Re: Harris Bunker

Given that Penn Bowl 2021 was Harris' final QB project, we wanted to highlight how much we appreciated his excellent work editing social science and his insightful comments across the set. With his parents' permission, we have donated his editor's fee to bethematch.com in his memory.

2021 Penn Bowl General Discussion

Thanks to everyone who played Penn Bowl 2021! This set would not have been possible without the hard work and patience of our editors and writers, who all stuck with it for nearly two years because of the pandemic. I want to single out Aseem Keyal and Jonathen Settle for special thanks; their active...

Re: Penn Bowl 2020

In light of new university guidance (and the overwhelming unlikelihood of gathering safely in February), we've opted to cancel Penn Bowl 2020. This set will become Penn Bowl 2021, which can be mirrored on a to-be-announced set of dates in October of 2021.

Re: This Time, A Stern Warning

I think it would be nice if people who have done the same would open up as well, although given some of the punitive rhetoric in this thread, I would guess that we need to create a better space for that kind of conversation before people feel comfortable doing so. In the interest of having that kin...

I believe the general response to Eric’s confession, and the discussion of a course of action has been characterized by a great deal of magnanimity, because Eric is a respected, long-tenured member of the game. I strongly doubt the tenor of the discussion would look like this if the person who conf...

This tournament was the most fun I've had playing quizbowl in a long time, probably ever. In the tossup about fire in belief, I buzzed in with “light” after the clue about Brahma and Vishnu’s race to the end of Shiva’s pillar of ‘this substance.’ I was negged, but as far as I can tell the pillar is referred to as a “pillar of light” more often than not—particularly in reference to the or...

When I buzzed on The Augustus II the Strong tossup I said "August the Strong" since his regnal name in Poland was August. It wasn't accepted because it wasn't listed in the answer line. I protested, but we won the match anyway, so it wasn't considered. Shouldn't August be a valid answer? ...

I'm not sure why one needs to change a tossup on Barcelona to Spain - there's plenty of usable history clues on Barcelona. Went through and did some clue look-up for the Barcelona tossup. Obviously this is not an absolute statement of any individual clue’s difficulty, especially since it is very reasonable to say that the Barcelona angle of many of these clues hasn’t been put to good use, but I think it’s pretty clear ...

I generally enjoyed myself playing this set, but I feel obliged to bring up how comically easy the US history was. In the 11 games I played, the US history tossup was powered in 10 of them, and typically because the questions dropped very, very well-known things early on. For instance, the Jimmy Ca...
