Re: Math Monstrosity - General Discussion

A preliminary announcement is currently in the collegiate announcements forum, modulo debate about pricing structure and distribution.

Re: Mons Mathstrosity II: Even Primes Redux [Announcement]

The third topology question will be getting split between algebra and analysis! This means the distribution is now 3.5 Algebra, 3.5 Analysis and 2 Topology.

Re: Mons Mathstrosity II: Even Primes Redux [Announcement]

A few comments and questions about the distribution. Questions: Is statistics part of applied math? How broad is "other"? Might it include trash? philosophy? Will packets intentionally include questions of significantly varying difficulty? In particular, should packet writers attempt to include var...

Re: Mons Mathstrosity II: Even Primes Redux [Announcement]

The description of the distribution laid out a fairly strong editorial vision, which is perfect for a side event with a small (1, 2) writing team. An event like this that tries to write multiple rounds, each one of which contains far more questions on the topic than most entire tournaments, is nece...

Mons Mathstrosity II: Even Primes Redux [Announcement]

I’m pleased to announce the sequel to Math Monstrosity: Mons Mathstrosity II - Even Primes Redux, a tossups-only math side event. The set will be edited by myself, Matt Mitchell and Harrison Brown. If you are interested in editing for this tournament, please get in touch with me through PM or email ...

Re: Bonus Leadins

I realize now my attempt at pithiness has led to me taking an unnecessarily extreme stance on jokes in the lead in. The occasional, non-forced joke can, in itself, contribute to variety in writing (and there's probably an argument to be made that having some sort of leadin is more helpful than just ...

Re: Bonus Leadins

Here's a helpful method to decide when to put a joke in the lead-in of your bonus:

Step 1: Do you think you should put a joke in this lead-in?

Step 2: Put something interesting and informative there instead.

Also please no more of the "You are an X who wants to Y" lead-ins.

Re: New Mobile App -- Tycho: Play Quizbowl and Science Bowl

Will we see the ability to mix difficulty levels at some point? I like to practice on open and college questions simultaneously so that I can learn things but also not feel godawful at the game.

I'd be interested, time and cost permitting.

Edit: If time permits but cost doesn't I'd also be open to reading instead :P

Algebra has now been killed to make way for more questions whose answer line involves integrals.

Re: Math Monstrosity - General Discussion

I will soon be sending gathering everyone who's expressed interest in editing for this in a group chat (probably on facebook, but if anyone has a preference or ideas I'm open to suggestions), an announcement will follow a couple days after that. We'll have optional packet submission, so you have tha...

Re: Math Monstrosity - General Discussion

The packet submission idea seems pretty popular, so I definitely think I'll do a WAO style optional packet submission. Just curious, is an announcement for this going to go up soon? If you're doing packet-sub it would probably make sense to get it up as early as possible. Also, do you think you'll ...

Re: Math Monstrosity - General Discussion

Is this happening again? I was discussing a potential sequel with Conor at Fall this past weekend. I'm probably going to try my hand at writing it, though work on it probably won't start until I'm done applying to grad school. Also consider this post an open call for writers, I'll need all the help...

Re: Math Monstrosity - General Discussion

2. This is just a question about college quiz bowl (This stems from me not knowing about the college math canon): Is group theory given a lot more emphasis than other parts of algebra? There seemed to be many more questions related to groups than rings, fields, etc. As someone who has taken algebra...

Re: Math Monstrosity - General Discussion

Jake pretty much hit the nail on the head. I do think that a lot of the issues in the tournament with transparency, consistency and difficulty simply resulted from there being only one writer. I had a lot of fun playing the set and negging myself to high hell (well, I had fun when I deserved to be n...
