Prison Bowl XV Mainsite: March 25th, Hunter College HS

Hunter College High School is thrilled to announce that it will be hosting the mainsite of Prison Bowl XV, our annual housewrite, on Saturday, March 25th, 2023. Hunter College High School is located at 71 East 94th Street, New York, NY 10128, between Park and Madison Avenues. The tournament will be directed by Hunter Quiz Bowl co-presidents Matthew Kohn (myself) and Jacob Hardin-Bernhardt, with assistance from our advisor Ms. Caitlin Samuel and the rest of the Hunter Quiz Bowl team.

Format
This tournament will be in-person. There will be a brief opening meeting at 8:45 AM, and the first round will start at 9:00 AM. The tournament is expected to end around 6:00 PM.

The tournament will be using Prison Bowl XV, a hard high school difficulty set written and edited by the Hunter Quiz Bowl team. Information about the set is linked here.

Tournament games will follow standard ACF rules consisting of untimed rounds of 20 tossups and 20 three-part 30-point bonuses. Each packet will come with a tiebreaker tossup in the event of ties. 15-point powers and -5-point negs will apply, though there will be no double negs. There will be no bonus bouncebacks.

The tournament will consist of bracketed round robin prelims and re-bracketed round robin playoffs; the exact format will be decided after the field size is determined. All teams will be guaranteed at least 9 rounds, and we expect all teams will be able to play at least 10 rounds.

There will be trophies for top teams and book prizes for the top ten scorers in prelims.

The due date to drop teams will be March 19th; teams dropping after March 19th are subject to a $30 drop fee until March 22nd. Teams dropping after March 22nd will be expected to pay full price. The soft field cap for this tournament is 24 teams, but we are likely to expand the field as necessary.

Payment
$85 for the first team from a school
$75 for each subsequent team
$-5 for each working buzzer system
$-15 for each moderator
Minimum fee for each team from a school is $50, but further discounts can be negotiated on a case-by-case basis.
If your team needs an invoice and/or W-9 form, please reach out and we can provide you with the requisite documents either by email before the tournament or on paper on the day of the tournament.
Bringing payment on the day of the tournament is highly preferred. If doing so presents a challenge for your team, please reach out and we’ll be happy to work something out.

Transportation
Hunter College High School is located at 71 E 94th Street, New York, NY 10128 between Park and Madison Avenues. It is accessible via the 96th Street stop on the 6 train line, the 86th Street stop on the 4/5/6 train lines, and the 86th and 96th Street stops on the Q train line. We can also be reached by the M1-4 buses along 5th and Madison Avenues, M101-103 buses on Lexington and 3rd Avenues, M96 and M106 buses on 96th Street, and the M86 bus on 86th Street. There is a bus drop-off area at our school along Park Avenue, and cars can park at Majestic Car Park, located on 95th Street between Park and Lexington.

In case the curb around Hunter and Majestic Car Park are both crowded, there are a few other parking options:

Food
For lunch, we plan to release teams for an hour to explore the numerous local eateries in the area. We’ll be providing a list detailing where the best of these can be found.

Hunter Quiz Bowl is wholeheartedly committed to keeping quizbowl a safe, welcoming, and fair space for all involved, be it players, moderators, or anyone else. Update: we've expanded the field to 30 teams! Surely this is some kind of record for filling a field.

We've hit our secondary field cap of 30 teams! We do plan to expand to 36 teams, which will be a hard field cap, but for now we're choosing to hold off on that because we expect a few teams to drop based on past patterns. We don't want to expand until we have a better sense of how many teams will 100% be able to come; since registration for this tournament is nascent, we're going to give it a bit. Waitlist teams are likely to be able to play because of teams dropping and/or field expansion, but we cannot guarantee space just yet. We're also going to give schools signing up their first team preference on waitlist spots over extra teams from schools already in the field.

I understand that teams might need to use pseudonyms for certain reasons, but why did anyone think it a good idea to intentionally mimic the name of another school in the area? Even if the "<3" made it into the stats report, it would still cause undue confusion at best and insulting impersonation at worst. The latest Groger Ranks even credited Princess Anne with this pseudonymous school's stats! School pseudonyms should not be a place to try to be "clever", and impersonating another team (whether intentional or not) should certainly not be encouraged.
