Our chief goal is to win our state championship. All other goals are secondary. Our televised game is a joke, but we do practice somewhat for it. Current events is a major focus for that tournament. We practice for Nationals (NAQT) just like we practice all year long. We generally use NAQT question...

I predict that Bleckley County will retain their title of Most Awesome School Name in GA. And the 4- and 5-A schools will wipe the floor with the smaller schools, like always; blah, blah blah. And some ignoramus will leave out either Brookwood, Chattahoochee or Heritage from the High Q pool while le...

My guess would be that this is the main issue. HS players of both genders find other things to do in college, and maybe it's just more noticeable with girls because there are fewer of them to begin with. Most colleges are majority female these days, are they not? Pretty sure he meant there are fewe...

Re: Quizbowler in the New York Times
I like how this article tries to reinforce the notion that qb players are nerdy, cloistered douches filled with random academic knowledge but absolutely no awareness of the outside world. I like how this entire board does that. ICE BURN      He's stronge...

While it doesn't apply, the Russian title has nothing to do with the reason why. As far as I can tell, this book has never been published in English as A Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich , so that's not an acceptable answer. That is the only criterion; what someone suspects the translation of a f...

3-4 West Coast Offense J.P. Morgan Carnegie Negged on both of those, except, like chaska, I said Vanderbilt for Morgan. My college football-loving coach made me feel bad about missing the 3-4, because APPARENTLY I should know about some old Oklahoma or something coach from the sixties. Right. Funer...

The best way I can phrase it is this: how aggressive you are on buzzing in on a question should be inversely proportional to how likely your teammates are to throttle you if you neg on it. If you're fairly well-liked and generate positive points most of the time, make that buzzer sorry it's sitting ...

There was one time when Mission buzzed in with (upon a prompt, thermo)nuclear fission, and the moderator and scorekeeper talked to each other for about 10 minutes and decided it was a neg. The answer was nuclear reactor, but at that point in the tossup there was hardly anything definitely distingui...

It could just be a compulsion to cheat, driven by some sort of inferiority complex or other psychological necessity (like kleptomania, or something). Last year, my team had a senior on it who was what seemed like a compulsive cheater at everything; school, girls, and even quizbowl practice. What he ...

As for the argument that a school's A team is always going to be better than it's B team: 1) That isn't always true. Yeah, it's supposed to be like that, but if a player on B team absolutely rips up one game and A team plays badly, it can happen. But that isn't even the point. The point is 2) You c...

While there are good arguments on both sides of this issue, I think that the true national championship should include only one team per school. My reasoning is that if everyone there is to be competing for a championship, and not place or show, it stands to reason that since a school's A team is ne...

It may be just me, but judging from this discussion it seems that living between the 36th and 40th parallels and east of the Ohio River gives teams there the edge on NAQT format. True, Richard Montgomery has a distinct possibility (and probably the pot odds) of winning, but it seems to me that there...

4. I prefer questions that do not end up with videogame (or other crap) endings so that a player can answer a Shakespeare question because he/she knows some video game character. Let's answer a Shakespeare question because we know some Shakespeare and not because we know the name of a movie dog who...

Beta went pretty well; we beat Parkview in the semis and Warner Robins in the finals. The questions were your standard Beta fare (I don't know if you've heard them before, but if you have, you know what I mean), and no bounce-back bonuses = >.<, but it wasn't so bad all things considered. I saw the ...

Re: Southeast
Why is it that in the southeast we can beat Walton and Dorman, have some cosmic losing force descend upon us for Brookwood, and don't seem to do terribly well nationally??? I mean, we've beaten Dorman several times, and they WIN at nationals. It's because we slipped something in the Heritage kids' ...
