Re: How to prepare for College Nationals

To echo off of Chandler and Casey's posts a bit, I think the reason there is frustration among strong high school players has less to do with "I'm not good enough" and more to do with "I don't know how to become good enough" if that makes sense. Both of you make valid points about expectations, but ...

Re: How to prepare for College Nationals

It has been brought to my attention this would fit better elsewhere on the forums. If a moderator could please move this to the "collegiate discussion" subthread, that would be much appreciated.

How to prepare for College Nationals

As many of you may remember, a while ago the forums exploded with a huge discussion on the difficulty of college nationals. However, while that discussion fostered many arguments for why national competitions have the difficulty they do, very little was actually spent discussing what actually distin...

Re: The Online Quizbowl in the West

Well if that's the case, great! Let's run some summer discord tournaments with video and see if any issues arise. If not, maybe we can start implementing discord's video feature more often.

Re: The Online Quizbowl in the West

If we're going to have to play regional tournaments online next fall (which, as Alistair pointed out, is looking increasingly likely), I think we should consider zoom as a platform as opposed to discord. Obviously zoom tournaments would be more complicated from a logistical standpoint, but there is ...

Re: Where are you going to college next year? (2020)

In an unexpected twist of events, I intend to go to Bowdoin in the fall and will be quizbowlling there. This aged fantastically. I will be going to Pomona in the fall. Given that I know zero things about the QB situation there, I'd have to say the chances of me playing have gone down. For what it's...

Re: Nationals Alternatives?

Clearly I vastly misjudged the amount of work and money people have put into this. Thanks for opening my eyes to that. I sincerely apologize for my idiotic statements. They were totally uncalled for.

A brief, and now concluded, discussion about saving unused sets

Frankly I think you'd get very, very few sign ups for anything resembling this idea, including from my team. The whole point of nationals is to play against other people in real time. Your suggested format would allow for none of that. Also with regards to national organizations saving their sets fo...

Re: College Nationals and Its Problems

Others in this thread have used EFT as an example of a set that has a good balance between accessible and challenging content, and I would agree with that. The problem is that EFT is the only set that consistently hits that balance. This year alone, LIT and MWT were both also at this difficulty, no...

Re: College Nationals and Its Problems

I think the discussion here wouldn't be as one sided if we had a few more current high school players contributing to the conversation. The transition between high school and college QB right now is absolutely brutal. I don't think there's an issue with that. High level college players deserve a com...

Nationals Alternatives?

Hello all. I think it's safe to say that the string of national competition cancellations in the past two weeks have been devastating to everyone in the Quizbowl community. Obviously, it would be great if we didn't have to deal with the worst pandemic in a century right now and just run everything s...

Re: 2019 HSNCT discussion

Just out of curiosity, when NAQT writes HSNCT questions, what is the target power/ten/neg ratio supposed to look like? If there is an ideal ration, is it more important that there's a level of consistency when it comes to the conversion for each question or is it more a matter of making sure the ent...

Re: Preseason Discussion

The entire Liberty MS squad that went 4th at the 2019 MSNCT all join James Clemens this year. Expect Ethan Xu (History), Yuti Das (Literature), Austen Wyche (FA, USH), and Joshua Wang (Science) to all seamlessly scale up and be a seriously balanced roster. They are definitely Top-25 caliber. I thin...

Southern California 2018 - 2019 Discussion

The 2018-19 season is just around the corner, and as such, we must continue the proud tradition of obsessing about our teams' rankings. We've been used to previous years' superteams like 2017 Westview or 2018 CCA making most tournaments a race for second, but it doesn't look like the 2019 season wil...

Re: Southern California 2017 - 2018 Discussion

It has been a while since anyone last posted a comparison on this page, so I guess I might as well. In a vain attempt to make my updated rankings semi-useful to anybody who might be reading, I've decided to rank teams on NAQT and the limited house-writes so far separately, because it seems like ther...
