Re: Share Our Wealth: TRIUMVIRATE (Web Serials Packet)
The reading of TRIUMVIRATE has concluded. Unfortunately, I left my scoresheets at home, so I will not be able to provide complete stats. From what I can remember, Finn Bender took the Mother of Learning title as well as the overall title. However, Sophie Lai powered enough Worm questions to not only...

Share Our Wealth: TRIUMVIRATE (Web Serials Packet)
It's time for yet another edition of Share Our Wealth . And if you thought that the topics of the previous editions just weren't niche enough, you're in luck. Want to go back to 2013 and relive Gold Morning all over again? How about one of Erin Solstice's [Immortal Moments]? Or maybe you just want t...

The second edition of Share Our Wealth was played today. Congratulations to Jakob Myers for winning the Important Videos packet AND the 7O3X packet while riding on a train with terrible Internet. He really did to us. But the real winner was probably the organic chemistry questions... and charity! To...

The second edition of Share Our Wealth is here! ICYMI, the first edition of SOW was a pop music event that raised over $1000 for charity ! I've assembled a set of three packets that are probably only familiar to someone who has spent a little too much time on the Internet. If you are interested, joi...

Thanks to everyone who participated! We ended up with 19 total participants, plus a few extra donations and a few playtesters. Overall, $861.37 was raised for charity by players and $95.30 was raised by non-players (excluding me), bringing the amount raised to $956.67. I’ll throw in my own donation ...

Announcing Share Our Wealth
Hi, it’s been a while since I’ve posted anything here. I’ve been working on this sorta ambitious project called Share Our Wealth. There are two ideas that set this project into motion. The first one is the fact that I have a lot of half-baked (and fully-baked?) niche packets sitting around collectin...

Re: Illinois 18-19
Speaking from my area of Illinois, Hinsdale Central and Glenbard West are both gaining strength and York has gotten a recent influx of strong players from Quest. Glenbard North also has a player who is very good at history. I would definitely look at West Suburban Conference and the surrounding area...

I'm confused as to why Adlai Stevenson didn't at least get an honorable mention in the rankings. At IHSSBCA Kickoff http://www.hsquizbowl.org/db/tournaments/4079/stats/upper_div_prelims Stevenson played with their approximate 2017-18 roster and got over 24 PPB on an IS-set, which should put them in...

Re: Preseason Poll, 2017-18... w/ Results!
I thought removing outliers did a pretty good job at curbing the bias that we saw in last year's preseason poll. Another possible change that might be beneficial is eliminating any "0" votes for a team that crosses a certain vote threshold (say, 100 votes), as it may be that the voter in q...

Re: Preseason Predictions
The thing about TJ and other underranked teams is that their performance, especially at national tournaments, is highly variable. Teams like this tend to rely on tossup conversion instead of bonuses to win games, and while that certainly does produce results, it's also more susceptible to change (i...

I would probably also bump Stevenson into the upper category as the team has a lot of talent right now in addition to Govind. Olivia Lamberti is returning after a year of not playing, meaning Stevenson (re)gains a very good lit player. Yes- that was partly what I was referring to. It's also worth n...

Re: Preseason Predictions
I think Northview and Detroit Country Day deserve a mention as other top 30-ish teams that didn't lose their top scorer. Northview in particular is a team of all sophomores that should be much better this season. I would probably also bump Stevenson into the upper category as the team has a lot of t...

I'm not sure enough about anything to post numerical rankings, but I'd expect the best teams in Illinois this year to be (in no particular order) IMSA, Stevenson, Fremd, OPRF, and Barrington. This is my attempt at creating "Illinois Power Rankings" for the '17-'18 season. Obviously this is extremely subjective, so I encourage other people to come up with their own rankings. I'm not going to rank my own team (OPRF) because I don't feel like ranking myself but I will try to rank ...

Re: Illinois '16-'17
Yes. No Illinois team will win it, but Naperville North will finish ahead of both Stevenson and Barrington, instigating much debate regarding whether the set was hard enough to differentiate the top teams (completely ignoring that Naperville North has been that good, too, all along). Can we just ta...

Re: IHSA 2017
Unrelatedly, is there a reason that IHSA doesn't keep a public record of individual stats or PPB for their matches? It seems odd, seeing as the unreleased conference stats are supposed to be used as justification for sectional seedings. Even disregarding that, it would be convenient to be able to se...

Re: Midseason Poll
I'm pretty late to this party, but I think the Illinois poll had a fairly high success rate at curbing regional bias. Our idea was to have each team in the rankings get equal representation. Each school submitted a ballot collectively and those ballots were fed through an alternative vote calculator...
