Regarding ranking discussions and the like for Alabama for this year: At the end of last year's thread, I listed the teams from our state that I thought would be in the hunt for the title this year, and some reasons why I felt that way. A teammate having his phone go off in the middle of a bonus in an elimination match at the 2004 HSNCT. A bonus that I never heard but would have 30'd, which forced me to go for a power on a Lute Olson question with time running out (I missed). I'd be shocked if Russellville got to state, honestly. I don't necessarily think it's the coaching (Mrs. Daily's replacement is more than willing to work with them), but right now the pipeline is just dry. They'll be starting one senior and two sophomores--they need to get a lot better, and soon to ...

Russellville will have a team. How good they'll be depends on A: How well Nick plays sans the other 3 starters. B: How much Joe improves (he was a solid player, but him getting better would be nice) C: What the younger kids do. I fully expect this group to get to state, but after that, who knows?

Thanks Mr. Rutsky, it was a REALLY close match. The game wasn't decided until the 2nd to last tossup. Given another set of questions, I'm sure the result would have been quiet different. Re: "Slaughtering" in middle school quizbowl
I am assuming that there is no B team(6 or fewer players), or that the B team is the one doing the slaughtering(as is entirely possible). If neither of these are true, then slaughter away. That was the thing...we had 12 players going, and the tourney was needing an extra team, so we split into 3 4-...

Other than having one team cry when we beat them 525-110, it worked out pretty well. Maybe I'm a bitter, cynical sociopath, but making the other team cry sounds pretty awesome to me. Re: "Slaughtering" in middle school quizbowl
Take it with a grain of salt (it's been nine years since I played MS quizbowl), but I really think there has to be some limit on how bad you beat folks. With a caveat: if the tourney determines seeding on points scored. For instance, there were a few tourneys I played that were round-robin. In those...
