Re: 2018-19 Groger Ranks Awards

Posting from China, grammar will be bad。 Some thoughts: Avinash Iyer is an amazing history player and generalist: rank him in history and sophomore. Steven is a top sci player/generalist, Michael is the best music player in the US, Darren is a top lit player, Cole is amazing at history, and DON'T for...

Re: MSNCT predictions

As far as Arin possibly flaming out on a bad packet, just remember last year's champ played solo, though he was an 8th grader Indeed, but he was an 8th grader playing a MS set, as opposed to a 6th grader playing an IS set. Arin is a lovely kid and an amazing player, but there's a solid chance that ...

Re: MSNCT predictions

I think Arin is an amazing player, but a team based on one player's performance can go downhill swiftly in the case of even one bad packet. I think Hunter A, who has several incredible players (specialists?), has a better chance of winning on an IS set, as 2/4 of their A team was on the team that wo...

GFA is not going to HSNCT or PACE :( . We are, however, headed to SSNCT soon. In terms of personal news, I will be heading for Phillips Academy in Andover, MA next year, where I will be playing.

Re: Okemos Spring Invitational, April 20th 2019

Also, I'm just wondering how you only had 5 negs despite having 44 powers on a hard set. If you had double (!) the powers of the individual that won the tournament, wouldn't you be playing more aggressively? A 9/6/0 round on a set like RMBAT seems strange considering that if you were aggressive enou...

Re: NY/NJ/CT/PA/DE Discussion '18-19

In fact, they have not played a single NY team all year. I'm confused by your reasoning here. They're much more a part of the MA circuit then they are a part of ours. They should not be ranked on this poll. They played against both Troy and Ithaca at MIT Fall. You're right that they are more part o...

Re: NAQT vs Housewrite

Such teams are (or were) referred to as NAQTeams, which is apparently generally used as a derogatory term with the implication being that such teams cannot succeed on different sets. For example, I've seen Hunter be accused of being an NAQTeam on multiple occasions, although this is probably largel...

Barrington HS, being in Rhode Island, is also outside the region of the poll. However, they exclusively play tournaments in the NY region. As such, I decided to make an exception for them. My decision in this matter is final. Wait, what? Barrington has played two tournaments and registered for two ...

Probably in a long while (I'd suggest late December/early January, when the first wave of tournaments has largely ended and the second wave beginning in late January has yet to start) I think that we've pretty much arrived at that point, as December seems very quiet in terms of Northeast tournament...

Re: Staying Alert/Focused after Lunch

This sort of makes me wonder: what are you and your teammates eating/drinking for lunch? Generally we've had pizza... Maybe we just need to change our lunch choice? Also: if you are playing well before the break, chances are decent that you are facing relatively stronger opponents after the break t...

I think if anything, Columbia Fall preliminaries showed how strong Hunter A in the coming years will be. Rachel Yang is a really good lit player who puts up some really clutch buzzes, Pedro Orduz and Cerulean Ozarow (who wasn't at Columbia but is always really good) are incredible history players wh...

I agree with you that High Tech was incredible, though to be honest I believe that the top 10 teams in the circuit are as follows: 1. Hunter A and Ithaca A (tie) It really depends on the set here. If it's NAQT, all four of Hunter's A team seems ready to go in for the kill over any northeast team. Ho...

After Columbia Fall, I have the following to say: Having played the top bracket, there were several top national contenders there. High Tech A was excellent, with really nice buzzes. Deepak went on a run with around 3 firstlines in a row. Ithaca was a juggernaut, and I don't think I've seen a more t...

Indeed. Hunter looks poised to maintain their dominance over the Northeast. I didn't get a chance to see most of upper bracket  but High Tech B was really good and Wilmington Charter was very strong. Millburn, who I played in upper consolation, was also playing super well.

Re: New England Discussion '18-'19

I think the top 5 teams right now in New England including NY are the following: 1. Hunter From what I've seen from his forum posts, Daniel's talent is only eclipsed by his humility in saying that several teams will surpass his team. Let's face it. Hunter is and has been the best high school team in...

Re: New England Discussion '18-'19

From what I saw today at FAcT, the northeast has some strong teams. Daniel from Barrington was stellar when he played us, and Darien B looks as good if not better than their counterpart. Although they seemed tired when we played them, Darien A remains a local power. Christy and Nick from Boston Lati...

Jumping back to the content of the post, as a former middle school lit player, I think you may be underestimating the amount of lit questions there are in a game. The NAQT MS lit distribution contains roughly 3.9 llt per packet. If you stick with humanities and do all of the lit distribution as well...

Re: NY/NJ/CT/PA/DE Discussion '18-19

From a CT perspective, the teams worth ranking are Darien, Greens Farms, Hotchkiss (all of which are ranked) but Wilton, who has two great players in the Koutsoukos brothers, is missing. On the topic of B teams, Hunter has more than four strong history players from what I've seen, so High Tech B and...

I feel really uncomfortable right now because I just realized that Matt Bruce read a round to us at MSNCT. With what I know now, I wouldn't have wanted my female teammates in that room. I'm shocked that NAQT wasn't able to protect me and my teammates from something that has no place in Quiz Bowl and...

I would like to echo Robert's post. Shiva Oswal played incredibly well and it was a great match between us. He undoubtedly deserved that win, as anyone who watched the final match can attest. Re: IAC announces Middle School all-subject team rankings

In my opinion, powers per game is so viable because it shifts. If you're playing a close game, but proceed to power 8 times, it reflects on both you and your opponent's skill. Teams that consistently power (GFA, BASIS, Midtown) are likely to do better at MSNCT because they are probably going to powe...

I have a system of my own for rankings that's purely on the NAQT MS sets. I look at the 12 teams I have so far and rank therm from 12(best) - 1(worst) on 3 things, which are 1. Powers (in 9 Games, so if they played 7, I divide their powers by 7 and multiply the Powers per Game (which should really b...

Doing Well at MSNCT

Hi everyone! I'm Karsten Rynearson, captain of GFA MS, and I'm wondering about how to improve my team/myself in the months before MSNCT. We're a small program (4 players) that generally puts up 24-25 PPB. To give you some stats, here's our most recent (and only) tournament playing as a team: https:/...
