how to pull in people toward quizbowl

Post by Metacarpal »

I currently have two or three players only one of which is going to Nationals (myself.) I was wondering how to be able to convince people to
a. Join quizbowl
b. Be invested in quizbowl (that is, make quizbowl more fun for them)
c. Somehow convince their parents to let them go to Nationals (the worst part of the task)

All advice would be appreciated. Thank you so much!

Not so sure how to answer your third question. However, I can answer the first two.

a.)You could consider hosting an intramural or practice game and invite other members of your school.
b.)To make practices more fun, try using alternate forms of playing quiz bowl. Here are a few. https://www.qbwiki.com/wiki/Fun_practice_formats

My primary problem is actually trying to pull people in to do exactly the school-wide game - I also did check out the page about alternate game formats earlier, the problem being that with four players on the team and and three of them being hyperspecialists it would not help insanely much - I very much thank you for the response though

Hi! Super delayed response here. Quiz bowl is a pretty niche activity, so finding the right crowd can be tough. I'd recommend advertising to other similar academically-inclined organizations at your school, like honor societies or the Model UN team. Collaborating with other groups--for instance, partnering with another club to host a trivia night--can also help get the word out. Offering varying levels of commitment can also convince people to try it out. When possible, do your best to encourage a diverse pool of attendees... especially gender-wise. I remember in high school it was always disheartening to attend tournaments where I could count the number of girls on one hand. Make sure those players feel respected, wanted, and heard. Best of luck with your club!
