May OK
Proud Mary vs. It’s Too Late
Born to Run vs. Ramblin’ Man I just can't vote for Springsteen over Allman Brothers, even if it's the best Springsteen song and the worst Allman Brothers song.
Tangled Up in Blue vs. Layla Two best songs in this part of the bracket matched up against each other. Tangled is one of the maybe half dozen songs here that could make me think twice about Layla, but it's still Layla. Tangled is a great song. Layla is a real good song, plus two of the top 5ish guitar players ever (Hendrix, Page, R. Johnson in no particular order) on the top of their games plus the best vocal performance of Clapton's career.

Beast of Burden vs. Me and Bobby McGee

What’s Going On vs. Zombie
Particularly relevant right now, but would still win handily in any other political moment.

Midnight Train to Georgia vs. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road

Superstition vs. Jolene
I hate to vote against Stevie Wonder, and he's put out a ton of songs that I would pick over the rest of this bracket in a heartbeat. That said, "Superstition" isn't really one of my favorites, and I love "Jolene" so much that it narrowly edges out a win.

Beast of Burden vs. Me and Bobby McGee
What’s Going On vs. Zombie I have nothing but respect for Fela Kuti and what he was able to to do effect change and bring his culture to the world. But Marvin Gaye is a legend, and this song and album are the peak of his output. Almost every part of it is a classic: we all even instantly recognize the saxophone riff.
Midnight Train to Georgia vs. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road What an uninspiring matchup. Here's to hoping I don't have to listen to Elton John again.
Superstition vs. Jolene And we're back to having two of the three best songs in the group matched against each other. It hurts to vote against Superstition's groove, but Jolene has a better vocal performance and is more influential.

Beast of Burden vs. Me and Bobby McGee
I'm pretty sure I've voted against each of these songs at least once before, but this is where the road has taken us. I noticed that both songs are at basically the exact same tempo - even when "Me and Bobby McGee" speeds up, it just goes to double-time.

What’s Going On vs. Zombie
I find it tough to really get into "What's Going On", which has a fine vocal performance, but commits the cardinal sin of having way too much of just actual talking during a song. "Zombie" is a marathon, but it uses its time well.

Midnight Train to Georgia vs. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
Tough call here. Like but don't love both. Guess I'll lean Elton as "Midnight Train to Georgia" seems way more 60s than 70s to me.

Superstition vs. Jolene
It's been a good run, and I like "Jolene", but Superstition is a work of genius, so farewell.

What I will be regretting, if not for the rest of my life at least for the next few hours, is how benighted y'all are to be knocking Dylan out of this thing at this stage. Weeeeeeak.

Psycho Killer vs. Ohio
I am not heartbroken that "Psycho Killer" took out "Bohemian Rhapsody," but this time it is not a contest.

Won’t Get Fooled Again vs. Wish You Were Here
I feel like this is too early to have to choose between these two bands, but in this case it's a pretty easy pick. As has already been mentioned "Won't Get Fooled Again" is at least a couple of minutes longer than it needs to be. But once you get past the first 15 seconds "Wish You Were Here" is nearly perfect.

Stairway to Heaven vs. The Chain
I don't like having to vote against possibly my favorite artist of the decade in favor of one that I consider to be overrated. But "The Chain" just isn't my favorite Fleetwood Mac song.

Let It Be vs. American Girl
I am so glad that "American Girl" was chosen for the Tom Petty song and that it has had such a fantastic run. I won't be disappointed if it somehow pulls off the upset, but this is where I have to vote against it.

Psycho Killer vs. Ohio
I first heard Ohio before I heard Psycho Killer.
even today or whatever, the song's lyrics or music dont move me very much, its power is mostly in its remarkable timeliness and sincerity and inseparability from the event (it was recorded 17 days after Kent State) and the refrain "four dead in ohio", which can't be matched by any "protest" song.

(don't) compare to psycho killer, which, despite the gravity of an actual "psycho killer", is a joke song accidental all time hit which doesn't have any serious inspiration or implications, seriously.
with some artists, i take issue with whatever choice of song ends up being their most popular over the years, but remarkably for a band as "eccentric" and popular both in general and among quizbowlers as Talking Heads, Psycho Killer captures pretty perfectly what makes them - at least their early music - great. i still sleep well at night hearing david byrne's first oH Oh OH OH AYAYAYAYA

Won’t Get Fooled Again vs. Wish You Were Here

Stairway to Heaven vs. The Chain
stairway to heaven in addition to hotel california and through the fire and the flames and Imagine are all songs i listened to on repeat in middle school (like several hundred times on repeat). and actually (not a surprise), Stairway to Heaven is certainly the best of all of them. I don't care if it wins this matchup or the whole bracket.

in winter break of my sophomore year (a pretty bad year - i played a lot of Hearthstone trying to hit legend, often slept less than 5 hours, and got awful grades in relevant subjects) i holed up and played a trivial team-based FPS called Block n Load (it combined shooting with Minecraft-style building) with my friends. while playing, I listened to Rumours (more than any other album) on repeat - my first conscious listen to any songs off Rumours, including Dreams and Go Your Own Way. i really liked Never Going Back Again and The Chain. since that time ~4 years ago, The Chain has gotten more popular, or more iconic, for some reasons. Rumours is still peak "pop", or soft/"yacht rock", or fleetwood mac as a genre, and The Chain is somehow the most fractured, most convincing song on the album

Let It Be vs. American Girl
I'll let this matchup be
