2023 ACF Fall at UNC Chapel Hill (10/14/2023)

Post by michaeleng »

We are pleased to announce that the Mid-Atlantic site of 2023 ACF Fall will be held at UNC Chapel Hill on Saturday, October 14, 2023.

The tournament will take place at Dey Hall (200 South Rd, Chapel Hill, NC 27514). The opening meeting will begin at 8:45 and gameplay will begin at 9:00. Miranda Smith will be tournament directing. Please direct any questions about this site to her at [email protected].

Eligibility
To make this tournament more accessible to new teams and players, ACF is enforcing eligibility guidelines for ACF Fall. Players are not eligible to compete at 2023 ACF Fall if, at any point, they:
  • Scored more than 50 PPG in the prelims of a college mirror of ACF Fall, OR
  • Were the top scorer (highest overall PPG) on a team that finished in the top 15% of the field, rounded up, at ACF Fall, OR
  • Scored more than 40 PP20TUH in the prelims of HSNCT or 60 PPG in the prelims of PACE NSC, OR
  • Were the top scorer (highest overall PPG) on a team that finished in the top 30 at HSNCT or top 10 at PACE NSC, OR
  • Finished in the top 12 in IPNCT
  • Scored more than 20 PPG in the prelims of ACF Nationals

These eligibility restrictions do not apply to high school only mirrors.

Players are responsible for determining their own eligibility. If you have questions, email [email protected]. Failure to abide by these eligibility guidelines may result in disqualification from ACF Fall and/or future ACF tournaments.

Rules
This tournament will follow ACF’s official gameplay rules. Rules specifically pertaining to online tournaments have been rendered in blue.

Registration
Fill out the central 2023 ACF Fall registration form with all relevant information. The form is here. The field for each site can be found here.

If possible, teams should register for the site that is geographically closest to them and/or is in the region they would normally attend. The field cap is 24 teams, after which teams will be placed on a waitlist or potentially assigned to another site. Please register by October 9, 2023.

Fees
  • Base fee per team: $120
  • New to quizbowl discount: −$80
  • Shorthanded discount (1–2 players): −$60
  • Travel discount: −$10 per 200 miles traveled one-way
  • Buzzers: −$10 per functional buzzer system
  • Staffers: −$25 per staffer with a functional laptop. Staffers must register with ACF in advance by filling out this form.

The new to quizbowl discount is intended for schools that have not sent a team to any mainstream collegiate academic tournament (not counting exclusively novice tournaments) since September 2021, and which have no players who competed in non-novice collegiate tournaments during that same period.

Packet Submission
Like 2022 ACF Fall, no teams are required to submit questions in order to play the tournament. However, ACF still needs high-quality, half-packet submissions from teams to complete the set.

Below is the submission schedule for ACF Fall. All deadlines are at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time. All submitting teams are eligible for an additional −$20 quality discount if their questions are particularly polished and usable, up to a maximum discount of −$60. Teams may submit a maximum of one half-packet.
  • Sunday, August 20: −$50
  • Sunday, August 27: −$40
  • Sunday, September 3: −$30
  • Sunday, September 10: −$20
  • Sunday, September 17: −$10

If you would like to submit a half-packet, fill out this form. ACF will respond with a half-packet template specifying which categories you are assigned to write.

Each submission consists of 12 tossups and 12 bonuses. Before writing, please review ACF's packet submission guidelines and stick to the format provided. Answers should generally emphasize playability over creativity – aim for creative and interesting clues with straightforward answerlines. These 5 model tossups reflect the difficulty and style to aim for. When finished, submit your half-packet by emailing it to [email protected].

Your assigned half-packet will ask for questions from more specific categories within the distribution. For instance, instead of being assigned an “American Literature” tossup, you might be asked to write a question on a 20th-century American poem, or an Economics bonus instead of “Social Science/Philosophy.” This should reduce redundancy in submissions and maximize the number of submitted questions we can use, without being too constraining. The submission form offers space to indicate your writing interests in each category, which we will do our best to accommodate.

Thanks to all the staff, players, and teams who contributed to making this tournament a success. I have just uploaded the stats online. Please let us know if there are any stat issues.

Congratulations to Virginia B for winning both the Overall and DII Titles. Virginia Tech A and Virginia A tied for 2nd place and UNC B was 2nd place DII team.

Wahoowah! The future of the UVA quizbowl team is looking bright. I'd like to thank Luke Schaarschuch for his cheerful rendering of driving duties, Em Gunter for having lots of buzzer sets, and every UVA competitor for subjecting themselves to a day that started at 0500 and ended at 2300. I'd like to apologize for any and all occasions on which my boundless enthusiasm for quiz bowl may have rankled; the same goes for that time I sang what I told one room was Boccherini's Minuet, but was in fact Vivaldi's Spring sonata.

I'd like to thank the entire UNC team and various other North Carolinians (plus the GOAT, Matt Weiner) for their successful pulling-off of this tournament. I'd like to thank Kevin Thomas for his tournament direction. I'd like to thank Miranda Smith for her pre-tournament communication and assure her that I didn't get ticketed for parking in what I erroneously believed was a deck open to the public. Finally, I'd like to thank Noah Chin for being a good moderation buddy. And I'd like to thank the good people of Chapel Hill for enabling us to play relatively unbothered by anything accompanying the football game UNC played that evening. What is quizbowl if not attended by the dulcet tones of "California Gurls [Remix] [Bass Boosted] [15 Minutes]" wafting into one ear from the adjacent quadrangle?

Everyone who came to this tournament I hope and expect to see at ACF Winter, which we at the University of Virginia will host on November 11th. Be there or be square.
