Re: Alabama 08-09
I hope this is a good place to post this, and I hope people from the 'ham frequent this board. I'm a Classics and Music major at Samford who did quiz bowl all through HS (and middle school) in Alabama (MS and Grissom, my freshman year) and North Carolina. Samford doesn't have a team, and I don't hav...

I think it's ridiculous and a waste of time to push a child into seriously preparing for quiz bowl at such a young age, but I think any good parent should try to help their child be as well-read as possible for their age. My parents always provided plenty of books and trips to the libary and museums...

What is it with all the girls in N.C.? Katie and Nancy may end up duking it out for tops in the state, you've got at least one other, and I have two girls on my A team. My captain AND co-captain for this coming year are both girls. Judging from the teams I saw at PACE, this is definitely an anomaly...

Deferring in general should be allowed as it can hurt teams that are composed of specialists. How can deferring hurt teams with specialists? Wouldn't it help, since the specialist gets deferred to? This is usually why you get deferred to, I thought, because you have specific knowledge that might he...

This is the method we've used for the last two years, and it's worked pretty well: We get faculty recommendations for highly intelligent, motivated, quick-thinking students, and we send letters to those kids inviting them to an interest meeting. Other kids may attend the meeting as well but we spec...

Well, actually, the empty NC table cannot be advanced to the semifinals since it would have been eliminated. But it's nice to think that we did. :) There was going to be 14 spots, so one room would have had 4 teams rather than 5. Did I miss something? How come NC had a spot? I thought we never regi...

I went to the SEMO camp last year, and it was great. You definitely should come. Any of the majors are good--take what you need or are interested in taking. I was the only one from my school who went, but if you have more people going, split up into different majors! I took Social Studies I (U.S. Hi...

I'm glad this is getting such an enthusiastic response. I talked to Mr. Davis a little bit today about this, and the weekends we think would be best are the first two in May. Everyone so far has given good advice. Keep practicing, and concentrate on those questions at practice. Learn tricks and memorize tables. girls and quizbowl
I go to an all-girls' school now, but I have also had the experience of being the only girl on the team in the past. I can remember one time my freshman year at Grissom when the captain made me run out of practice crying, but overall I liked it. I still have male friends from middle school and fresh...

There actually were many more girls than I expected (I went to SEMO ACE this last summer). I suppose there were fewer females than males, but I don't think it was all that big of a deal. Although, considering that I go to an all-girls boarding school, I wouldn't have minded being the only girl, if t...
