Best Song of the 2000s: HEYYYYYYYYYYYY YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Post by AKKOLADE »

WARNING: Explicit Content May Be In Songs and/or Videos

Here's the current ballot, with YouTube links.

Click through here to see the full bracket. I am excellent at visual design. You can see zoomed in sub-brackets here.

To destroy everyone's holiday season and the peace upon the seasons, I'll be running a single elimination tournament of the best songs of the 2000s as chosen by me. It'll be limited to one song per artist, excluding featured appearances.

I have some 300+ songs I'm trying to listen to before I launch this, so I hopefully will have this done by next week.

By 2000s, you mean the decade of 2000-2009, right?

In any event, as the organizer of the annual "HSQB's Favorite Hit Song" poll/thread, I eagerly await having STRONG OPINIONS on this matter. Expect a lot of "I understand why you included this popular song by [artist], but [third single that barely made top 40] is a thousand times better"

The best song of the 2000s is objectively either "Hey Ya" or "All My Friends".

the songs in the preview are my currently planned #1 seeds

Fun fact: I have 200 more songs to listen to! 8 of them are by Coldplay! That's about 8 more songs of Coldplay than I've intentionally listened to this year!

So, I'm struggling to get this down to 64, honestly. There might be some kind of vote-in thing of some sort.

If "Bleed" by Meshuggah isn't included, I riot. That song is iconic and typifies 2000s progressive metal along with, say, "Octavarium" by Dream Theater.

I’m automatically voting against Jay-Z, no matter the quality of the song, because he pulled all his music off Spotify and YouTube. The first one is understandable, but annoying. The second one is going too far.

Even if you disagree with Jay-Z's decision (which he has the right to do), isn't the whole point of this to vote on your opinion of the songs, rather than your opinions of his business/personal decisions.

Hmm, do you enter a Jason Isbell song from his solo career or from when he was in Drive-By Truckers? And how do you limit yourself to just one DBT song??? I mean, I guess "Zip City" came out in 2001, so....

I've listened to probably 500+ songs this week. I have 22 or so left to check. I've narrowed the rest down to a list of 90 songs.

My plan is to lock 60 songs into the field. The last four will be picked from a vote-off out of ten-ish songs.

Post by AKKOLADE »

So, I couldn't narrow it down. So what we have are 80 songs. The top 48 seeds will be revealed after we do round zero, where we narrow 32 songs down to 16 for the last spots.

The only rules for voting are that you must listen to each song in the voting, and you must vote for each match-up.

Little Lion Man – Mumford and Suns vs. Can’t Get You Out of My Head – Kylie Minogue - Kylie Minogue rules, and Little Lion Man infuriates me with its aggressive mediocrity.

Little Lion Man – Mumford and Suns vs. Can’t Get You Out of My Head – Kylie Minogue

Little Lion Man is one of the two or so Mumford and Sons songs I actually quite like, though I've always found the profanity in the chorus a bit jarring. But Can't Get You Out of My Head is a top-tier earworm and one of the best dancepop hits of the decade, so it wins pretty easily here.

I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor – Arctic Monkeys vs. Since U Been Gone – Kelly Clarkson

I absolutely adore "Dancefloor", which will always be THE Arctic Monkeys song to me. There are much better Kelly Clarkson songs. So this one is pretty easy too.

1234 – Feist vs. Not Ready to Make Nice – Dixie Chicks

Country hits so frequently feel either silly or impersonal, but this one hits hard, and was a bold-ass move to release in 2006 after their controversy with Dubya. The Feist song is alright but I don't really see myself listening to it outside of an iPod commercial.

Me and Giuliani Down by the Schoolyard (A True Story) – !!! vs. Do You Realize?? – The Flaming Lips

I didn't think I had heard either of these songs before, but I recognized Do You Realize pretty quickly. It's aight. I'll take the !!! song over it, it's pretty funky and cool if a little long.

First Day of My Life – Bright Eyes vs. Best of You – Foo Fighters

I had not heard the Bright Eyes song before. I thought it kind of stunk. There are better Foo songs, but THE BEST THE BEST THE BEST THE BEST THE BEST Of You at least has meme value.

Clocks – Coldplay vs. Zip City – Drive-By Truckers

I've heard so much about Drive-By Truckers, so this was my first experience with them. Solid if not outstanding tune, I'll def give the rest of Southern Rock Opera a listen. I actively hate Clocks, so this was not a tough decision.

Standing in the Way of Control – Gossip vs. Stuck Between Stations – The Hold Steady

Another match of songs that are new to me! I'm not from Minnesota, so The Hold Steady's charms are lost on me. Not a huge fan of the lead singer's voice or the rambling lyrics, but it is nice instrumentally and may grow on me. Standing in the Way of Control has a really good chorus, even if it's not outstanding overall.

Hoppipola – Sigur Ros vs. Chasing Pavements – Adele

Chasing Pavements is an excellent, deeply sad song that showed us that Adele is gonna be around for a while, even if it's inferior to most of 21. I don't really get the Sigur Ros song- do people who like these guys actually like them or just say they do?

Gonna try to keep writing these blurbs, at least for the first round.

Little Lion Man – Mumford and Suns vs. Can’t Get You Out of My Head – Kylie Minogue
Surprised that Kylie Minogue is doing so well on here. It's certainly good, I just love "Little Lion Man."

I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor – Arctic Monkeys vs. Since U Been Gone – Kelly Clarkson
This matchup made me realize that I'm going to be heavily biased towards songs that I actually liked at the time. =P

1234 – Feist vs. Not Ready to Make Nice – Dixie Chicks

Me and Giuliani Down by the Schoolyard (A True Story) – !!! vs. Do You Realize?? – The Flaming Lips
Easiest choice on here.

First Day of My Life – Bright Eyes vs. Best of You – Foo Fighters
Both good, the latter is just a little too repetitive for me.

Clocks – Coldplay vs. Zip City – Drive-By Truckers

Standing in the Way of Control – Gossip vs. Stuck Between Stations – The Hold Steady
Stuck Between Stations has some nice moments, but I don't like his voice, and Standing in the Way of Control seemed overall like a better song.

Hoppipola – Sigur Ros vs. Chasing Pavements – Adele
Sigur Ros is boring.
