PANDA (HS regular, 2/10/2024, St. Joseph High School (IN))

Post by dhumphreys17 »

The Quizbowl Club of Notre Dame, in collaboration with St. Joseph High School, is pleased to announce a fall high school tournament we've dubbed PANDA -- Planetfall At Notre Dame (Almost)!

Date and time:

Saturday, February 10, 2024. Keep an eye on this post for more details.

Location:

Saint Joseph High School, 453 N. Notre Dame Ave., South Bend, IN 46617.

Question set:

The tournament will use Planetfall, which is the University School of Nashville's latest housewrite. The tournament is similar in difficulty to an NAQT Invitational Series set, but with longer questions.

Cost:

Registration is $80 per first team and $70 per additional team. There is a $5 buzzer discount and a $10 scorekeeper discount. Minimum fee per school is $40.

Registration:

All high school teams are eligible. Email Notre Dame Quizbowl at [email protected] to register. When registering, please let us know how many teams, buzzers, and scorekeepers you expect to bring. Teams must consist of players from the same school, and players may not transfer between teams during the tournament.

Field size:

We expect to cap the field at 18 teams.

Tournament format:

We’ll be using untimed rounds consisting of two 10-tossup halves with three-part bonuses. There will be powers for 15 points, and incorrect answers before the end of a tossup will incur a 5-point penalty (a “neg”). There will be no bouncebacks on bonuses.

Chaperone policy and Code of Conduct:

Participating schools will be expected to have at least one coach or other designated adult (such as the parent of a team member) who is present for the duration of the tournament and actively takes responsibility for the conduct of the school’s players. One coach may suffice for multiple teams from the same school.

All participants in the tournament are expected to comply with the Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence’s code of conduct.

A huge thank-you to all the teams who attended PANDA -- Planetfall at Notre Dame (Almost) -- this weekend!

Our tournament champion was Carmel A, who went 9-0 in our full round-robin, clearing the field and winning the tournament outright. John Adams A and Grand Ledge (the latter of whom played Carmel A to within five points in the last round of the day, nearly forcing a one-game final) both finished 7-2 in joint 2nd place.

Full results have been posted to HSQB at this link.

All three of our top finishers (Carmel A, John Adams A, and Grand Ledge) have already qualified for the 2024 PACE National Scholastic Championship through their performance at prior events. That event will be held June 8-9 at the Hyatt Regency Reston in the suburbs of Washington, DC. Information on this national championship event can be found at http://www.pace-nsc.org.

On behalf of myself and Stephen Heritage, the president of the Quizbowl Club of Notre Dame, whose leadership made PANDA possible, we want to offer our deepest gratitude to everyone who helped us pull this tournament off. A particular word of thanks goes to Ben Dillon, coach at St. Joseph High School, for generously offering St. Joseph's facilities for this weekend's event and for all of his assistance, alongside Notre Dame's own Gavin Dooley, with maintaining live statistics.

I want to also especially highlight Frederick Rudolph. His contributions to Planetfall (alongside, inter alia, those of his former teammates and coaches at the University School of Nashville) brought that set and this tournament to fruition, and it was a real privilege to have him read this tournament into which he has invested such a significant quantity of (exceptionally fruitful) effort.

No quizbowl tournament can happen without a reliable contingent of moderators and scorekeepers. A special word of thanks goes to Tomás Aguilar-Fraga, St. Joseph High School alumnus and current student at Claremont Colleges, for returning to his alma mater to help out at our tournament as a moderator and scorekeeper. From Notre Dame, in addition to those already mentioned, thank you to Kennedy Gallaher, Ben Koberlein, Max Kolda, Peter Mikulski, Tom Pampalone (alumnus), and Ren Steneman, whose competent moderating and scorekeeping meant that we were able to finish this tournament on time.

Notre Dame looks forward to hosting more tournaments in the future and would love to hear any and all suggestions on how we can improve upon today's experience. To all the teams that competed yesterday, much success with the rest of your seasons!

As a final note, we're currently working on cat-stats and will update once we're finished.

With deepest gratitude,
