Re: BUMPY iii - A Visual Film Tournament

I staffed a mirror of this today and wanted to add a strong endorsement. This was an excellent tournament. The answerlines were chosen well -- a few surprises and always interesting. The clues were well ordered to reward deeper engagement. I noticed players getting questions for different, interesti...

Re: ART NOUVEAU Sample Pack

So this tournament never materialized, but I've posted two packets (21 tossups each, super/power marked), compiled from the writing I did before I gave up on the project, here: https://hsquizbowl.org/db/questionsets/2489/ "1" is the sample pack (above in this thread) with minor edits and o...

Re: 2019 Canadian Player Poll

2. Rein Otsason (212, Highest #2, Lowest #5, Median #2) 3. Aayush Rajasekaran (206, Highest #2, Lowest #5, Median #3) Sigh... I fear it may look like I have some vendetta against Rein, but conscience compels me, etc. etc. Also, the McGill chat challenged me to produce a compelling argument for my (...

Oh, I see... I use these interchangeably. Relatedly, the tournament will employ Canadian spelling (on my tossups, at least), but will not have a "Canadian content" allotment in the distribution.

Is this like, a philosophical question? The tournament will stand in the same relation to its packets as other tournaments do...

ART NOUVEAU Sample Pack

Hi everyone, I'm attaching a "Sample Pack" (read twice in the Discord recently) for ART NOUVEAU, an upcoming visual arts tournament by me and Will Alston. I'll formally announce ART NOUVEAU once it's 50% written, hopefully in early July. This pack is a good example of what to expect from A...

Re: 2019 Canadian Player Poll

Here's my top five (I'll update this post with 6-25 later, probably at intervals): 1. Derek So Derek got broader this year, filling in gaps like Religion and some Social Science on McGill A. As a result, our PPBs were very high, especially at Regs difficulty. McGill struggled with tossups this year,...

Re: ACF Nationals 2019 discussion: Question Content

First, there was a pattern in several tossups of dropping (very good, but hence very recognizable) descriptions of giveaway-level material around the middle third, which made these tossups tough to buzz on (because it feels just a bit too early for such material). The following is not an exhaustive...

Re: ACF Nationals 2019 discussion: Question Content

I loved this set! It was easily my favourite hard set I've ever played, and maybe my favourite set ever. I thought it was interesting, challenging in the right ways, highly polished, etc. I particularly liked that easy parts were easy but not too easy, as others have mentioned. Also, visual arts was...

Re: Preseason poll 2018–19

The McGill quiz bowl team has unanimously decided that we will no longer go by the name "Redmen." "Redmen" is the current name of the McGill men's sports teams -- the women's teams are called "Martlets" -- but there is a campaign presently in progress to drop this name....

Who Would Win In A Fight?

Forgive me if this is "off-topic." The purpose of this post is to instigate discussion on the question of who would win in a fight between collegiate quiz bowl teams, current and historical. (I'm envisioning a one-team-vs.-one-team situation, in a tournament format, by the way, not an all-...

Re: Canadian Player Poll 2018

Player Ballot Initially I had comments on everyone but they were mostly just filler so I condensed the few meaningful things I had into the following few sentences. I sometimes forget how good Derek is, but then I remember again. Aayush is a very good NAQT player; he's better than Rein at NAQT, and...
