ICCS (Collegiate Novice) @ UCLA Oct. 25th

Postby rylltraka » Thu Sep 11, 2014 2:18 am

UCLA is proud to announce that we will be holding a mirror of the Introductory Collaborative Collegiate Set (ICCS) here at UCLA on October 25th, as a starter tournament for new players to cut their teeth on before the main collegiate circuit begins in earnest. The writing staff for this tournament comprises many of the luminaries of the quizbowl community who can guarantee its quality and its applicability to new players - the full announcement can be found at viewtopic.php?f=8&t=16162&p=288089&hilit=iccs#p288089.

The tournament will be ten packets long - a fairly short quizbowl day. Tournament scheduling will depend on the number of teams present, but the plan is to open registration at 830 am and be up and running by 9. Some light breakfast may be provided. Lunch is available at the UCLA campus and in Westwood proper.

Who is eligible? The eligibility rules run as follows:

1. All ACF eligibility rules apply, except when they contradict the rules below.
2. This is a tournament for introducing collegiate novices to quizbowl. Consequently, no high school teams or players are eligible.
3. Anyone (who does not break Rules 1 or 2) who has never played quizbowl before is automatically eligible. Other academic competition does not count as quizbowl for this rule.
4. Players meeting one or more of the following criteria must apply to the head editor for special permission to play:
i. If you have already completed your second year of college (calculated from time in college, not credits). Time in a post-secondary high school program does not count.
ii. If you have ever finished in the top 15 in scoring at PACE NSC or top 30 in scoring at NAQT HSNCT, or played on a team that finished in the top 10 at NSC or the top 20 at HSNCT.
iii. If you have ever scored at least 30 points per game at any college tournament.
iv. If you have ever won any college tournament.
5. Anyone who does not fall into any of the four categories listed in Rule 4 is automatically eligible to play.
6. Even if one of the rule 4 categories applies to you, you may still be able to play! Email fredmorlan@gmail.com to apply for special dispensation. To apply: 1) state which of the rule 4 points would render you otherwise ineligible; 2) list when and how you achieved any of the accomplishments that led to your being otherwise ineligible; and 3) state succinctly why you want to play.

The cost will be $15 per person, with a $5 discount for buzzer systems that we use in-tournament. Please have payment ready at the start of the tournament. There is at present no field cap.

Parking information will be added to this post once rooms are formally reserved, which will occur once school begins at UCLA (after Oct. 2).

To register, please email the tournament director, the geriatric and irascible Mik Larsen, at mlarsen@ucla-dot-edu. Please ensure that the subject line makes clear that you are registering. Posting in this thread is also helpful. If you have any questions about the tournament content, email fredmorlan@gmail.com; any questions about its operation, mlarsen@ucla-dot-edu.

Field at present:
Claremont - 1/1 Buzzer
UCSD - 1 or 2 teams?/1 Buzzer
USC - 1 team?
UC Riverside - 1 team?
CalTech - 1 team/1 Buzzer?
UCLA House teams - to taste

As we are nearing two weeks before the tournament and I have not heard any formal statements of interest, I am considering canceling the tournament.

Edit: This is no longer true.

All right, here's the important information for the tournament:

-The tournament will be held in the Humanities Hall on the UCLA campus. Consult this handy map: http://maps.ucla.edu/campus/ You'll probably want to try and park in Parking Structure 2 or 3, maybe 5. Parking is, I believe, $12 for the day.

-Please meet in A26 at 830 am so that we can start up by 900 am.

-If you cannot pay in cash, which is preferred, checks can be made out to Mik Larsen. If you've already made it out to College Bowl Club of UCLA, that's okay, but Mik Larsen is preferable.

-If you are lost or late or have suffered some unspecific calamity, please call or text me at 310-866-1057.

UCSD won this tournament with an 8-2 record, with UCLA A and Claremont tied for second at 7-3. Complete statistics are here. Thanks to all the teams for coming, and thanks to Sam Winikow, Justin Su, Jason Cheng, and Kahao Lim for staffing!
